Three Belgian Firms To Visit Lumut Maritime Industrial City In June

Barnama26-05-2025
BATU GAJAH, May 26 (Bernama) -- Three Belgian investment companies are scheduled to visit the Lumut Maritime Industrial City (LuMIC) this June, following the Perak government's official visit to Europe last week.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the companies are Belgian Scrap Terminal (BST), Soenen Group Green Vessel Recycling, and Steinberg Logistics International.
'BST specialises in separating recyclable materials and has expertise in dismantling and recycling old ships.
'Soenen focuses on sustainable ship disposal and refurbishment, while Steinberg offers integrated logistics services that support the maritime industry ecosystem,' he told a press conference after the State Government's Customer Engagement Day (Series 3/2025) here today.
Saarani added that French multinational company Saint-Gobain, which operates in the Kanthan Industrial Park, Chemor, has also expressed interest in expanding its operations.
He said the company plans to invest an additional RM200 million, and the Perak State Development Corporation (PKNP) has proposed relocating its operations to the Silver Valley Technology Park (SVTP).
'Saint-Gobain has visited SVTP to evaluate its suitability for the new investment,' he said.
On a separate matter, Saarani addressed public complaints about livestock roaming on roads, which pose safety risks to motorists. He urged farmers to use designated grazing areas to help resolve the issue.
'The presence of roaming animals not only disrupts farming activities but also endangers road users.

Padi floor price hike to RM1,500 brings relief to farmers

PARIT BUNTAR: A recent hike in Malaysia's padi floor price to RM1,500 is being seen as a critical step in sustaining the country's rice industry, as farmers grapple with mounting input costs and declining profits. Parit Abas farmer, Zulfahmi Akhyar, 35, said the RM200 increase has somewhat helped ease the rising costs of cultivating padi fields. "Previously, we were affected by the increase in diesel prices, not to mention the costs of seeds, pesticides, and other necessities. "Moreover, this season we did not receive the RM600 interim assistance while waiting for the padi to mature, as we had before. "So this additional RM200 helps ease the burden we've been carrying in managing our fields. "Many small-scale farmers like me can't bear the cost of living and farming at the same time. This move at least gives us some breathing room," he said. He added that he hopes the government will continue to listen to farmers and consider additional aid in the future, especially during the monsoon season, which greatly affects harvests. Last October, the government's decision to increase the padi purchase floor price to RM1,300 per tonne under the 2024 Budget, up from RM1,200, which had remained unchanged since 2014, brought relief to farmers struggling with the rising costs of rice farming. Another farmer, Mohd Naim Othman, 34, said that in his seven years of farming, this was the best news he had received. "Back in the early 2000s, the floor price was only RM1,200. The increase to RM1,300 gave farmers renewed motivation to continue working the fields. "Today's announcement by the prime minister truly brings new hope to farmers, as we had nearly given up due to the rising costs of farming. "Now, this eases our hardship a little and gives new spirit to us, the younger generation, to keep cultivating padi," he said. He added that the younger generation needs support from the government to remain in this sector, and such an increase shows that their hard work is being valued. "Support like this must continue, not just for profit, but for the sake of national food security," he said. Earlier today Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the minimum purchase price of padi has been increased to RM1,500 for this year, and the paddy price subsidy scheme rate has also been raised to RM500.

