Iain Aspenlieder, 46, has been charged with mischief to a war monument, mischief exceeding $5,000 and harassment by threatening conduct in relation to the incident.

He will remain in custody until his next court date, which is scheduled for July 9, according to Justice of the Peace Stephen Dibblee, who rendered the decision.

This comes after the City of Ottawa confirmed that Aspenlieder had been fired from his job as a lawyer last Sunday. According to the Ontario Sunshine List, Aspenlieder was making $146,000 a year.

'The recent act affecting the National Holocaust monument was deplorable and is counter to the values we seek to uphold in our community. We extend our deepest sympathies to members of our community impacted by this disgraceful act,' Huxley wrote.

'The City can confirm that the individual implicated in this act was on leave at the time of the incident and is no longer employed by the City. As the matter is the subject of a police investigation and is before the courts, the City will provide no further comment.'

Pair arrested after vehicle window shot out in southwest Edmonton

The officers chased them on Anthony Henday Drive to the Cameron Heights neighbourhood, where the suspects crashed, fled on foot into the nearby ravine and were arrested, police said. Charges are pending. CTV News Edmonton has asked Edmonton police for the genders and ages of the people arrested.

Police investigating shooting near park in Langley, B.C.

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Darryl Dyck Police are investigating a series of shots that were reportedly fired near a park in Langley, B.C., Monday evening. According to a release issued by Langley RCMP, Mounties were called to a report of shots being fired around Willoughby Way and 200 Street, near Meadows Edge Park, at around 5:32 p.m. Attending officers 'located evidence consistent with a shooting,' and a 48-year-old man was taken to hospital for 'further assessment,' police said. Sgt. Zynal Sharoom said the investigation is still in its early stages and a motive behind the incident is still to be determined. Anyone with any relevant information, including dash cam video taken in the area between 5:15 p.m. and 5:45 p.m., is asked to contact the Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200 and quote file number 25-21567. Motorists are advised to expect road closures and delays in the area.
