Vanguard, BlackRock deliver second-half market plays that could cushion a potential growth slowdown

CNBC6 days ago
Investors may want to consider bracing for a weaker stock market performance over the next six months.
According to Vanguard's Roger Hallam, it's prudent for long-term investors to have sufficient exposure to fixed income in this environment.
"Our outlook for the second half of this year is that growth will slow," the firm's global head of rates told CNBC's "ETF Edge" on Monday.
Hallam predicts the labor market will continue to gradually cool while inflation rises. Hallam expects the Federal Reserve will ultimately prioritize jobs and cut interest rates toward the end of this year to provide insurance.
"We think that will provide a tailwind for bonds," he said. "So, we're confident in the outlook for fixed income, and we think... clients should be allocating to fixed income."
Vanguard is behind three U.S. government bond exchange-traded funds debuting this week. The launch includes the Vanguard Government Securities Active ETF (VGVT).
The firm's prospectus shows U.S. Treasurys hold the largest exposure in the new ETF. The benchmark 10-year Treasury note yield started 2025 at about 4.57% and has since fallen to roughly 4.4% as of Tuesday.
Meanwhile, BlackRock's Jay Jacobs sees a barbell approach as a valuable second-half strategy as a hedge against economic slowdown risks.
"I think we're still going to see a lot of money that's been in cash for a long time … start to inch their way back into the equity markets," the firm's U.S. head of equity ETFs said in the same interview.
He expects buffer ETFs, which are designed to protect against the downside and still give a measure of upside performance, to benefit from the risk backdrop.
BlackRock offers six buffer ETFs, according to the firm's website, including iShares Large Cap Max Buffer Jun ETF (MAXJ). The fund is up 5% so far this year and tracks the share price return of the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF.
"Our fund MAXJ recently reset, giving a cap of up to 7% exposure to the S&P over the next year. A tool like that is going to be very much in vogue for investors looking to get back into the markets," Jacobs said, adding investors will likely play offense and will continue to migrate toward strong macro themes such as artificial intelligence.
Jacobs also lists infrastructure as a key group.
"As we continue to see geopolitics and fragmentation around the world impact markets, I think people are going to be looking at really powerful macro trends like the growth of infrastructure in the United States as a way to place their bets in the equity markets," Jacobs said.

CNBC Exclusive: Excerpts: BlackRock Chairman & CEO Larry Fink Speaks with CNBC's Brian Sullivan on 'Money Movers' Today

WHEN: Today, Tuesday, July 15, 2025 WHERE: CNBC's "Money Movers" Following are excerpts from the unofficial transcript of a CNBC exclusive interview with BlackRock Chairman & CEO Larry Fink on CNBC's "Money Movers" (M-F, 11AM-12PM ET) today, Tuesday, July 15. Following is a link to video on All references must be sourced to CNBC. FINK ON INFRASTRUCTURE AT THE BEGINNING OF A GOLDEN AGE LARRY FINK: We believe infrastructure is just at the beginning of a golden age. And I'll get into that. We believe private credit will continue to grow and evolve. We did HBS BRIAN SULLIVAN: That's HBS. FINK: But also we believe that if you're going to be, if you believe there's going to be a melding between public and private markets, which we believe that's going to happen. FINK ON INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENT FINK: We believe that there's a need for trillions of dollars investing in infrastructure related to our power grids, AI, the whole digitization of an economy. We are still going to be investing in decarbonization. So all these different investments. SULLIVAN: They go together, don't they? FINK: They all go together. Plus making sure that we have adequate, you know, dispatchable energy. So all of this is all part of a plan. And we only had one target when we determined we needed to get even larger in infrastructure. And that was GIP. FINK ON PUBLIC AND PRIVATE INVESTING FINK: We're going to have to do more and more public and private investing. I do believe deficits have consequences. And I've been discussing with this administration and many other governments that we need growth to reduce the dependency of our deficits. If we don't have economic growth around 3%, our deficits, our federal deficits are going to overwhelm the economy in the future. So the only way to get out of it is growth. FINK ON PRIVATE CAPITAL FINK: I think there's enough private capital to put the put the money to work working with state and local governments, working with the hyperscalers. And we need to make sure we do this because the US has to win and lead in AI and infrastructure. It is imperative. And so, you know, we need to find these solutions and we need to rapidly find the solutions. The money is there. The opportunity is there. BlackRock is going to be integral in this process.

