Speaker Berri briefed on Washington talks: MP Kanaan discusses IMF, US officials, and path forward on Lebanese reforms
The meeting also covered key legislative reform files currently on the committee's agenda, as well as upcoming priorities.
Speaking after the meeting, Kanaan said: 'I updated Speaker Berri on the details of my visit to Washington and my participation in the IMF and World Bank spring meetings, along with my discussions with U.S. administration officials.'
He added that there was significant interest in Lebanon, particularly in the country's recent financial, military, and reform-related developments. U.S. officials stressed the importance of fully implementing U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701 and reinforcing the capabilities of the Lebanese Army to preserve internal stability.
Kanaan emphasized that with regard to financial reforms, efforts are underway to rebuild trust—not only by passing the necessary legislation, but by ensuring its implementation.
This includes advancing financial audits, clarifying responsibilities, and addressing the recovery of depositors' funds, which have been frozen in Lebanese banks for over five years.

Tense session: Lebanese Parliament passes key loan agreements and military grants

Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri opened the session at 11:50 a.m. with only 63 lawmakers present, falling short of the required threshold for voting. It took an additional 15 minutes and direct calls from Berri's aides to MPs before the necessary quorum was secured. The main blocs boycotting the session included members of the Lebanese Forces, the Kataeb Party, parts of the Change and Renewal Blocs, segments of the Moderation Bloc, and several independent MPs. Despite the political divisions, Parliament proceeded to approve several critical measures. Following Monday's approval of a $250 million World Bank loan to support Lebanon's struggling energy sector, lawmakers on Tuesday ratified a second World Bank loan agreement worth $200 million aimed at economic recovery. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam received at the Grand Serail, a delegation from the Beirut Municipal Council, headed by its Chairman Ibrahim Zeidan. The meeting addressed the most prominent challenges facing the city of Beirut in terms of development and services, in light of the current economic and social circumstances. A number of proposals and demands related to improving the performance of public facilities, in general, and strengthening municipal work were also presented. During the meeting, Premier Salam emphasized the "need to support local authorities to enable them to perform their duties as required." After the meeting, Zeidan said the municipal council delegation discussed with Premier Salam the topics and services related to the city of Beirut, and briefed him on their work program in terms of urgent and long term projects. Premier Salam later received a delegation from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), headed by Force Commander General Diodato Abagnara. During the meeting, the discussion touched on the situation on the ground in south Lebanon, the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, and the ongoing cooperation between UNIFIL and the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), particularly with regard to intensifying coordination and joint operations.
