Excelsior dominate Athletic Marist despite messy start in heavy rain

Winter was in full swing in North Otago on Saturday as wet and windy conditions welcomed all six teams back after they had last weekend off.
Part two of the Battle of the Carpark featured Excelsior beating Athletic Marist 27-5.
The opening 20 minutes were messy from both sides as heavy rain made handling the ball tough.
Once it started to clear up, Blues were able to string some phases together in Athletic's territory.
Quick recycled ball allowed Tasilisili Ika to crash over in the corner.
Excelsior were hot on attack a few minutes later when Josh Phipps calmly dropped back in to the pocket and slotted a drop goal to give his side a double-digit lead.
They continued to dominate possession and territory but could not crack the strong Athies defence.
However, Phipps was able to keep adding points off the tee as he nailed four penalty kicks at goal to give Blues a 22-0 lead with 15 minutes to play.
A sliver of hope was offered to Athies when a messy exit from Blues was hacked through by Athies, who won a penalty, giving them a great attacking opportunity.
They tapped it quickly and their forwards went to work.
Alifereti Matirewa scored to keep their hopes alive.
However, Alfie Coop did not get the chance to kick the conversion as the referee ruled he had taken a step forward, allowing Blues to rush up and knock it off the tee before he got there.
It did not matter in the end as hooker Hozayah Taylor scored off the back of a driving maul to clinch the win for Excelsior.
It was a gutsy effort from Blues in the wet, and they were led by Phipps and halfback Tyron Davies.
The pair drove their team around the park and made good decisions all day.
Fullback Liam Direen has also quietly strung together an impressive season in the back three.
Valley have now won six in a row and find themselves on top of the table after beating Old Boys 22-19.
It was not all smooth sailing as they trailed 19-7 at halftime.
They really kicked into gear in the second 40, scoring three unanswered tries and keeping Old Boys scoreless.
Maheno beat Kurow 27-17 for their first win of the year.
It has been a tough season for the green machine, but they have continued to front up and finally got the rewards on Saturday.

Surprises in Robertson's All Blacks team to face France in first Test

Scott Robertson's first match-day squad of the year has come with several surprises, the biggest of which is lock Tupou Vaa'i starting at blindside flanker and Fabian Holland making his debut at lock. Christian Lio-Willie, initially included in the squad as injury cover after helping the Crusaders to the Super Rugby Pacific title, will start at No.8 in his Test debut. Injuries and recent heavy workloads have clearly played a part in Robertson's thinking for the Test against France in Dunedin on Saturday night, with tighthead prop Tyrel Lomax unavailable and no sign of Blues lock Patrick Tuipulotu. Vaa'i has played flanker in a Test before – during the 2023 World Cup – but Robertson's decision to go with him there rather than Samipeni Finau, who is on the bench, is an intriguing one. Elsewhere, Rieko Ioane is on the left wing with Billy Proctor to start at centre, and Sevu Reece on the right. ADVERTISEMENT As predicted, Beauden Barrett will start at first-five, with Damian McKenzie on the bench. Cam Roigard gets the nod as starting halfback over Cortez Ratima, with Jordie Barrett straight back at second-five after his sabbatical in Ireland. Fabian Holland (Source: Photosport) Two others, Ollie Norris and loose forward Du'Plessis Kirifi are in line to make their Test debuts off the bench. Robertson said the uncapped players have worked hard to get to this point and are ready to step into the test arena. "This is a huge moment for these men and their families, we are all thrilled for them. For Fabian and Christian, it will be special to debut in front of a Dunedin home crowd and I am sure Fabian's Highlanders supporters and Christian's Otago fans will be out in full force. 'Ollie and Du'Plessis have both shown their class in Super Rugby this year and we know they are ready.' Ethan de Groot, Codie Taylor and Fletcher Newell make up the starting front row, with recalled All Blacks hooker Samisoni Taukei'aho and 7-test prop Pasilio Tosi in the reserves. ADVERTISEMENT Vice-captain Ardie Savea will wear the No.7 jersey. 'Facing France is always special - they bring intensity, flair, and physicality. As a group we have had a fantastic ten days together, preparing for the three-test series ahead of us. "We are ready for the challenge and what better place to kick it off than under the roof in Dunedin, in front of a packed home crowd," Robertson said. * More to come All Blacks match-day 23 (Test caps in brackets; * denotes debutant) ADVERTISEMENT 1. Old Boys stay alive, Excelsior into final

