At 100, Dr Mahathir says advisory role in PN better than PM

ALOR STAR: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has no intention of returning as prime minister for a third time, saying he would instead serve in an advisory role should Perikatan Nasional (PN) come to power.
Dr Mahathir said his age no longer allowed him to take on front-line leadership, but his decades of experience in politics could still serve the nation.
"I'm old now… a hundred years old. I can't give fiery speeches like I used to. I'm not here to take the place of the younger generation.
"I'm not looking to become prime minister again. But I do want to offer advice.
"I've been prime minister for 24 years and involved in politics for over 80 years," he told a crowd at the Himpunan Mandat Negarawanrally at Stadium Suka Menanti yesterday.
Also present were Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, PN deputy chairman Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, and Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.
Dr Mahathir said Malaysia was a resource-rich country and that poverty should not exist if national assets were managed prudently.
"This country is rich. Everyone should be wealthy. But if we don't know how to make full use of the assets we have, we will never progress," he said.
He added that a PN-led administration would make eradicating poverty a top priority, claiming the current government had failed to do so.
"As a government, our focus must be on resolving poverty. PN can do it. We can reduce poverty. That's our hope, that's the purpose of our gathering tonight."
Dr Mahathir said that, should PN take over Putrajaya, its leadership would be one that listened to advice.
"If there is a change in government, we will have a prime minister who is willing to listen to advice. I believe, if that happens, many issues can be resolved," he said.
The rally was described by PN leaders as a curtain-raiser for a larger gathering scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur on July 26, aimed at pressuring Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to step down.

Audit dept asked to be allowed to skip PAC meetings, says committee chief

PAC chairman Mas Ermieyati Samsudin said the national audit department is not the subject of an investigation, but acts as a source of technical information to help the committee better understand the audit findings. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Public Accounts Committee chairman Mas Ermieyati Samsudin says she has received a letter requesting that representatives from the national audit department be exempted from attending the committee's meetings. Mas Ermieyati said the letter was from Auditor-General Wan Suraya Wan Radzi and that she received it in March. 'It stated that representatives from the department should be excluded from attending PAC meetings held under Standing Order 77(1)(d). 'This move raises questions, as such a practice has never occurred under previous auditors-general,' the Perikatan Nasional Masjid Tanah MP said during the debate on the 2025 Auditor-General's Report Series 2 in the Dewan Rakyat today. She noted that in the context of PAC meetings or proceedings, the department was not the subject of an investigation. 'Instead, it acts as a source of technical information and a professional adviser to help the PAC better understand the audit findings. 'Their presence is not a conflict of interest but rather an institutional necessity to ensure the PAC functions effectively and with credibility. 'In fact, the department's role within the PAC is clear – to provide professional and independent opinions,' she said. Earlier, opposition chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan questioned the legality of Wan Suraya's appointment as auditor-general, claiming that her status as a serving civil servant breached the Federal Constitution and could create a conflict of interest. The 2025 Auditor-General's Report Series 2, tabled in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday, flagged issues such as RM460 million in government funds being spent on land deals, university tenders, and defence contracts between 2020 and 2024 without proper oversight. It also found that a public hospital in Cheras awarded a RM25.64 million catering contract to a company that did not possess halal certification from the Islamic development department. The army was also flagged for failing to collect RM162.75 million in penalties from a defence contractor that delivered armoured vehicles late.

'Petrol price reduction shows govt has kept its promise'

KOTA BARU: The reduction in petrol price will silence critics who previously accused the PH-led government of breaking its long-standing promise to lower the prices of fuel. Kelantan Pakatan Harapan women's chief Dr Hafidzah Mustakim said the announcement of a package to relieve the rising cost of living by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today reflected a serious and people-centric approach in delivering direct subsidies to those in need. "The prime minister has fulfilled his word. This shows the government listens and takes real action, not empty promises," she added. She also said the decision to double the allocation for Rahmah Sales from RM300 million to RM600 million was a clear demonstration of the Madani government's commitment to easing the people's burden, especially when essential items were becoming expensive. "This increase means more frequent Rahmah Sales, which are often referred to locally as 'Kedai Cari Rakyat'. Previously, each state constituency held four sales monthly. "With this boost, the programme can be carried out even more regularly, especially in rural areas where they are most needed," she said. Dr Hafidzah, who is Kota Lama assemblyman, described today's announcement as a milestone in government aid delivery, showcasing a deep concern for public well-being. "The RM100 one-off assistance for all Malaysians aged 18 and above also proves this government is fair and inclusive. No one is left behind," she said when met at her office.

Only the guilty need immunity, says Dr M on Batu Putih issue

PETALIING JAYA: Tun Mahathir Mohamad says he does not need legal immunity over the Batu Puteh issue. "Immunity is for people who are afraid to go to court because they know they are guilty. I know I am innocent and I want to prove it," the former prime minister said in a Facebook post on Wednesday (July 23). He said Parliament had "found him guilty" over his role in the Batu Puteh issue. "In the Dewan Rakyat yesterday (July 22), I was found guilty in the case of not making an appeal over Batu Putih," he said. "Even though I was found guilty, no action will be taken because of my age. "The one who found me guilty is Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. "He also said no action should be taken against me because I am 100 years old," he said. Anwar in Parliament on Tuesday had said although an inquiry had found Dr Mahathir likely responsible for the loss of Batu Puteh to Singapore, no legal action was initiated due to his age. In February 2024, the government announced that His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, had consented to the establishment of a Royal Commission of Inquiry into the government's 2018 decision to withdraw Malaysia's application to review the International Court of Justice's (ICJ) decision on the sovereignty of Batu Puteh. At the time, Dr Mahathir led the government. In 2008, the ICJ ruled that Batu Puteh belonged to Singapore, while Batuan Tengah was awarded to Malaysia. It also ruled that the ownership of Tubir Selatan should be determined based on the delimitation of territorial waters. The RCI, which concluded in December 2024, found weaknesses in the handling of sovereignty issues involving Batu Puteh, Batuan Tengah and Tubir Selatan.
