Xabi Alonso: "We need to take positives today, and move on for the next one"
Xabi Alonso spoke to the media after a 3-2 victory for Real Madrid CF, against German side Borussia Dortmund in the quarterfinal of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup tournament. With the result, Alonso, who coached Bayer 04 Leverkusen prior to joining the Spanish champions last month, is 2-2-2 as a head coach against BVB all-time.
When asked to summarise the match, Alonso said: 'Everything was going under control with the result, not conceding much, but the last 10 minutes were kind of crazy. We lost a little bit of our shape, our intensity, and luckily, nothing went through - but overall, good eighty minutes and last ten minutes, we need to improve.'

Regarding 21-year-old Madrid-born forward Gonzalo García, who scored in the tenth minute, Alonso praised him for another decent performance: 'He is doing great work for the team - he is helping the team and he is running into the right positions in the box. He is a proper number 9, and we are happy that he is doing that work.'
García has four goals in five matches at this tournament for Real Madrid CF. His goal early in the match tied him for top scorer at the Club World Cup, with SL Benfica right-winger Ángel Di María, Al-Hilal SFC forward Marcos Leonardo, and Borussia Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy, who also scored in the match, being the other players on four goals. With the other three all eliminated, García needs to score to definitively hold the lead in the race for the Golden Boot.
Alonso was asked about Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose presence in the match was uncertain due to the recent passing of former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota. He said regarding the 26-year-old English right-back and the impact the last few days have had on him: 'Yeah, he is just starting out with a new club, after joining from Liverpool, and especially in the last few days, but I am happy that he played this game.'
Lastly, he commented about facing Paris Saint-Germain in the second semifinal: 'It is going to be a great challenge for us, to face PSG, but we need to take positives from today, and move on for the next one.'
The second semifinal between Real Madrid CF and Paris Saint-Germain starts on Wednesday, 15.00 (EDT) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

Thibaut Courtois ends Real Madrid's 3-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund with a leaping save
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Real Madrid's Club World Cup quarterfinal against Borussia Dortmund had taken three crazy turns during nine minutes of second-half stoppage time when Marcel Sabitzer chested the ball and sent a right-footed volley toward Thibaut Courtois' post. Courtois leapt to his right, extended the long arm on his 6-foot-7 frame and just managed to get his gloved fingertips on the ball, knocking it down. Courtois hit the ground as the ball bounded up. He looked skyward, planted his right hand to regain his balance, grabbed the ball with both hands on the second bounce and fell onto it with his chest. Sabitzer turned his back to the goal and put both hands on his head as Brazilian referee Ramon Abatti walked by, raised both hands and blew the final whistle. 'In football it's like this. All the teams that are here, they compete until the end,' Courtois said after Real's 3-2 victory Saturday . 'A game could become like this at any minute and that's what happened at the end.' Voted the top goalkeeper in 2018, Courtois has won a pair of Champions League titles with Real Madrid along with a two Premier League championships and four in La Liga. 'We are so lucky that we have Thibaut on goal because Thibaut is one of those keepers that makes you win games and today that save has been so decisive,' Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said. Gonzalo García and Fran García scored in the first 20 minutes as Real Madrid built a 2-0 lead. Gonzalo García tying Benfica's Ángel Di María and Al Hilal's Marcos Leonardo for the tournament lead with four goals. 'Not even in my best dreams did I think it would go this well,' said the 21-year-old Gonzalo García, who played just five La Liga matches over the last two seasons. Real Madrid's lead still stood when 5 minutes of stoppage time was signaled. Dortmund's Maximilian Beier started the zaniness when he scored three minutes into stoppage time after Antonio Rüdiger's failed clearance. Kylian Mbappé, who entered in the 67th, restored a two-goal lead one minute later with a spectacular bicycle kick, beating goalkeeper Gregor Kobel from 6 yards from Arda Güler's long cross. Mbappé then held up two fingers with his right hand and formed a zero with his left as a tribute to Diogo Jota, flashing the No. 20 of the Liverpool player who died in a car crash Thursday . That wasn't all. Serhou Guirassy converted a penalty kick in the eighth minute of added time after he was fouled by Dean Huijsen, who received a red card and will miss the semifinal. Dortmund pushed for an equalizer. Courtois then came up with a stop for the ages. 'It is a great big save. That's the reason why he is the best goalkeeper in the world,' Dortmund coach Niko Kovač said. Madrid advanced to a semifinal match against Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, a day after Chelsea meets the Brazilian club Fluminense. 'The nervousness, we need to learn to be more calm in the next game and finish the game in possession,' Courtois said. ___ Associated Press Writer Nuria Diaz Muñoz contributed to this report. ___ AP soccer:

