Florida Teacher Who Sexually Assaulted a Student, Made Suicide Pact with Victim and Helped Her Buy Rope to Hang Herself

SouthTech Academy teacher Damian Conti accused of having sex with a teen student is facing additional charged after investigators found he also made a suicide pact with the 16-year-old girl and helped her pick out a rope to hang herself.
As reported by The Palm Beach Post, Palm Beach County sheriff's deputies found the teenager hanging from a tree behind a church less than an hour later. Fortunately, deputies cut the rope and resuscitated her before rushing her to the St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, where she later recovered.
Conti Accompanied the Student to Hardware Store, Helped Her Pick Out Rope, Chain to Commit Suicide
Conti, 36, who was originally charged with several counts of unlawful sexual activity with a child, now faces an additional count of attempting to assist in self-murder. Prosecutors added the charge on April 16. Conti has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
Conti was seen accompanying the student to a Home Depot near Lake Worth Beach as she picked out 30 feet of rope and 15 feet of chain. She told an employee she was building a tree house. She told Conti it was for the both of them to commit suicide.
Hours later, the girl was in the emergency room. Intubated and comatose, she appeared in such grave condition that a deputy said her mother nearly fainted when she saw her.
Conti Groomed the Teen, Then Sexually Assaulted Her in Parking Lots, Classroom and In-Storage Closets on Campus
According to investigators, Conti began communicating with the student over school email, text and Instagram in August 2023. He then started meeting the after school hours near her locker, gave her driving lessons, visited her at work and even offered to be her academic mentor.
He gave her gifts and encouraged her to join the volleyball club he coached. Not long after, investigators say he had begun creating excuses to remove her from volleyball practice and take her into his classroom alone.
The student said he confided in her about his work and home life and encouraged her to vent her own frustrations. The girl said Conti told her he "liked her" in October 2023. She said he then began to assault her sexually, first in a shopping plaza parking lot and then in his classroom and in storage closets on SouthTech's campus in Boynton Beach.
Both Conti and the girl told deputies that their last sexual encounter occurred on Feb. 5, 2024 — the same day as his wedding anniversary, according to the divorce paperwork his wife filed three weeks later.
Investigators Found Thousands of Explicit Messages Between Conti and the Student
In addition to his admission of performing sex acts on the girl, investigators uncovered thousands of messages between the teacher and student — many of which the lawyers said contained "highly inappropriate and/or explicit sexual content."
During a hearing in October, prosecutors offered the former teacher a chance to plead guilty in exchange for a 25-year prison sentence — a fraction of the penalty he'll face if he maintains his innocence and is convicted at trial. Conti rejected the offer. He rejected a 10-year offer before that one, too. His refusal put his case on track for a jury trial scheduled to begin June 23.

Hawaii Man Who Killed Wife's Acupuncturist After Finding Out About Their Affair, Sentenced

A Honolulu man has been sentenced to prison over the murder of his wife's acupuncturist with whom she was having an affair. Eric Thompson, 37, was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Oahu Circuit Court Judge Paul Wong handed down his judgment on Friday, June 27, over the 2022 shooting death of Waipahu acupuncturist Jon Tokuhara. During his sentence, Thompson must serve a minimum of 15 years, before he is eligible for parole, though the Hawaii Paroling Authority may set a longer term. On Feb. 25, a jury found Thompson guilty of murder in the second degree and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. As previously reported, Thompson fatally shot Tokuhara in his Waipahu acupuncture shop in Jan. 2022, after learning about his wife's affair with Tokuhara about six months before the murder. Thompson's DNA, Car Linked Him to the Murder On Jan. 12, Thompson allegedly walked into Tokuhara Acupuncture and Healthcare at around 6:15 p.m. Investigators said that security cameras showed that Thompson was inside the business for only around 45 seconds, according to the television newsroom. Thompson reportedly fired three shots from a .22-caliber gun during that brief interval, the report indicated. Tokuhara's mother found her son shot to death inside his acupuncture clinic on Jan. 12, 2022. Police reportedly used surveillance video to identify Thompson's truck and linked him to the murder scene. As Thompson made his way back to his car, he dropped his hat, which was later picked up by a homeless man. Police used surveillance video to identify that man and pull samples of hair and fibers from it, ultimately leading to Thompson as the possible killer. Thompson's Wife Had Messaged Tokuhara About Her Fears Over Her Husband Finding Out About Their Affair The police investigation into Tokuhara's death reportedly uncovered Instagram messages between the victim and Thompson's wife in which she expressed fear about Thompson discovering the relationship. It appeared that while Tokuhara may have wanted a long-term relationship, Thompson's wife did not want to leave her husband; in July 2021, she reportedly told Tokuhara that she had to end the relationship and he couldn't contact her anymore. Their last Instagram communication was on July 23, 2021. "As we showed in our case in chief, Thompson was a controlling and violent man who planned this murder because his wife had an affair with Jon," said Prosecuting Attorney Steve Alm. "Hopefully this sentence will provide the family and friends of Jon Tokuhara some closure," Alm said.

Six Israelis detained for attacking soldiers in West Bank: Military

PHOTO: AFP Six Israelis detained for attacking soldiers in West Bank: Military JERUSALEM - Six Israelis were detained for assaulting soldiers near a town in the occupied West Bank where clashes with Palestinians erupted earlier this week, the military said on June 28. Soldiers went to disperse a gathering of Israelis near the central West Bank town of Kafr Malik overnight from June 27 to June 28, the military said in a statement. 'Upon the arrival of the security forces, dozens of Israeli civilians hurled stones toward them and physically and verbally assaulted the soldiers, including the Battalion Commander,' it said. 'In addition, the civilians vandalised and damaged security forces' vehicles, and attempted to ram the security forces,' it added. 'The security forces dispersed the gathering, and six Israeli civilians were apprehended and transferred to the Israel Police for further processing.' Contacted by AFP, the Israeli military declined to say whether those arrested were residents of Israeli settlements in the territory, which has been occupied by Israel since 1967. The military referred the query to the Israeli police, which was not available to comment. In a separate incident on June 25, the Palestinian health ministry said three men died in Kafr Malik in an attack by settlers. AFP journalists saw several hundred people gather for the three men's funerals on June 26. The Palestinian foreign ministry alleged 'official complicity' by Israel in June 25's attack, in a message on X. 'Israeli occupation forces prevented ambulance crews from reaching the wounded and obstructed civil defense teams from entering the village for several hours, allowing fires ignited by the settlers to spread and destroy dozens of homes,' it said. The Israeli military did not respond to a request by AFP to comment on those claims. A military spokesman told AFP its forces intervened on June 25 after 'dozens of Israeli civilians set fire to property in Kafr Malik' and a 'confrontation' involving 'mutual rock-hurling' broke out between Israelis and Palestinians. Referring to action by the Palestinians, the spokesman said: 'Several terrorists fired from within Kafr Malik and hurled rocks at the forces, who opened fire toward the source of fire and the rock-hurlers.' Five Israelis were arrested, the military added. AFP Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
