Trump lifts sanctions on Syria to create ‘new relationship', normalise ties with Israel

The Trump administration dismantled sanctions targeting Syria. Israel is interested in normalising ties with Syria. Syria celebrated the US position. US President Donald Trump on Monday formally dismantled US sanctions against Syria, hoping to reintegrate the war-battered country into the global economy as Israel eyes ties with its new leadership. Trump lifted most sanctions against Syria in May, responding to appeals from Saudi Arabia and Turkey after former Islamist guerrilla Ahmed al-Sharaa ended a half-century of rule by the Assad family. In an executive order, Trump terminated the 'national emergency' in place since 2004 that imposed far-reaching sanctions on Syria, affecting most state-run institutions including the central bank. 'These actions reflect the president's vision of fostering a new relationship between the United States and a Syria that is stable, unified and at peace with itself and its neighbours,' Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement. READ | 'It was a mafia': Details emerge on how Bashar al-Assad family sucked Syria dry Rubio said he would start the potentially lengthy process of examining whether to delist Syria as a state sponsor of terrorism, a designation dating from 1979 that has severely discouraged investment. He also said he would look at removing the terrorist classification of Sharaa and his movement Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which was once linked to al-Qaeda. The US already removed a bounty on Sharaa's head after he came to power. Brad Smith, the Treasury Department official in charge of sanctions, said the new actions 'will end the country's isolation from the international financial system'. Syria recently carried out its first electronic transfer through the international banking system since around the time it descended into a brutal civil war in 2011. The orders still maintain sanctions on elements of the former government, including Bashar al-Assad, who fled to Russia late in 2024. Syrian Foreign Minister Assaad al-Shibani hailed the US move as a 'major turning point'. 'With the lifting of this major obstacle to economic recovery, the long-awaited doors are opening for reconstruction and development' as are the conditions 'for the dignified return of displaced Syrians to their homeland', he wrote on X. Israel kept pounding military sites in its historic adversary after the fall of Assad and initially voiced scepticism over the trajectory of its neighbour under Sharaa, who has swapped jihadist attire for a business suit. But Israel said earlier on Monday that it was interested in normalising ties with Syria as well as Lebanon in an expansion of the so-called 'Abraham Accords', in what would mark a major transformation of the Middle East. Iran's clerical state's once-strong influence in Syria and Lebanon has declined sharply under pressure from Israeli military strikes since the 7 October 2023 attacks by Hamas. Trump administration officials argued that lifting the sanctions on Syria would better integrate the country into the region and incentivise it to open up to Israel. Omar Zaghloul/Anadolu via Getty Images Israel's intensive attacks on Iran in June opened a 'window that has never existed', said Tom Barrack, the US ambassador to Turkey who serves as Trump's point man on Syria. 'It's an opportunity that we have never, ever seen, and this president's put together a team that can actually get it done,' Barrack told reporters. Despite his upbeat picture of the new Syrian leader, the country has seen a series of major attacks against minorities since the fall of Assad, a largely secular leader from the Alawite minority sect. At least 25 people were killed and dozens more wounded in a suspected Islamist attack against a Greek Orthodox church in Damascus on 22 June. Until Trump's surprise announcement of sanctions relief during a trip to Saudi Arabia, the US had insisted on progress first in key areas including protection of minorities.

Rupee gains alongside Asian peers as US policy worries trouble dollar

By Jaspreet Kalra MUMBAI (Reuters) - The Indian rupee strengthened on Tuesday, alongside most Asian peers, as worries over U.S. President Donald Trump's fiscal policies and uncertainty around trade deals kept the dollar pinned at a more than three-year low against major peers. The rupee closed at 85.52 per U.S. dollar, up about 0.3% on the day. While the rupee strengthened on the day, it was unable to hold onto gains above the 85.50 mark, with traders pointing to bids from a large state-run bank and a few local private banks. The currency is likely to stay rangebound in the near term unless it convincingly breaches either 85.45-85.50 on the upside or 86 on the downside, a trader at a private bank said. Asian currencies were mostly up between 0.1% and 0.4%, while the dollar index declined 0.3% to 96.37, its lowest level since February 2022. Worries about U.S. fiscal policies, uncertainty over trade deals ahead of a looming deadline and concerns over the future independence of the Federal Reserve have all hurt the dollar this year. The dollar index is nursing losses of 11% on the year so far. "The dented safe-haven status of the U.S. amid demanding asset price valuations portends a redistribution of global portfolio flows across various regions. Asia can both drive and benefit from this redistribution," ANZ said in a Tuesday note. While countries with sizeable external investment surpluses, such as Taiwan and South Korea, will lead the diversification from U.S. assets, potential inflows will also extend more broadly to economies like India and Indonesia, the note added. With investors also ramping up wagers on faster rate cuts by the Fed this year, the focus will turn to U.S. economic data due later in the day. Remarks from Fed Chair Jerome Powell will also be in the spotlight for cues on the future path of policy rates. Ola Electric's Market Share Shrinks Sharply in Q1 FY26

Meanwhile, legacy manufacturers have surged ahead. TVS Motor topped the electric two-wheeler chart in Q1 with 68,682 units sold, while Bajaj Auto followed closely with 62,629 units. You're reading Entrepreneur India, an international franchise of Entrepreneur Media. Ola Electric Mobility Ltd has kicked off FY26 on a weak footing, with its electric two-wheeler sales tumbling by 47 per cent year-on-year to 57,000 units in the April–June quarter. The Bhavish Aggarwal-led company, once the undisputed leader in the segment, has seen its market share fall to 20 per cent from nearly 50 per cent a year ago, according to data from the government's Vahan portal, Mint reported. Meanwhile, legacy manufacturers have surged ahead. TVS Motor topped the electric two-wheeler chart in Q1 with 68,682 units sold, while Bajaj Auto followed closely with 62,629 units. Ather Energy, now a publicly listed firm, more than doubled its sales to nearly 40,000 units. The overall electric two-wheeler (E2W) market expanded 31 per cent in Q1 to 291,294 units. TVS held 24 per cent of the market, Bajaj 22 per cent, and Ather 14 per cent. By comparison, Ola had ended FY25 with a 30 per cent market share, while TVS, Bajaj, and Ather held 21 per cent, 20 per cent, and 11 per cent respectively. The reversal in fortunes signals deeper trouble for Ola, which is also grappling with mounting financial pressure. Its net loss widened to INR 2,276 crore in FY25 from INR 1,584 crore the previous year, as revenue slipped to INR 4,514 crore from INR 5,010 crore. Credit rating agency Icra downgraded debt worth INR 1,887 crore of Ola Electric Technologies Pvt Ltd, citing "a longer-than-expected period of cash burn." "The downgrade of ratings and continuation of the Negative outlook are due to slower-than-expected scale-up in OET's electric two-wheeler sales volumes," Icra said in a note dated May 1, said Mint. Ola has attributed part of the Q1 disruption to delays in vehicle registration, caused by renegotiations with registration agencies earlier this year. The company moved the entire process in-house, but the backlog from February and March spilled over into the new fiscal. Despite expanding its retail footprint from 800 to over 4,000 outlets under Project Vistaar, Ola has not been able to stop the erosion in its market position. Aggarwal acknowledged the company's struggles during its May 29 earnings call. "In the last quarter or two, we have lost market share… But industry is today at a state where roughly the top three players are equal," he said, adding that future growth would depend on product innovation and better balance between profitability and scale. Hero MotoCorp, which sold around 4,000 units monthly in FY25, is now aiming for 25,000–30,000 monthly sales within two years. The legacy auto giants are consolidating their lead and Ola's early dominance is slipping fast.
