Missing Australian fisherman dragged overboard by shark, police say

Yahoo25-02-2025
Police in Australia say a fisherman who fell overboard during a fishing competition on Sunday was dragged by a shark that was entangled in fishing gear.
The search for Paul Barning, a figure in the New South Wales Game Fishing Association, continued Monday after authorities were alerted around 1 p.m. Sunday that the 58-year-old had fallen from his boat, Dark Horse, about 34 miles off the coast of Newcastle near Port Stephens, authorities said.
Marine Area Command Commander Superintendent Joe McNulty told local news outlets on Monday that investigators believe the shark was "quite large" compared to Barning's 6.8-meter long vessel.
"During that process of bringing the shark alongside, he's become tangled in the fishing line, and the shark has taken off, and that fishing line was pulled taut and maybe contributed to him going over the side of the vessel. There's no evidence to say that shark has attacked the person in the water," McNulty said at a news conference. He added that Barning wasn't wearing a life jacket.
Barning, the secretary and past president of the Port Hacking game fishing club, was a "highly experienced game fisherman." He was participating in the NSWGFA Interclub State Championships at the time of the incident, the game fishing organization said in a statement posted to social media.
"This devastating accident highlights the risks involved in doing what we all love, game fishing," NSWGFA president Steve Lamond said in the statement. "Please look out for each other and stay safe."
Game fishing is a sport in which competitors catch, tag and release game fish including marlins, tunas and sharks. Points depend on the species of the game fish and their size.
Among the shark species eligible for points are Blue, Smooth Hammerhead, Mako, Porbeagle, Thresher, Tiger, Great White and Whaler sharks, according to the NSWGFA rulebook. The shark that Barning caught was believed to be a Mako, police said, which can reach up to 13 feet long, according to the NOAA Fisheries.
Competitors are also awarded prizes for catching the heaviest shark and catching the most sharks.

World's first 150mph car returns to beach where it broke record

In 1925, on a beach in south-west Wales, the automotive world was changed forever. A car dealer named Malcolm Campbell and his 350-horsepower Sunbeam car named Blue Bird, hoped to use the seven miles of Pendine Sands in Carmarthenshire to break the 150mph (241km/h) barrier in a car for the first time. He had already set - and lost - the world land-speed record several times before, but in front of the world's media, he looked to smash through a target which nobody was sure was possible. But it was. Over two runs on 21 July 1925, he recorded an average speed of 150.766mph, catapulting him to international stardom. Now, 100 years later, Blue Bird will be back at Pendine to mark the historic achievement. It will be wheeled on to the beach for a ceremonial start-up in front of Sir Malcolm's grandson, Don Wales. Mr Wales is just one part of Sir Malcolm's record breaking lineage. Donald Campbell, Sir Malcolm's son, was the only man to hold both the land and water-speed records at the same time, before he was killed at Coniston Water in the Lake District in 1967 in another record attempt. His daughter Gina broke the women's world water speed record. While Mr Wales, Donald Campbell's nephew, has previously held UK and world records for the fastest electric car, steam-powered car and quickest lawnmower on Earth. Speed record attempt photo sold Pendine racer's building honour Blue Bird back to sands of triumph Mr Wales said: "There's just something in our genes, I think it was Grandad's buccaneering Scottish ancestors. "We're all family people, but when the red mist of racing descends, nothing matters more than burying our right foot and seeing how fast our vehicles, talent and bravery can take us." Mr Wales said he thought his grandfather was unprepared for the fame the feat would bring him. "He went from an aside on the back pages to the main headline in every paper, he had congratulations from the King, and suddenly everyone wanted to be associated with him." Pendine was the crucible of land speed records in the 1920s, with enough space for cars to accelerate to - and more importantly brake from - speeds which had become impossible to achieve on racetracks like Brooklands. Between 1924 and 1927 Sir Malcolm and his friend and rival, Wrexham engineer John Godfrey Parry Thomas tussled for top spot. Between them they raised the record from 140mph (225km/h) to 176mph (283km/h), before Parry Thomas was killed in his self-build car Babs. "Grandad and Parry Thomas had very different approaches to the record," Mr Wales said. "Blue Bird was a sleek track-racing car which had been adapted for land-speed, while Babs was purpose-built for record attempts, with a single-minded focus on the sheer power which was needed to carry it over a mile as quickly as possible. "The contrast in styles was what kept the public fascinated." Mr Wales drove Blue Bird on the anniversary 10 years ago, calling it "terrifying and wonderful in equal measure". But despite its power, Sir Malcolm knew the Blue Bird had "maxed out" and when 200mph was breached at the 23-mile Daytona Beach in Florida by Henry Segrave. Partly out of respect for Parry Jones - and because of the extra space at Daytona compared with Pendine - Sir Malcolm drove a later iteration of Blue Bird through the 300mph (483km/h) barrier for the first time. Today, the original Blue Bird is cared for at the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu in Hampshire, though the car has not always had it as good. It was rescued from a barn in the 1950s, before spending more than 30 years stationary at Beaulieu before a disastrous attempt to start it again in 1993. Its chief engineer at Beaulieu Ian Stanfield said: "It never should have happened, you never turn over a car which has been idle for 30-plus years, but the pressure was on to get her running. "The inevitable happened: the engine seized, she sprung a con rod, and smashed the crank case as well as several valves and pistons." It took about 10 years to rebuild the engine, with the original Sunbeam factory in Wolverhampton bombed in World War Two, with "next-to-no budget" and begging and borrowing parts where they could. He worries if the expertise to keep Blue Bird running for another century exists. "I've been working here for 47 years, and some of my colleagues even longer. We need to find the money and the time to train up the next generation to work on the vehicles which we've been so privileged to care for, and pass on the baton." However, Mr Wales is more confident about the future of the land-speed record. "A hundred years ago nobody knew if 150mph would be possible. "Today there are two projects looking to exceed 1,000mph. "If there's the public interest and the desire from the industry to push forward again, there's no reason it couldn't happen in our lifetime. "The biggest challenge is finding somewhere long enough to attempt it."