Dining at Culina Bistro KL, with fine wine from a famous estate

Culina Bistro Kuala Lumpur recently hosted a one-night-only wine pairing dinner featuring Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite. The historic estate is recognised as one of Bordeaux's First Growths, a distinction reserved for the region's top five wine producers. A pioneer in expanding beyond traditional French terroirs, the maison established its presence in Chile in 1988 and Argentina in 1999. Located at Shoppes at Four Seasons Place Kuala Lumpur, Culina Bistro is a modern eatery that is part of the Culina in KL group of outlets, which comprises a market, bakery, wine bar, and bistro. Culina Bistro is a modern eatery that is part of the Culina in KL group of outlets. The recent dinner was part of the Culina Series – a collection of curated culinary experiences and masterclasses – and was hosted by the maison's brand ambassador Pierre-Antoine Ballan, as well as Culina's associate director of wine business development, Mathias Camilleri. Before the dinner, I spoke to Camilleri about his pairing process, and he said that while wine pairings can be very subjective, for him, the most important component to consider in a pairing is the sauce. 'When I do a pairing, I will always ask the chef if I can try the sauce, because it is the bridge between the protein and your wine, and the essence of the dish,' he said. The Culina event was hosted by the maison's brand ambassador Pierre-Antoine Ballan (left) and Camilleri. 'So, when I do a pairing, I think, 'does the sauce is lack something? Is it too strong? Is it too rich?'' he explained. 'If so, as the sommelier, you can make a choice of wine that will bring it down a little. Or if there is an element in the sauce that is really important, you can choose a wine that will enhance it instead.' It was a principle that held true during the dinner, especially with the main dishes. At Culina, Camilleri daringly paired the Ocean Trout Acqua Pazza with the excellent Los Vascos Le Dix 2018 from Colchagua Valley, Chile. The first main was Ocean Trout Acqua Pazza, a savoury bowl of umami-filled flavours that Camilleri daringly paired with the excellent Los Vascos Le Dix 2018 from Colchagua Valley, Chile, a full supple red wine with notes of berries and plums, and a maritime saltiness in the background that really brought out that seafood goodness in the dish. ../../backup/files/images/thumbs/600/2025/07/23/ Another unique one was the second main – MiGyeongSan Hanwoo Striploin. This was paired with not one, but two Argentinian wines from Bodegas Caro – Caro 2019 and Petit Caro 2021, with each wine giving different flavour sensations and experiences when paired with the decadent Hanwoo beef. The second main at the Culina dinner was paired with not one, but two Argentinian wines from Bodegas Caro. At the start, we had a pair of canapes – Fried Sushi (nori-cured ocean trout, yuzu kyosho aioli, rice cake), and Beef Skewer (MiGyeongSan outside round, ponzu) accompanied by William Fèvre Chablis 2022. We then moved on to the William Fèvre Chablis 1er Cru Montmains 2017, which Camilleri wanted to pair with a dish that would enhance the sea compounds of the Chablis. Scallop Crudo Hence, it was served together with the appetiser, Scallop Crudo, which was full of seafood umami, and brought out the maritime influences of the wine's terroir. Desserts also took a dual savoury and sweet route - led by a Cheese Board of aged cheddar, brie, blue cheese, gouda, nuts, dried fruits, followed by Poached Plums (port, thyme, mascarpone). Both were paired with a Château Duhart Milon, Moulin de Duhart, Pauillac, Bordeaux, France 2020, which provided a sensual, satisfying end to the evening.

Macron and Merz to discuss NATO, US-EU trade in Berlin talks

BERLIN: French President Emmanuel Macron will hold talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin on Wednesday, focusing on NATO security, the US-EU trade dispute, and other pressing issues. The meeting comes as both leaders seek to strengthen Franco-German ties amid growing transatlantic tensions under US President Donald Trump. 'The most important message is: the Franco-German couple is back at work,' the French presidency said ahead of Macron's planned dinner with Merz. The two leaders aim to reinforce cooperation at the heart of the European Union, particularly as Trump's policies continue to strain relations between the US and Europe. Paris and Berlin have been key players in supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression and bolstering NATO's European defence capabilities. However, while France has hinted at deploying peacekeeping troops to monitor a potential ceasefire in Ukraine, Germany has not yet committed to such a move. Trade tensions with the US will also dominate discussions. Trump has threatened to impose 30% tariffs on EU goods if no agreement is reached by August 1. 'In the tariff dispute with the USA, we are now approaching the decisive phase,' Merz said Tuesday, calling for 'a fair and reliable agreement with low tariff rates' to stabilise transatlantic trade. Bilateral disagreements remain, particularly over a joint combat aircraft project involving Spain. Merz has resisted France taking a dominant role but remains optimistic about reaching a consensus. Meanwhile, Dassault CEO Eric Trappier has raised doubts about the project's feasibility, citing challenges in a three-nation leadership structure. Energy policy is another sticking point. France advocates for nuclear power as a climate-friendly solution, while Germany is phasing it out in favour of renewables. Macron seeks German support for EU-level recognition of nuclear energy, a stance Merz's centre-right coalition may be more open to than the previous government. The leaders will also address the long-delayed EU-Mercosur trade deal, with France cautious about its impact on agriculture. Sources suggest a compromise may include safeguards for the farming sector. Merz will host Macron at Villa Borsig, with a schedule including a jazz performance and a working dinner. - AFP
