A gritty Pac-Man reboot makes for surprisingly solid Metroid-style action

The Verge17-07-2025
Shadow Labyrinth didn't make the best first impression, though I'm not talking about the game itself. The concept of a gritty reboot of Pac-Man first reared its strange head in Secret Level, an anthology that turned notable video games into animated shorts that mostly felt like extended commercials. And that's exactly what the episode 'Circle,' which reimagined Pac-Man as a blood-soaked survival story, turned out to be. But as off-putting as the episode was, it turns out that the premise actually works for a Metroid-style action game.
For those who didn't watch Secret Level, Shadow Labyrinth puts you in the role of an unnamed, hooded swordmaster, who awakens to find himself inside some sort of dark alien labyrinth. He's greeted by a floating drone named Puck, who serves as both a guide and a partner to survive in this treacherous world. Puck, of course, is Pac-Man.
For the most part, the game plays a lot like a typical Metroidvania. It's a side-scrolling game that's heavy on action, like Metroid Dread, and as you defeat bosses and collect gold, you'll slowly expand your arsenal of skills, which opens up the game further. The twisting, maze-like map is full of dead ends that you can't explore until you get the right ability, which include staples like a double jump and grappling hook. You can also craft various upgrades, both permanent and temporary, so you can customize the character to your liking. It's a satisfying loop of exploration, combat, and problem-solving (usually involving some kind of platforming sequence), punctuated by tense, elaborate boss fights that depend a lot on pattern memorization.
I could be describing a lot of other games here, but there are a few elements that make Shadow Labyrinth unique. And it mostly has to do with Puck. Scattered throughout the labyrinth are rails that Puck can ride on, sort of like Pac-Man moving his way through a classic arcade maze. It's reminiscent of Samus' morph ball ability, except it's relegated to predetermined areas of the map. Later on, there are actual Pac-Man mazes to play through, too, complete with pellets and ghosts to eat.
The game is at its best when you're quickly swapping between Puck and the swordmaster, either to navigate a tricky platforming sequence or defeat enemies. In one early boss battle, I was able to use a rail on the ceiling to avoid projectiles, and then drop behind the enemy for some quick sneak attacks. Early on, Puck and the swordmaster gain the ability to temporarily fuse together to create a power-up that's sort of like a mech suit, which you can use to devastate most enemies and even avoid environmental hazards. Oh, and when you're a mech, you can eat your enemies to gain materials needed for those important unlocks.
One of the nice things about Shadow Labyrinth is that, unlike the animated short that preceded it, it doesn't overdo it with the grim tone. It can get a little bloody when you're slicing through creatures, but it's not gratuitous. In fact, much like Dread, the oppressive tone creates an interesting kind of tension, one that makes the rare moments of respite feel especially welcome. That said, the cutscenes are self-serious and convoluted, and there are silly moments where Puck becomes giant and eats the corpses of bosses, but these are mostly easy to ignore if all you want to do is explore a complex map, Metroid-style.
That's really what the game offers. The combat is solid, the platforming is challenging, and the bosses are exciting. And thankfully, the tone mostly doesn't intrude on the experience, while the Pac-Man theme brings just enough new to add an interesting twist for those well-versed in Metroidvanias. Secret Level may have been a commercial, but it was a pretty poor one: it missed what actually makes Shadow Labyrinth worth playing.
Shadow Labyrinth launches on July 18th on the PS5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Here's The New ‘Five Nights At Freddy's 2' Trailer And Its Release Date