The Athletic's quarterback tier rankings reveal high potential for Notre Dame's CJ Carr

As is naturally the case at Notre Dame, all eyes during the college football season usually fall on whoever is under center in South Bend. The Athletic recently broke down every projected FBS starting quarterback (subscription required), from 1 to 136, into seven tiers. The publication surveyed more than 40 coaches and staffers from across the sport to get their opinions, and the writers relied heavily on that feedback for their list. The rankings are based on a combination of coaches' perspectives, the players' physical abilities, on-field performance to date and a projection of what 2025 could entail for them. These are college-based only and not a projection of how these QBs would fare at the NFL level. Fighting Irish projected starter CJ Carr ranked No. 49 overall and slotted into tier-4, which is comprised of either young, unproven new starters with a lot of potential or veterans who have shown a lot of talent but may have been hurt or had a bad stretch at some point. Obviously Carr falls into the former category. From the story: Carr emerged as the leader in the QB competition coming out of spring practice. He took only four snaps last season and didn't attempt a pass as he recovered from an injury to his throwing elbow suffered during preseason camp. But in the Blue-Gold game, the former Elite 11 QB showed touch and accuracy on downfield throws and a good feel for the offense. He'll make mistakes as a first-time starter. How he handles those, along with the pressure that comes with being QB1 at Notre Dame, will be telling. Carr has yet to attempt a pass at the college level, but head coach Marcus Freeman and his staff have full confidence in the grandson of former Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr, especially with a deep backfield, a good offensive line and an expected higher level of play at the wide receiver position. Notre Dame 2025 Profile: Quarterback Kenny Minchey