Lionel Messi has two goals as Inter Miami returns to MLS play after FIFA Club World Cup
Lionel Messi is back to doing Lionel Messi things in Major League Soccer. Messi dribbled past nearly every defender in his path to score two goals, Tadeo Allende and Telasco Segovia also scored, and Inter Miami beat CF Montreal, 4-1, during their match on Saturday, July 5. You couldn't tell Messi was facing the worst club in the MLS Eastern Conference in Inter Miami's first match since being eliminated by Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain in the FIFA Club World Cup on Sunday, June 29. The Argentine World Cup champion and eight-time Ballon d'Or winner played with the fire and grit he has always displayed during his legendary career, sending the fans at Stade Saputo in Montreal home with a memorable performance and waves in their direction as he walked off the pitch. Messi nearly had a hat trick in the first minute of stoppage time, but he knew he was offsides after kicking the ball into the net. 'We have to understand that Leo is happy playing soccer and whenever he is fit to play, he will play, because he is happy on the field,' Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano said after the victory. 'Clearly, we have an extra advantage when he plays, and we want to use that advantage as much as possible and in as many games as possible. … He's clearly someone different – a different player – and we're lucky to have him, to have him playing for us. And well, today he made the difference again.' Messi scored his first goal in the 40th minute, dribbling into the box down the right side, and firing his legendary left boot toward the left side of the net. His second goal in the 62nd minute was just as impressive: He dribbled from near-midfield to the front of the goal area, maneuvering around four Montreal defenders before securing the brace. Messi assisted Allende's goal in the 33rd minute, celebrated when Segovia's goal outside the penalty area kissed off the cross bar in the 60th minute, nearly set Luis Suarez up for a goal later in the second half, and pushed for a hat trick as time expired. GOLD CUP: USMNT could change its World Cup narrative in final vs. Mexico Messi also made such a silly mistake two minutes into the match. He attempted to clear possession, sending a pass between two Inter Miami teammates that was intercepted and scored by Montreal's Prince Owusu for an early 1-0 deficit. Messi raised his hands over his head in disgust. Then, he responded. Inter Miami is sixth place in the MLS Eastern Conference with 32 points after 17 games played this season. They have four games in hand because of the Club World Cup, while most of the league has played 20 or 21 games already. Inter Miami was in a tie for third place before the Club World Cup began, so the urgency for Messi to play and for the club to keep its momentum from the tournament were imperative. 'Overall, we played a great match. It's never easy to get back into the competition after the Club World Cup, and the players did it perfectly,' Mascherano said. 'It's a great night. We took the three points that were very necessary to start thinking about the MLS again.' Inter Miami 4, CF Montreal 1: Lionel Messi scores second goal Lionel Messi is playing like a man on a mission, scoring his second goal in the 62nd minute to increase Inter Miami's lead to 4-1. Messi stretched his hands and ran toward the right corner to celebrate. CF Montreal 1, Inter Miami 0: Messi mistake leads to early deficit Two minutes into the match, and Lionel Messi gave away possession on the wrong side of the pitch due to some miscommunication.
