Amid rains, AI flight overshoots city runway

Time of India3 days ago
Mumbai: An Air India aircraft overshot the Mumbai airport runway after touching down amid heavy rains Monday. The eventful landing saw the A320 aircraft suffer three tyre bursts, veer off the main runway into the unpaved portion, then onto a taxiway before it came to a halt.
No passengers or crew were hurt.
The incident occurred after AI 2744 from Kochi touched down on primary runway 27 at 9.27am. It veered about 16m off the runway, took out a few lights along the runway edge and taxiway and damaged a nearby signage before coming to a halt, said a source, adding the pilots then taxied the plane to parking bay. The aircraft sustained serious damage; the engine cowling was left partially deformed, and the tail section had foreign object damage.
While a couple of flights close behind in the sequence to land continued with their landing, the main runway was shut down minutes after the accident.
After the AI flight accident led to the closure of the primary runway, flight movements were moved to the shorter secondary runway of the Mumbai airport. A total of eight incoming flights were diverted to other airports, while three flights were forced to abort the landing and climbed for a second attempt at touchdown, said a source.

The primary runway was repaired and reopened to flight movements at 12.03pm. A team from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation reached the airport to investigate the accident.
Air India, in a statement, said: "Flight AI2744, operating from Kochi to Mumbai, experienced heavy rain during landing, resulting in a runway excursion after touchdown. The aircraft taxied safely to the gate, and all passengers and crew members have since disembarked.
The aircraft has been grounded for checks."
A Mumbai airport spokesperson said that the airport's emergency response teams were immediately activated to manage the runway excursion. "All passengers and crew are safe. There were minor damages reported to the airport's primary runway — 09/27. In order to ensure continuity of operations, the secondary runway 14/32 was activated."
In the past, there have been quite a few incidents of runway excursions at Mumbai airport during the monsoon. In Sep 2023, a VSR Ventures Learjet 45 aircraft flying in from Visakhapatnam experienced a runway excursion on landing at Mumbai during heavy rains and poor visibility.

London: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday concluded his two-day visit to the UK during which the two countries inked a landmark free trade pact. PM Modi was hosted by his UK counterpart, Keir Starmer, at Chequers – the official country residence of the British Prime Minister – for an intense session of talks that also covered regional and global issues of mutual interest. "Concluding a very important UK visit. The outcomes of this visit will benefit our future generations and contribute to shared growth and prosperity. Gratitude to the PM Keir Starmer, the UK government and people for their warmth," PM Modi said in social media post. He leaves for the Maldives for the second leg of his two-nation tour, soon after an audience with King Charles III at his Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, eastern England. He presented the British monarch with a Sonoma dove tree, or handkerchief tree to be planted at the royal estate in the Autumn as part of his environmental initiative "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam". "The leaders celebrated the landmark UK-India Free Trade Agreement, which was signed today and will see growth in every part of the country – delivering on the government's Plan for Change," 10 Downing Street said in a readout of the prime ministerial engagement at Chequers. "The leaders also discussed the importance of the UK-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which will see closer collaboration on trade, defence, security, technology and education – underscored by the close and historic relationship between the two countries," it said. "The leaders also discussed the Air India plane crash last month, and said their sympathies are with all the families and loved ones of the victims. The Prime Minister said the UK will continue to support all those affected by the tragedy," it added. PM Modi has extended an invitation to Starmer to visit India, which the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said has been accepted and officials will now be working out the details. Downing Street noted that both leaders "looked forward to seeing one another soon".

Air India SFO-Bengaluru flight delayed eight hours, operates without Business class due to door fault

New Delhi: Air India's Flight AI176 from San Francisco to Bengaluru via Kolkata on July 21 turned into a nightmare for nearly 160 passengers, as the Boeing 777 aircraft took off eight hours behind schedule due to a malfunctioning door in the Business Class section. Passengers were allegedly misinformed for hours that the delay was due to aircraft cleaning. Passengers reported that the Business and Premium Economy sections were cordoned off with tape before the flight finally departed at 5:45 am on July 22. According to sources, five Business Class passengers who refused to travel in Economy were left behind, while 25 others were reassigned to Economy seating. The flight, primarily carrying senior citizens returning from visits to their children in Silicon Valley, was marked by confusion and a lack of communication. Sangeetha Krishnan (name changed), a passenger traveling with her three young children, recounted, 'The SFO-India flight is usually packed at this time of year, and we had booked our Economy tickets eight months in advance at ₹75,000 each. Our scheduled departure was 9 pm (US time) on July 21. First, we were told it would be delayed to 11 pm, then to midnight. The only explanation provided was that cleaning was taking longer than expected.' It wasn't until just before 5 am on July 22 that passengers were informed of a technical issue with a door located near the Business and Premium Economy section. Only Economy Class passengers were allowed to board. 'There was a lot of anxiety once the technical issue was announced, especially given recent aviation incidents in India. Many elderly passengers were in wheelchairs, unsure of what to do. A toddler cried non-stop the entire time,' she said. 'The flight finally took off at 5:45 am. The affected seats were sealed off with tape to prevent access. We missed our connecting flight from Bengaluru to Chennai and couldn't be with my elderly father on his birthday. My parents ended up waiting at Chennai airport for eight hours,' Krishnan added. Other passengers also missed connecting flights to destinations such as Coimbatore, Chennai, and Madurai. A senior citizen couple traveling to Sivakasi had to book a cab from Bengaluru to Madurai to continue their journey. According to a senior pilot, the aircraft was leased from Delta Airlines and typically has around 50 seats in Business and Premium Economy, along with 270 seats in Economy Class. Air India confirmed the incident in a statement. They said, 'Flight AI176 operating from San Francisco to Bengaluru on July 21 experienced a technical issue related to one of the aircraft doors. As the fault could not be immediately rectified, the door was declared inoperative. In accordance with regulatory safety protocols, some passengers were shifted to Economy Class. The reason for the change was communicated to all affected passengers. Alternative travel or full refunds were offered to five passengers who chose not to travel with the newly assigned seats.' The airline added,'The flight made a scheduled technical stopover at Kolkata for refuelling due to airspace closures over Pakistan and parts of the Middle East. Our ground staff in San Francisco made every possible effort to minimise inconvenience caused to passengers.' This route, originally launched with much fanfare on January 9, 2021, featured an all-women cockpit crew on its inaugural direct non-stop flight from San Francisco to Bengaluru. Operations were temporarily suspended last month when the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) mandated extensive checks on all Boeing aircraft following the Ahmedabad runway incident.