The Citizens Shield. Photo: Rugby In North Otago Never count out Old Boys. Despite being a step behind the top three teams in the competition all season, they are now just one win away from a spot in the Citizens Shield final after an impressive 36-24 win over Athletic Marist in the 3v4 quarterfinal on Saturday. The match started in an exciting back-and-forth manner as Athies opened the scoring before Old Boys ran in two of their own to go up 14-5. Athies then really kicked into gear. A line break from Osea Qamasea got them into the 22m, where they won a penalty. It was taken quickly and Posiano Kamoto crashed over. Captain Savenaca Rabaka crossed for a a try minutes later to put them in front. Blake James added a penalty to extend the lead to six. However, momentum swung back in Old Boys' favour as halfback Tini Feke completed a first-half hat-trick. His third try just before halftime coupled with Alex Wilson's tough conversion had Old Boys leading by one at the break. The second half was an old-fashioned arm wrestle with neither side being able to break through the other's defence. Wilson kicked three penalties for Old Boys and Qamasea kicked one for Athies to make it a seven-point game with only a few minutes to play. Off an Athies 22m dropout, Old Boys No 8 Junior Fakatoufifita ran through a wide open gap before he was brought down inside the 22m. Old Boys quickly recycled the ball and spun it wide to winger Hopoate Finau, who stepped inside one defender and burst through another to score and seal the win. It was a massive defensive effort from Old Boys to keep a dangerous Athies side try-less in the second half. Their entire forward back fronted up physically and worked incredibly hard on both attack and defence. Defending champions Excelsior booked their spot in the final following their 31-15 win over Valley in the 1v2 quarterfinal. Liam Direen scored two tries for Excelsior, while Josh Phipps added 16 points. Valley front-rower Jake Greenslade scored two tries for the beaten team. It is not over for Valley, however, as they earned a life by being top qualifier and will play Old Boys on Saturday in a do-or-die clash.

Rivalry set for latest chapter

Excelsior back Matia Qiolevu. PHOTO: ODT FILES And so they meet again. Excelsior v Valley has become arguably the biggest rivalry in Citizens Shield rugby, and another chapter will play out tomorrow. The clubs meet in the 1v2 quarterfinal, with the winners progressing straight to the final and the losers getting a life. It is a repeat of both the 2023 (Valley won 26-23) and 2024 (Excelsior won 20-19) Citizens Shield finals, and the sides split their regular-season clashes this year, Blues winning 28-16 in the first round and Valley triumphing 20-13 in the second. "Last year, down to the wire in the final, and the year before, down to the wire in the final," Excelsior coach Jason Forrest said. "Even this year, we're 1-1 again, so it's back to the drawing board. "We know each other well. And we know exactly how difficult it's going to be for us to get the result we're after this weekend." Excelsior had qualified second but been a mixed bag this season, Forrest felt. "Apart from a couple of really good performances, we probably haven't played the sort of rugby we would like to be playing at times this year. "We've been inconsistent at times, but in saying that, we've got a lot of motivation to go back to back and we're staying pretty positive around where we're heading." Blues winger Seva Druma leads the competition with 11 tries, and experienced first five Josh Phipps has the most points (136). Oli Knopp — who has made the rare move from fullback to No 8 — has been a revelation in recent weeks, veteran Tom Shields has shored up the front row, and youngster Liam Direen has impressed at fullback. Forrest said he had huge respect for a Valley team buoyant after eight straight wins. Valley have their relentless veteran core of Cameron Rowland, Jake Greenslade, Jake Matthews and Matt Vocea, and have also got some oomph from visiting Japanese players Gaku Shmizu and Kippei Taninaka. "They're just a well-drilled, disciplined, well-coached side that do everything well," Forrest said. "They're hard to break down, and they play for each other, and they're fit. "You've got to be patient against them and hopefully a couple of things go your way." Athletic Marist and Old Boys clash in the sudden-death game.
