Taiwan ex-soldier sentenced after spying for China
Beijing claims the self-ruled island as part of its territory and has threatened to use force to bring it under its control.
The two sides have been spying on each other for decades, but experts say the threat to Taiwan is greater given the risk of a Chinese invasion.
The defendant, identified by his family name Chen, was convicted of violating the Criminal Code of the Armed Forces for passing the documents for a payment of NT$80,000 ($2,700), the court said in a statement.
It did not identify Chen's rank or what kind of information was leaked.
In February 2023, Chen obtained electronic files of military secret-level documents from a classmate under the pretext of 'preparing for supervision by his superiors', printed them out and took them out of the camp.
Chen then used his smartphone to photograph the files and sent them to a man he met on the messaging app Line in 2022 when he applied for a loan, the court said.
'He handed over our country's military secrets in exchange for money, which seriously damaged national security,' it added.
The court added that Chen received a lenient sentence because he confessed and showed remorse during the investigation and trial.
Local newspaper Liberty Times reported that Chen was a former Marines sergeant addicted to online gaming and owed huge debts.
He can appeal the ruling.

TAIPEI: Taiwanese authorities have dismantled a significant ticket scalping operation that illegally resold tickets for G-Dragon's recent concerts in Taipei, netting the ring an estimated NT$20 million (RM2.87 million) in illicit profits. According to reports from China Times and Liberty Times yesterday, Taiwan's Criminal Investigation Bureau apprehended four suspects, including a man identified as Liu, for their involvement in illegally reselling tickets to G-Dragon's world tour, which took place at the Taipei Arena from July 11 to 13. A raid on the group's premises on July 15 uncovered substantial evidence: over 1,500 ticket serial codes, more than 1,000 physical tickets for the G-Dragon concerts, 500 BlackPink tickets for an upcoming October show in Kaohsiung, and NT$164,000 (RM23,557) in cash. Liu reportedly collaborated with a Hong Kong-based ticketing engineer who utilised hacking tools and ID-generating software to purchase large quantities of tickets. Liu allegedly paid a service fee of NT$2,000–3,000 (RM287–430) per ticket, which were then resold at grossly inflated prices. Tickets originally priced at NT$800 (RM115) were resold for as much as NT$9,800 (RM1,407). Even more shockingly, top-tier tickets, initially costing NT$8,980 (RM1,290), were flipped for an astonishing NT$55,000 (RM7,900). The scalpers operated from a hotel located near the venue, where they created fake IDs and hired staff to help buyers circumvent ID checks at the concert. Around 300 scalped tickets were reportedly used on July 11, leading to widespread outrage among fans and numerous complaints to the Taipei City Department of Cultural Affairs. Consequently, some buyers were denied entry and are now seeking refunds. This incident has reignited criticism of Taiwan's real-name ticketing system. A similar scandal occurred in March 2023 during BlackPink's tour, where tickets originally priced at NT$8,800 (RM1,264) were scalped for an exorbitant NT$400,000 (RM57,455). In response to such persistent abuses, Taiwan revised its Cultural and Creative Industries Development Act in 2023. Under the updated legislation, scalpers now face significant fines of up to 50 times the resold ticket price.

Anwar, govt cleared as court strikes their names from Mukhriz Mahathir's RM5m tax challenge
KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the government succeeded today in having their names removed from a judicial review application filed by Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir. Mukhriz is challenging the Inland Revenue Board's (IRB) issuance of additional tax assessment notices for the years 2017 to 2019, demanding payment of over RM5 million. High Court Judge Datuk Amarjeet Singh allowed the application by Anwar, in his capacity as Finance Minister, and the government to strike out their names as respondents in the judicial review proceedings. However, the court dismissed their bid to expunge several paragraphs in Mukhriz's affidavit that made reference to both respondents, and fixed December 16 for the hearing of the substantive judicial review application. On January 2, Judge Amarjeet granted leave for Mukhriz to commence judicial review proceedings, having found that the case raised arguable grounds. Earlier, senior federal counsel Nur Irmawatie Daud, representing both the second and third respondents, argued that the additional assessment notices were issued by the first respondent, the Inland Revenue's chief executive officer or director-general. 'The judicial review application is scandalous, frivolous and an abuse of court process,' she submitted. However, Mukhriz's counsel, Syed Afiq Syed Albakri, contended that the second respondent had influenced the first respondent in the issuance of the said notices against his client. Mukhriz, 60, filed the judicial review application on December 20 last year, naming the IRB's CEO or Director-General, Anwar and the government as the first to third respondents respectively. Couple charged with trafficking 67kg cannabis in Kuala Krai
KUALA KRAI: A married couple was charged in the Magistrates' Court here today with two offences involving the trafficking and possession of cannabis and methamphetamine two weeks ago. No plea was recorded from Wan Muhamad Aziem Ashraf Wan Mustafa, 31, and his wife Wan Matraf Azlinda Wan Mat, 49, as the charges fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court. According to the first charge, the couple is accused of trafficking 67.75 kg of cannabis by the roadside at Padang Sembilan here, at approximately 4 am on July 11. They were charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for the death penalty or life imprisonment and a minimum of 15 strokes of the cane, upon conviction. For the second charge, they are accused of possessing 15.1 g of methamphetamine at the same location, date, and time. The charge is framed under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a maximum sentence of five years' imprisonment and up to nine strokes of the cane, upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Mazlinda Mohd Nor appeared for the prosecution, while the accused were unrepresented.
