Boeing's fighter jet workers in the St. Louis area reject a contract offer
Boeing Co. expects more than 3,200 union workers at three St. Louis-area plants that produce U.S. fighter jets to strike after they rejected a proposed contract Sunday that included a 20% wage increase over four years. The International Machinists and Aerospace Workers union said the vote by District 837 members was overwhelmingly against the proposed contract. The existing contract was to expire at 11:59 p.m. Central time Sunday, but the union said a 'cooling off' period would keep a strike from beginning for another week, until Aug. 4. Union leaders had recommended approving the offer, calling it a 'landmark' agreement when it was announced last week. Organizers said then that the offer would improve medical, pension and overtime benefits in addition to pay. The vote came two days before Boeing planned to announce its second quarter earnings, after saying earlier this month that it had delivered 150 commercial airliners and 36 military aircraft and helicopters during the quarter, up from 130 and 26 during the first quarter. Its stock closed Friday at $233.06 a share, up $1.79. The union did not say specifically why members rejected the contract, only that it 'fell short of addressing the priorities and sacrifices' of the union's workers. Last fall, Boeing offered a general wage increase of 38% over four years to end a 53-day strike by 33,000 aircraft workers producing passenger aircraft. 'Our members are standing together to demand a contract that respects their work and ensures a secure future,' the union said in a statement. Dan Gillan, general manager and senior Boeing executive in St. Louis, said in a statement that the company is 'focused on preparing for a strike.' He described the proposal as 'the richest contract offer' ever presented to the St. Louis union. 'No talks are scheduled with the union,' said Gillan, who is also vice president for Boeing Air Dominance, the division for the production of several military jets, including the U.S. Navy's Super Hornet, as well as the Air Force 's Red Hawk training aircraft.

Rangers dispatch Braves for sixth straight win
July 27 - Wyatt Langford drove in three runs with a first-inning double and Josh Smith and Josh Jung added two RBI each to back a solid start by rookie Jack Leiter as the soaring Texas Rangers waylaid the Atlanta Braves 8-1 on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game interleague series in Arlington, Texas. The Rangers won their sixth straight game, earned their second consecutive series sweep and captured their fourth series in a row. Texas is 8-1 since the All-Star Break and pulled to within four games of Houston in the American League West standings while collecting 10 hits, three by Smith. Atlanta, mired in fourth place in the National League East, dropped its fifth straight game and seventh of nine contests after the break. The Braves managed just four hits on Sunday against three Texas pitchers and are season-worst 16 games under .500. Leiter was outstanding for the Rangers, allowing a run on two hits and three walks over six innings. He tied a season high with seven strikeouts and won his career-high third straight start. Brad Elder (4-7) was ineffective from the start for the Braves, allowing eight runs on six hits, four walks and a hit batter over 2 2/3 innings while pitching about 50 miles southeast of his hometown of Decatur, Texas. The Rangers set the pace early, taking a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-out, three-run double by Langford that drove in Smith, Marcus Semien and Adolis Garcia, all of whom reached without a hit. Atlanta cut into its deficit in the second as Sean Murphy's bloop, ground-rule double scored Drake Baldwin, who had walked. But the Rangers swung back in the bottom of the frame, adding a pair of runs on Smith's two-run home run over the right field fence that scored Jonah Heim and made it 5-1. In the third, Texas loaded the bases off Elder with a single, a walk and a hit batsman before Josh Jung plated Garcia and Langford with a single. Heim then drove in Carter with a single that ended the Atlanta starter's stint. That was more than enough for the Rangers and way too much of a hole from which Atlanta to climb. --Field Level Media

Cubs hold on to lead for crosstown series win over White Sox
July 27 - Pete Crow-Armstrong went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Ben Brown pitched five strong innings to lift the visiting Chicago Cubs to a 5-4 victory against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. An early spurt staked the Cubs to a 2-1 lead before they held on to take two of three in the crosstown series. Daniel Palencia worked around a hit-by-pitch with two outs in the ninth inning to earn his 14th save. White Sox left fielder Andrew Benintendi reached reliever Ryan Brasier for a three-run home run in the eighth inning, his second homer of the game, to bring the White Sox within the final margin. Ian Happ scored the deciding run in the top half when White Sox third baseman Colson Montgomery was called for obstruction in a rundown between home and third. It was one of three White Sox errors in the game. The Cubs scored a pair of first-inning runs against opener Grant Taylor, who struck out Michael Busch to begin the game before encountering trouble. Crow-Armstrong punctuated the rally with a two-run double that followed a double and walk. Benintendi cut the deficit in half with a solo home run against Brown in the bottom of the inning. Brown (5-7) regrouped from a rough relief outing Tuesday, his first major league appearance since June 23. He spaced one run and three hits in five innings with zero walks and four strikeouts. Right-hander Sean Burke kept the White Sox afloat with 4 2/3 innings of two-run, five hit relief. Burke retired eight straight Cubs during one stretch while matching a career high with eight strikeouts against just one walk. Burke allowed the leadoff man to reach just once, and it hurt him. Carson Kelly led off the sixth with a single and scored on Nico Hoerner's two-out RBI single. Matt Shaw extended his hitting streak to nine games with a run-scoring double one batter later. Taylor (0-2) allowed two runs and two hits in one inning. He walked one and struck out two. Luis Robert Jr. returned to the White Sox lineup after missing the past two games with adductor soreness.
