National Child Protection Week: What to do when a child goes missing
According to the South African Police Service's (SAPS) Missing Persons Bureau, released in 2013, a child goes missing every five hours. Despite the alarming rate, no updated national statistics have been made public in over a decade.
SAPS reported that between 2020 and 2025, it has reunited 2,963 missing children with their families—1,919 girls and 967 boys. While these figures offer a glimmer of hope, they only scratch the surface of a much deeper issue.
Too Many Still Missing
Data from Missing Children South Africa (MCSA) indicates that 77% of children reported missing are eventually found. This number might seem big but it still leaves a 23% unaccounted for. These children are presumed to be victims of trafficking, violence, or worse. Children remain among the most vulnerable to gender-based violence and exploitation.
'We cannot ignore the fact that nearly a quarter of missing children are never found,' said a representative from MCSA. 'This is a national emergency that requires immediate attention, sustained awareness, and coordinated community and government action.'
What To Do When a Child Goes Missing
Don't wait—report immediately at the nearest police station.
Bring a recent, clear photograph and detailed description of the child and their last known whereabouts.
Complete the SAPS 55(A) form, which allows authorities to circulate the child's information.
Get a case number, and stay in contact with the investigating officer.
Notify Missing Children South Africa with the official case number and required documentation.
If your child returns, you must inform both SAPS and MCSA to close the case and avoid unnecessary continuation of the search.

Roodepoort mother accused of killing son: Bail hearing continues today
Final evidence and cross-examination are expected to be heard today in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court as the bail hearing of Tiffany Nicole Meek (31), the mother accused of murdering her 11-year-old son, Jayden-Lee Meek, continues. However, he confirmed that on May 16, a pair of underwear with no visible blood was observed for the first time by him and the forensic photographer. A towel containing blood traces was also found in the bathtub, but it was not sent for forensic analysis. Diko explained that the accused was not arrested immediately because investigations, including the post-mortem, took time to finalise. He further testified that releasing Meek on bail could pose a risk to her safety, the safety of the public and public peace. He also expressed concern that she might evade trial or interfere with potential witnesses. 'There are still outstanding investigations to be completed. If the accused relocates to her father's home in Durban, I will have difficulty monitoring her in line with the court's conditions,' he said. 'Given the community's outcry and ongoing protests, I believe she is safer in custody. South Africans are concerned and seeking answers, and I urge the court to consider this.' Final evidence expected to be submitted includes a community petition handed to Florida police, DNA results, still photographs and video footage. Until further notice, Meek remains in custody. City Power arrests 7 in major crackdown on copper theft and infrastructure sabotage
City Power (CP) confirmed the arrests of seven suspects over the past week, including three employees apprehended on Mandela Day. These arrests in Reuven and Lenasia were part of broader efforts to dismantle internal corruption, sabotage and theft threatening the city's electricity network. The most alarming development occurred in the early hours of July 18, when a trade assistant, cleaner and an Expanded Public Works Programme worker were intercepted while trying to exit CP's Reuven service delivery centre (SDC) with about 840 pieces of suspected stolen copper pipes. These goods, with a street value of over R200 000, were concealed in boxes inside a company vehicle. CP security officers detected the theft during a routine checkpoint inspection. The SAPS was immediately alerted and took the suspects into custody on site. All three now face criminal charges. 'It is disturbing and disappointing to find some of our staff allegedly involved in the theft of public infrastructure. These are people entrusted with safeguarding our network, yet they've betrayed that responsibility. We will pursue disciplinary action without fear or favour,' said CP CEO Tshifularo Mashava. These arrests came just days after a separate high-stakes operation in Denver, where CP security personnel, the SAPS, the JMPD and private partners came under fire during a shootout with suspected infrastructure vandals. On the night of July 13, at 23:20, security teams responded to suspicious activity on 485 Main Reef Road, Denver. Upon arrival, officers encountered criminals actively digging a 35m trench, believed to be part of a cable theft or sabotage operation. The criminals opened fire, leading to an exchange of gunfire under the cover of darkness. Fortunately, there were no injuries. A swift and co-ordinated response led to the arrest of three people, aged between 21 and 23, at the scene/ They face charges including housebreaking, malicious damage to property and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. 'The shootout in Denver underscores the dangerous and organised nature of these crimes. We are dealing with syndicates that are armed and unafraid to confront law enforcement. We commend the bravery of our teams and partners, and we will not relent in the fight to protect Johannesburg's electricity infrastructure,' added Mashava. These arrests form part of an ongoing internal clean-up campaign launched by CP in March. To date, 15 staff are undergoing disciplinary action, many of them linked to fraud, collusion with contractors and theft. Forty-seven disciplinary cases have been processed since March 2024, including multiple suspensions and one criminal prosecution. Those implicated include electricians, security officers, team leaders and senior managers. Gauteng police made a major breakthrough and arrested a prominent businessman and three alleged hitmen for orchestrating the assassination of DJ Sumbody and a separate hit-style murder. Accused Four men – Sandton businessman Katiso 'KT' Molefe, former police detective Michael Pule Tau, Musa Kekana and Tiego Floyd Mabusela – appeared in the Alexandra Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. The matter was postponed to next Tuesday to allow for further investigations and a formal bail application. Kenny Kunene suspended Meanwhile, the Patriotic Alliance (PA) has suspended its deputy president, Kenny Kunene, from all party activities for a month. Party leader Gayton McKenzie dealt Kunene the blow on Tuesday. McKenzie said Kunene will be investigated after he was found at the home of alleged mastermind of DJ Sumbody's murder, Katiso 'KT' Molefe. In an explosive revelation, Kunene confirmed that he was at Molefe's house when police arrived to arrest the suspected killer. Kunene claims he was at Molefe's house to facilitate a meeting for a journalist from his online publication, Africa Global News, for a 'potential exclusive story.'
