Local community leader receives accolades for service
During the ceremony, held in Soshanguve on July 28, Sergeant Mehala handed over the accolades to Chauke.
Chauke has spent over 15 years empowering learners across Pretoria through motivational talks, educational initiatives, and community development projects.
He was awarded two Community Upliftment awards for Driving Social Transformation and Youth Development, as well as a certificate for his partnerships with Soshanguve SAPS.
Chauke, who is a University of Pretoria certified youth mentor and leader, has dedicated his life to uplifting the youth – turning his qualifications and passion into purpose.
His influence has been felt deeply in schools such as Lotus Gardens Secondary School, Fusion Secondary School, Elizabeth Matsemela Secondary School, and Lethabong School of Specialisation, where he has consistently poured into the next generation.
Beyond school walls, Chauke has hosted community talent shows, educational workshops, and business seminars, creating platforms for young people to discover their potential and develop key life and leadership skills.
Speaking after receiving the awards, Chauke expressed heartfelt gratitude: 'These awards are not just mine – they belong to every learner, educator, and community leader who allowed me to serve.
'I especially dedicate this honour to my passion for youth empowerment, which continues to drive everything I do.'
He also extended his thanks to various radio stations and TV platforms that have helped amplify his message over the years, making it possible to reach more young people across South Africa.
Chauke, also known as 'The Voice of Awakening', aims to be a beacon of hope and transformation, and said that these awards mark yet another milestone in his mission to inspire, equip, and empower youth to walk boldly in purpose.

Local organisation blesses residents with massive outreach
Over 200 residents of Phomolong in Mamelodi East received donations of clothes, shoes and a soup kitchen was provided by Soil of Africa, through its charity drive on Friday. Bongani Ramontja from Soil of Africa said the charity drive is reaching out to disadvantaged and marginalised households within the Mamelodi community. Ramontja said the aim was not only to provide immediate relief, but also to identify families in need for ongoing monthly support, as part of their mission to close the gap of poverty in their community. The residents received vital support, which included fresh bread and hot soup, five items of clothing per person, and shoes for those in need. 'This initiative is part of Soil of Africa's unwavering commitment to giving back to our people and restoring dignity and pride to the lives of those who have long been forgotten and neglected. 'The charity drive marks the beginning of our nationwide tour programme, where Soil of Africa will roll out similar charity drives in disadvantaged areas across all provinces,' said Ramontja. Community members donated clothes to the organisation, and members of the organisation donated money to buy food and clothes. Soil of Africa civic organisation is an advocacy and grassroots movement founded in April 2025, that responds to social issues affecting marginalised and voiceless communities across South Africa. The organisation has become one of the fastest-growing movements in the country, with a presence in six provinces and a growing impact on the lives of citizens. Ramontja closed by saying, 'Our charity drive campaign will continue to move from township to township, ensuring that no vulnerable citizen is left behind as we restore dignity, hope, and pride in our communities.' Locals rally behind learners
An organisation in the west of Pretoria aims to provide comfort for learners in local schools. The Charity Meets Adventure NPO hosted a charity outreach programme at Transoranje sports ground on August 2. According to spokesperson Nakedi Mokgawa, the idea was to raise awareness for school kids who can't afford essential supplies. 'We wanted to make a change in disadvantaged learners' lives and bring back their dignity,' he said. He highlighted that the organisation aimed to collect vital necessities that would be distributed to needy schools. WATCH: 'Our aim was to collect perishable and non-perishable products which we will give back to our local schools,' he said. More than 500 basic essential products, including sanitary pads, school shoes, socks, and toiletries, were donated. Mokgawa said the event was about showing disadvantaged school children that their community cares about their well-being and future. 'These contributions will make a difference in the lives of many learners who often face the challenge of not going to school because they do not have basic necessities,' he said. He emphasised that the collected items foster hope, good hygiene, and confidence. Community members came in their numbers to support the good cause. Donors expressed their satisfaction in contributing to the outreach programme. Pamla Manetje said, 'I know that the donation will go a long way and change somebody's life out there.' WATCH: She shared how fulfilling contributing was for her. 'It is always heart-warming to help out where you can. It feels really good to know that at least someone will have a smile on their face because of the little that I gave out,' she said. Another donor, Mologadi Kotlolo, shared what being part of a programme that changes lives meant to her. 'It is about giving back a bit of dignity. Every child deserves to feel comfortable and confident, especially at school. If my donation helps even one child feel that way, then I'm happy,' she said. She encouraged community members to support school children in any way possible. 'It's heartbreaking to think of a child missing school because they lack proper shoes or hygiene products,' she said. Metro rejects claims of neglect at Moot retirement home
The Tshwane metro has denied claims that a local retirement facility under its housing entity in the Moot is not being properly maintained. The facility which houses the elderly is under the management of the Housing Company Tshwane (HCT). According to Ward 52 councillor, Adriana Randall, who recently raised the alarm regarding the Oos-Moot Retirement Village, said the facility is unserviced and facing maintenance issues. 'The current state of maintenance of the Oos-Moot Village is worrying,' she said. She said vulnerable and elderly people housed at the facility are affected by poor maintenance. She explained that some of the maintenance issues include rusty pipes, a broken motor gate and no working lights. 'The rust has caused several water leaks that have been reported on the reporting system.' She said the broken motor gate is threatening the security of the elderly, as are the outside lights. 'The motorised gate needs to be urgently repaired. You cannot expect elderly people to manually open a huge gate like that. 'I drove there the other night, and the place was in darkness. Maintenance of electrical infrastructure is needed. 'They do not have the financial means to do maintenance themselves,' she said. The metro has however pushed back against these claims. Spokesperson, Selby Bokaba, confirmed that the facility is under the management of the HCT and was transferred to HCT after a report tpresented at Council in 2015. 'The report was adopted by the majority of councillors for implementation. The city cannot have opposing concerns to resolutions passed by its own council.' He added that the HCT is audited by the Auditor-General of South Africa on an annual basis, and no audit queries were raised with regard to financial mismanagement or any troubled past. 'We also have a fully-fledged board that plays an oversight role to ensure ethical governance of the entity,' he said. Bokaba further said the claims of neglect at the retirement village are unfounded. 'The property is not neglected and it is maintained as and when there is a need.' He said the metro is determined to ensure the facility is properly kept, especially because it houses vulnerable elderly residents. 'There is a live-in caretaker stationed at the premises, who is responsible for overseeing the maintenance and cleanliness of the building. There is also 24-hour security at the premises. 'Given the budget constraints experienced by the city and the rental amount paid by the tenants, there is no budget allocated for upgrades.' He confirmed that a budget of R267 000 was allocated to the retirement village for the 2025/26 financial year, but that this only covers reactive maintenance.
