Eight-run second inning propels Blue Jays past Athletics
Ernie Clement homered and had five RBIs, Jose Berrios struck out nine in six innings and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the visiting Athletics 12-0 on Thursday night.
Clement had a three-run home run and a two-run double, both in an eight-run second inning in the opener of a four-game series.
Bo Bichette had a two-run homer and three RBIs, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. added a two-run homer and George Springer had a solo shot.
Clement's five RBIs in the second tied a club record for an inning, according to Sportsnet Stats. Edwin Encarnacion had five RBIs in the seventh inning against the Houston Astros on July 26, 2013. The five RBIs were also a career-best.
Clement and Alejandro Kirk each had three hits for the Blue Jays, who had 18 hits in winning their second in a row. The Athletics have lost 14 of 15.
Berrios (2-2) allowed two hits and two walks while matching his season best in strikeouts.
Seven of the second-inning runs were charged to left-hander Jacob Lopez (0-3), who allowed six hits and a walk in 1 2/3 innings.
Kirk led off the second with a single, struggling Anthony Santander walked on four pitches and Clement homered to left center on a first-pitch slider that stayed in the middle of the plate. Jonatan Clase singled to extend his hit streak to six games, stole second and scored on Bichette's double to center. Guerrero homered to left center on a fastball over the plate to extend his on-base streak to 29 games. Springer singled and Anthony Madonado replaced Lopez. Kirk singled, Santander walked and Clement stroked a two-run double to left.
Toronto added three runs in the third against Maldonado. Clase walked and Bichette hit a two-run homer to left. Springer homered to left with two out. Kirk walked and Maldonado was replaced by Sean Newcomb, who pitched 3 1/3 runless innings.
Addison Barger doubled and pinch hitter Ali Sanchez singled in the seventh against Hogan Harris. Kirk hit a sacrifice fly.
Oakland reserve catcher Willie MacIver pitched a runless eighth, working around three singles.

Kirk, Lukes, Bo Bichette, Will Wagner and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. each had two hits as Toronto won for the 11th time in its past 12 games to remain two games ahead of the New York Yankees in the American League East. Guerrero's first hit was the 1,000th of his career. Scherzer (1-0) took a shutout into the sixth inning before serving up a two-run homer to Nick Kurtz and a solo shot to Tyler Soderstrom. He allowed three runs, five hits and one walk and struck out a season-best eight in his fifth start of the season. Max Muncy also homered for the Athletics, his coming off Jeff Hoffman with one out in the ninth inning. Zack Gelof followed with a walk and Denzel Clarke singled. Gelof then scored on a two-out wild pitch to pull the A's within 7-5 before Brent Rooker recorded an RBI single. Hoffman then fanned Kurtz to end the contest. Kurtz, Muncy, Rooker and Soderstrom each had two hits for the Athletics, who fell to 0-5 against the Blue Jays this season. Luis Severino (2-11) gave up five runs - though just one earned -- and seven hits over 4 2/3 innings. He struck out eight and walked two while dropping to 0-9 in 12 home starts. A's All-Star shortstop Jacob Wilson (left hand contusion) missed his third straight game. The Blue Jays manufactured a run in the fourth inning and another during their fifth-inning uprising. Bichette doubled to start the fourth and Kirk drew a one-out walk before Severino hit Wagner with a pitch to load the bases. Ernie Clement followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. In the fifth, Toronto sent 11 batters to the plate. George Springer reached on a one-out throwing error by Gelof and Guerrero delivered a single for the milestone hit. With two out, the Blue Jays called for a double steal. Shea Langeliers threw to second and shortstop Muncy caught the ball in front of the bag and threw home. Muncy one-hopped the throw and Langeliers wasn't able to glove it as Springer scored. Addison Barger followed with a single and then stole second. Kirk then sent a two-run single to center to make it 4-0. Jack Perkins replaced Severino and hit Wagner with a pitch and walked Clement to load the bases. Myles Straw then singled to right to knock in Kirk. Lukes followed with a hard-shot grounder that took a bad hop and slammed into the right shoulder of Kurtz at first. Wagner and Clement scored to make it 7-0.

(AP) — Max Scherzer struck out eight batters and allowed five hits over six innings to win for the first time in nearly a year, and the Toronto Blue Jays scored six unearned runs in the fifth inning to beat the Athletics 7-6 on Friday night The AL East-leading Blue Jays have won 13 of 15 games. Scherzer (1-0) became the first Toronto pitcher 40 years and older to win since R.A. Dickey on May 4, 2015, and fifth in team history. It also was the first victory for the three-time Cy Young Award winner since he and the Texas Rangers beat the Chicago White Sox 2-1 on July 25 of last year. Toronto first baseball Vladimir Guerrero Jr. singled with one out in the fifth for his 1,000th career hit. A's starter Luis Severino (2-11) showed flashes of why he was signed to a $67 million, three-year contract in December, striking out eight batters. Ronald Acuña Jr. replaced in Home Run Derby by Atlanta teammate and fellow All-Star Matt Olson
ATLANTA (AP) — Ronald Acuña Jr. won't participate in the Home Run Derby, replaced Friday by Atlanta teammate and fellow All-Star Matt Olson. Acuña is a starting outfielder for the National League and still expected to play in the All-Star Game on his home field. Olson is a reserve infielder. Instead of Acuña, Olson will try to become the first Atlanta player to win the Home Run Derby on Monday night. He could become the fourth to win at home. The All-Star Game is Tuesday night. Olson competed in the 2021 derby while with the Athletics. He was eliminated in the first round. The 31-year-old entered the weekend with 17 homers this season. The other scheduled participants are Brent Rooker, the first for the Athletics since Olson, along with Minnesota's Byron Buxton, Tampa Bay's Junior Caminero, Jazz Chisholm Jr. of the Yankees, Pittsburgh's Oneil Cruz, Seattle's Cal Raleigh and James Wood of Washington.