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 Five Nights at Freddy's was an underestimated video game adaptation, where the traditional Hollywood class did not seem to understand its massive appeal among Gen Z. The first film performed so well a sequel was auto-greenlit, and now we have our first trailer for Five Nights at Freddy's 2, which you can see below: The trailer has already gotten a million views in its first three hours with a wild 166,000 to 750 like-to-dislike ratio. That's reflected in my entire gaming timeline being filled with fans combing through every second of the trailer and overwhelmingly getting hyped about the various bits and pieces they've found from the games, praising how they're apparently being adapted. It cannot be overstated just how big of a gaming/horror success the original Five Nights at Freddy's was. The film made $291 million worldwide on a $20 million budget, a 14x multiplier and an industry smash hit. And like many horror properties, the places the game has gone means that there are likely unlimited paths toward future sequels. If they can get these movies out every two years, which seems possible, that's printing money. Five Nights 1 was out in October 2023, while Five Nights at Freddy's 2's release date is December 5, 2025, just over two years later. Even if the second film performs worse than the first, the amount it will make compared to the low budget it may now have should still be wildly profitable. You can make less money and increase costs a bit and this would still be considered a huge hit. Compare this to one of the best horror movies of 2025, Companion, which made a whopping $36 million worldwide. Heart Eyes, also this year, made $33 million. Bring Her Back made $22 million. The only horror movie rocketing out of this class is Sinners with $365 million and I mean, that's not even that much more than the original Five Nights was. Movie or Minecraft, huge, huge earners. It's just not the same thing with that kind of budget and honestly, a more passionate fanbase than either of those who will turn out to ensure this movie makes money, even if it's a few hundred million less than those others. If you want to read the absurdly long, just-released synopsis for Five Nights at Freddy's 2, you can read that below: --- "They're not just at Freddy's anymore. In 2023, Blumhouse's box-office horror phenomenon Five Nights at Freddy's, based on the blockbuster game series by Scott Cawthon, became the highest-grossing horror film of the year. Now, a shocking new chapter of animatronic terror begins. One year has passed since the supernatural nightmare at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. The stories about what transpired there have been twisted into a campy local legend, inspiring the town's first ever Fazfest. Former security guard Mike (Josh Hutcherson) and police officer Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail) have kept the truth from Mike's 11-year-old sister, Abby (Piper Rubio), concerning the fate of her animatronic friends. But when Abby sneaks out to reconnect with Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy, it will set into motion a terrifying series of events, revealing dark secrets about the true origin of Freddy's, and unleashing a long-forgotten horror hidden away for decades. The cast of Five Nights at Freddy's 2 includes returning co-stars Theodus Crane as Jeremiah and the legendary Matthew Lillard as William Afton. The film features new characters played by Freddy Carter (Shadow and Bone, Pennyworth), Wayne Knight (Jurassic Park, Seinfeld), Mckenna Grace (Ghostbusters franchise, Annabelle Comes Home) and horror icon Skeet Ulrich (Scream, Riverdale). Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is directed by acclaimed returning filmmaker Emma Tammi and is written by game series creator Scott Cawthon." Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram. Legrests are a thing, and you can find them far cheaper than this, but 'You really just want a second tiltable butt cushion, trust us!' is a vibe I haven't seen before. It's called the Otto, has height and tilt adjust (down to 30 degrees), and is filled with memory foam. Blue Protocol: Star Resonance English Closed Beta Signups Now Open

Blue Protocol: Star Resonance Starting today, players can finally start signing up for the Blue Protocol: Star Resonance English closed beta test (CBT). The closed beta test application period will last from today until August 14 and the actual testing period will run from August 15 until August 20. Applications are open for players in North America, Europe, and South America. The game is slated for a global free-to-play launch this year across both PC and mobile. Since this is a closed beta test, that means there will be a cap on how many players are allowed entry and all characters and progress will be wiped after the testing period. According to a press release I received, slots for the testing period will be 'randomly allocated based on survey responses.' However, interestingly, players will be able to make in-game purchases during the testing period, but there are no details on what will be available for purchase. The nice thing is that anything you spend during the CBT, will be noted and converted into in-game currency when the game officially launches at a rebate rate. I've never seen a process like that before, but it's an interesting idea. You can find more details on that here. Blue Protocol: Star Resonance CBT We don't have any details on how much of the game will be available during the CBT period, but giving players almost an entire week with the game is promising. Hopefully that means more than just an introductory area to mess around in. I'm planning to sign up and check it out for myself so I can report back with impressions next month. I originally wrote about Blue Protocol several years ago when it was unveiled the first time and have been curious about the game ever since. Hopefully this new re-launch has a brighter future than the previous incarnation under its new publisher. Since then, the anime-style MMO-like subgenre is definitely quite a bit more popular. Between games like Genshin Impact, Honkai Star Rail, and Tower of Fantasy—just to name a few—there is absolutely an audience out there. If you're interested in signing up for a chance to check out the English Closed Beta Test for Blue Protocol: Star Resonance, you can fill out the form here and check the game's official website and Steam page for more details.
