Germany has three years to overhaul military: Official - War in Ukraine
Defence spending has risen up the political agenda since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and more recently with the United States pushing NATO members to increase their commitments.
"Everything necessary to be fully prepared to defend the country must be acquired by 2028," Annette Lehnigk-Emden, head of the Federal Office for Military Procurement, told Tagesspiegel newspaper.
Chief of defence General Carsten Breuer recently warned that Russia could be in a position to "launch a large-scale attack against NATO territory" as early as 2029.
He said there was a Russian build-up of ammunition and tanks for a possible attack on NATO's Baltic members.
Lehnigk-Emden stressed that Chancellor Friedrich Merz's new government was enabling the upgrade by allocating hundreds of billions of euros for defence.
She said the priority would be for heavy equipment such as Skyranger anti-aircraft tanks.
Merz has made rearmament a priority of his coalition government to make it "the most powerful conventional army in Europe".
Rearmament had already begun under the previous government of Olaf Scholz after Russia launched its war in Ukraine.
And US President Donald Trump has raised the temperature further this year by pushing NATO members to increase their defence spending to five percent of GDP from the current level of two percent.
Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said on Thursday that 50,000 to 60,000 new soldiers would be needed in the coming years to meet the increased defence needs of NATO.
Last year, the army had more than 180,000 soldiers and set a goal of exceeding 203,000 by 2031.

Basant Ahmed The Pentagon announced on Wednesday that the State Department has approved a potential sale of advanced air defense systems to Egypt for approximately $4.67 billion. The sale includes NASAMS advanced surface-to-air missile systems, a wide range of missiles, radars, and technical support and training equipment. According to a statement from the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the deal includes a comprehensive package of weapons and equipment, most notably the NASAMS air defense system, a medium- to long-range mobile system used to protect airspace from aircraft, cruise missiles, and drones. The deal also includes four AN/MPQ-64F1 Sentinel radars, which are advanced 3D radars for detecting air threats with high accuracy, as well as 100 AMRAAM-ER missiles and 100 AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM missiles, two of the latest radar-guided air-to-air missiles effective against long-range targets. ICC convicts pair over Central Africa war crimes - Africa
The International Criminal Court Thursday convicted a former top Central African Republic football official and a militiaman nicknamed Rambo for multiple war crimes committed during the country's civil war in 2013 and 2014. Ex-sports minister Patrice-Edouard Ngaissona was a senior leader of mainly Christian militias as the country slid into civil war, while Alfred Yekatom, a former MP, commanded them on the ground. The ICC sentenced Yekatom to 15 years behind bars for 20 war crimes and crimes against humanity including murder and torture. Ngaissona received a sentence of 12 years for 28 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Their militia, known as anti-Balaka or "anti-machete", were formed as vigilante self-defence groups after mainly Muslim rebels called the Seleka stormed the capital Bangui and removed then-president Francois Bozize, a Christian. Presiding judge Bertram Schmitt read harrowing details of the violence committed by the militia against suspected Seleka Muslims. Yekatom's men tortured one suspect by cutting off his fingers, toes, and one ear. This man's body was never found. Others were killed and then mutilated. Appearing in court dressed in a light brown suit and waistcoat, white shirt, and dark tie, Yekatom listened impassively as the judge read out the verdict. Dressed in a bright blue jacket, Ngaissona nodded to the judge as his sentence was delivered. The court found Yekatom not guilty of conscripting child soldiers and acquitted Ngaissona of the charge of rape. Both men had pleaded not guilty to all charges. Yekatom was extradited to The Hague in late 2018, after being arrested in the CAR for firing his gun in parliament. Ngaissona was arrested in France in December 2018 and extradited to The Hague. At the time he was head of the CAR football association and a board member of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The Central African Republic is among the poorest nations in the world and has endured a succession of civil wars and authoritarian governments since independence in 1960. Violence has subsided in recent years but fighting occasionally erupts in remote regions between rebels and the national army, which is backed by Russian mercenaries and Rwandan troops. Set up in 2002, the ICC is the world's only independent tribunal capable of prosecuting those accused of the world's worst crimes. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

President El-Sisi condoles Putin over victims of Russia plane crash - Foreign Affairs
President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi condoled with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, over the victims of the tragic plane crash in eastern Russia. 'I extend, in my name and on behalf of the Egyptian people, my sincerest condolences to my friend President Vladimir Putin and the Russian people for the victims of the passenger plane crash in eastern Russia today,' said El-Sisi in a post on his official Facebook page. The Egyptian president also expressed his heartfelt sympathy and profound solidarity with the victims' families during this difficult time. Earlier on Thursday, a Russian Antonov An-24 passenger aircraft en route from Blagoveshchensk, a city in Russia, to Tynda, a town 568 kilometres northwest of Blagoveshchensk, crashed in the country's far eastern Amur region, with all 49 people on board feared dead, according to Reuters. Preliminary data provided by Amur's governor, Vasily Orlov, stated that the plane was carrying 43 passengers, including five children, along with six crew members.