"The hard-to-believe 'Great Paradox' in the stock market is: What seems too high and risky to the majority usually goes higher eventually, and what seems low and cheap usually goes lower."~William J. O'Neil Bitcoin was once called a "gambling token" and "rat poison squared" by legendary investor Warren Buffett, arguably the best investor of his time. However, by now, it has become impossible for Wall Street to deny the once obscure and first-of-its-kind cryptocurrency. A decade ago, Bitcoin traded at $286. Today, Bitcoin hit another all-time high of $123,000, marking a 430x increase over the past ten years and accruing an eye-popping 83% annualized return, far surpassing the next best asset class. Now, Bitcoin is one of the largest asset classes in the world. Below are five reasons the momentum is likely to continue into 2026, including: 1. Bitcoin: Digital Gold What differentiates Bitcoin from fiat currency and any other cryptocurrency is its scarcity and role as a store of value. Unlike fiat currency, which can be printed by central bankers out of thin air, there will only ever be 21 million Bitcoins in existence. Why is this important? As global central banks around the world print trillions of dollars and borrow money, fiat currencies like the dollar continue to lose value. As a result, investors gravitate towards Bitcoin and metals to fight this phenomenon. With the US passing another massive spending bill recently, there is no end in sight to this troubling trend in fiat. 2. Bitcoin ETFs Provide Wider Access Until recently, investors who wanted to buy Bitcoin had to have a separate crypto account through an exchange like Coinbase Global or Galaxy Digital. However, early last year, theUS Securities and Exchange Commission finally approved Bitcoin ETFs, allowing far more access to a larger group of investors. The launch of Bitcoin ETFs like BlackRock's, iShares Bitcoin ETF underscores the success. IBIT was the most successful ETF launch in history and is already the 20th largest ETF in the United States. In addition to the ETF approvals, traditional stock brokers like Robinhood and Interactive Brokers now offer a suite of crypto trading products. 3. Bitcoin Week Looms This week has been dubbed 'Crypto Week' by the Republicans. DC is slated to vote on the 'GENIUS Act,' which will provide a regulatory framework around stablecoins like Circle Group's USDC token. 'The CLARITY Act' will also aim to establish a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets. Crypto companies have had to deal with regulatory ambiguity from regulators for years. With a clear regulatory framework, more institutional investors are likely to flock to the digital asset industry. 4. Lack of Hype Around Bitcoin Though Bitcoin continues to print fresh all-time highs, you wouldn't know it by looking at Bitcoin interest on Alphabet's 'Google Trends.' Interest is at multi-year lows, presenting investors with a contrarian opportunity. 5. Bitcoin Fibs Suggest $150k Price Target Market technicians use Fibonacci levels as a tool to identify potential price targets. The Bitcoin fibs suggest that a price target of $150k by early 2026 is realistic. As market technicians now eye a $150k price target, Bitcoin's ongoing momentum suggests that its remarkable growth story is far from over, reminding investors that true opportunity often lies where the majority hesitates. Bloomberg News reported that the U.S. Commerce Department has launched Section 232 investigations into imports of drones and polysilicon, which is used on solar panels. Newmont — The mining stock dropped 8% after Newmont disclosed CFO Karyn Ovelmen had left the company. JPMorgan Chase — Shares fell less than 1% even after the bank posted second-quarter earnings that beat analyst expectations. Investment banking and trading revenue drove the stronger-than-expected numbers. Wells Fargo — Shares were down 5% after the company lowered its 2025 net income guidance to roughly in line with 2024 levels. The bank previously expected an increase of 1% to 3%. The forecast reduction overshadowed better-than-expected second-quarter profits. Citigroup — Shares added 3% after the bank posted second-quarter results that exceeded analyst expectations. CoreWeave — The AI cloud computing firm rose more than 8% after it committed to spending $6 billion on a new artificial intelligence data center in Pennsylvania. State Street — Shares slipped 4% after the bank reported second-quarter net interest income of $729 million, while FactSet analysts had estimated $733.2 million. This shortfall overshadowed its second-quarter beat. Nvidia — Shares jumped 4% after the graphics processing unit manufacturer announced it will "soon" resume sales of its H20 AI chip to China upon receiving licenses from the U.S. government. The Trump administration had previously told the company in April that it would require a license to sell the chips in China, effectively halting sales. Fellow semiconductor chip stocks Advanced Micro Devices , Broadcom and Micron Technology respectively rose 6%, 2% and 1%. Trade Desk — Shares surged 9% after S & P Global announced that the digital advertising company is set to join the S & P 500 as of Friday. It will replace software maker Ansys, which will be acquired in a $35 billion deal by Synopsys. Shares of AppLovin and Robinhood Markets both shed around 1% upon being left out of the index once again.