Notre Dame 2025 Profile: Quarterback Kenny Minchey originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Notre Dame is going through its first real quarterback battle since 2018, and rising junior Kenny Minchey is part of that competition. Minchey finally gets his shot to win the job, and he has the talent to battle with CJ Carr for the position. Minchey is considered the underdog, but he'll go into fall camp in position to push for the spot. Advertisement IB continues its 2025 player preview profiles with a look at Kenny Minchey. KENNY MINCHEY BIO Hometown/High Schools: Hendersonville, Tenn./Pope John Paul II Height/Weight: 6-2, 204 Class/Eligibility: Junior/Sophomore STATS BREAKDOWN 2024: 4 snaps - 1-1, 4 yards / 2 carries, 12 yards, 1 TD 2023: 13 snaps - 2-2, 12 yards Career: 17 snaps - 3-3, 16 yards / 2 carries, 12 yards, 1 TD Join the Notre Dame Champions Lounge for the latest intel and analysis of the Fighting Irish! 2024 RECAP Minchey went into the spring of 2024 in a battle to earn the backup job behind transfer quarterback Riley Leonard. That role ultimately went to veteran Steve Angeli, which relegated Minchey to third team. Minchey did perform well in the Blue-Gold Game that spring, hitting 12-19 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 40 yards and another touchdown in the spring game. Advertisement The sophomore got into just one game and played just four snaps on the season. Minchey led Notre Dame to a touchdown on that drive. He hit a shovel pass, ran twice for 12 yards and then threw a ball into the end zone that drew a defensive pass interference penalty. 2025 EXPECTATIONS Minchey will battle Carr for the starting job, so before we get into expectations for the season he'll need to prove he can win the job. I broke down the keys to winning the starting job in the quarterback preview, which you can find HERE. While I personally view Carr as the frontrunner in this battle and expected him to start, Minchey is certainly a legit contender for the job. The starting quarterback job is not going to be handed to Carr, he'll need to win it, which means Minchey has a legit opportunity to do the same. Advertisement Minchey is in this battle because he's a talented quarterback, and that's ultimately why he still has a chance to win it. When breaking him down we aren't talking about a "try hard player" who has to make up for a lack of talent with a great attitude. Minchey brings a lot of talent to the position, beginning with a strong right arm. Minchey has shown the last two springs that he's willing and able to get the ball down the field. His post throw to KK Smith in the Blue-Gold Game (that was dropped) was an incredibly impressive throw, and Minchey has a knack for making those types of plays. There isn't a throw on the field that Minchey can't make, and the fact this is true for both him and Carr makes this battle exciting. From a passing standpoint, both quarterbacks offer an upgrade, and for Minchey it's more from a playmaking standpoint. He throws well on the run, has the arm strength to attack down the field on play-action looks and he has a quick release and the ability to thrive from the pocket as well. Minchey is also an impressive athlete that has developed into a playmaker in college. As a high school player he didn't run much, and when Minchey got on the move it was primarily to buy time so he could throw the ball. At Notre Dame he has become much more willing to take off and run, and the coaches have also shown a willingness to call designed runs for him. He scored on a designed run in the 2024 Blue-Gold Game, the 2025 Blue-Gold Game and also in the 66-7 win over Purdue. That playmaking ability and athleticism is a big reason why Minchey is in this battle. If Minchey is going to win the battle, and more importantly thrive as the starter, he needs to become more consistent. This means from a day-to-day standpoint, but also snap to snap. Minchey will have days where he looks like a player capable of being a dominant quarterback, but he doesn't do it consistently enough. In both of the last two Blue-Gold Games, Minchey has shown flashes of being a big time playmaker from inside and outside of the pocket. The issue is in each of the those games he's also started slow, dealt with bouts of inconsistency and missed too many easy throws. If he can improve his consistency Minchey will have a chance to win the job. Advertisement BIGGEST QUESTIONS Here are the biggest questions surrounding Minchey heading into the 2025 campaign. 1) Can Minchey win the starting job - Before Minchey can prove what he can do as the starter he has to win the starting job. That's going to be a major challenge, but if he can build on his spring success he'll have a shot to do so. 2) Can Minchey be a more consistent player - This is the biggest area where Minchey must improve, which was discussed above. If he can't eliminate the up-and-down performances it will be tough for him to win the job. The highs need to remain but he needs to eliminate the lows. If he wins the starting job that will also need to carry into the fall. It will be hard for the Notre Dame offense to be good enough to compete for a championship if the quarterback struggles with consistency from game to game, or series to series. The floor has to be raised, and if Minchey can do that he'll be an effective player. Advertisement 3) Is Minchey able to take command of the offense - This was a question with Carr as well and the reality is the starting quarterback has to show the ability to command the offense. Part of taking command is demanding leadership with his work ethic, attitude and ability to run the offense. The other part of showing the command needed to lead an elite offense is being able to handle the mental part of running the offense. Being good at protection calls, getting the offense into good looks and making sure everyone on offense is doing what they need to do are all parts of being comfortable in the offense. 4) Will his pass game effectiveness be close enough - There are two things I'm confident about when evaluating the quarterbacks in the quarterback competition. One is that Carr has the best passing ability. Two is that Minchey is the more dynamic athlete and runner. If Mike Denbrock takes the offense the direction I think he wants to the passing part will be very important. That means Minchey will need to close the passing gap between him and Carr enough to allow his playmaking ability to carry the day. If there's a big gap in the throwing game Carr will start, but if Minchey can make that advantage minimal and it becomes more about his playmaking ability he will not only win the job, but he'll become an impact starting quarterback for the Irish. A SUCCESSFUL SEASON FOR MINCHEY WOULD BE .... To begin, it would be one where he wins the starting quarterback job and starts off well. A good season for Minchey will need to include a fast start, because struggling in the first couple of games could result in the staff wanting to turn quicker to Carr. Notre Dame will also need its quarterback to play well in order to start the season off with wins over Miami and Texas A&M. A fast start requires Minchey to show good early command, a higher level of consistency and then putting his playmaking skills on full display. If Minchey doesn't win the job a good season is still possible. Being ready to thrive if his number is called is key, but Minchey being a playmaker in fall camp could also result in him forcing himself into a niche role where he can use his running skills.
