Marc Márquez wins crash-filled German MotoGP as just 10 riders complete race
Márquez's ninth MotoGP victory at the Sachsenring, in his 200th overall start, takes his season points tally to 344. He has stretched his championship lead over brother Álex, who finished second, to 83 points. Marc's teammate, Francesco Bagnaia, finished third and sits 147 points behind.
Álex had started fifth on the grid and took second in his 100th MotoGP start, despite still recovering from a fractured hand he suffered at the Dutch GP two weeks ago which required surgery.
Several riders crashed over the course of the race, especially at turn one – including VR46 Racing's Fabio Di Giannantonio and Aprilia's Marco Bezzecchi, who both crashed out when they were in second place.
But the day belonged to Marc as he marked his latest triumph at his favourite hunting ground by standing on his bike and doing a jig as he passed the chequered flag – a fourth straight weekend where he has won both the sprint and the race.
'One more [win at the Sachsenring] was super special. From the beginning, I felt good, the confidence when I started the weekend was super high because we were coming from three victories in a row,' Marc said. 'We are in an incredible moment. Now we can say that half the season is done, [but] we still need to be super concentrated.'
Marc Márquez had clinched his seventh pole position of the season on Saturday before winning a wet sprint despite a mistake at the first turn, but this time he had the dream start to take the lead into turn one ahead of Bezzecchi and Di Giannantonio.
As he slowly but surely started to stretch his lead, the two Italians swapped places while Álex Márquez and Pedro Acosta fought for fourth place on the sweeping corners. Acosta became the third rider to crash early on after Lorenzo Savadori and Miguel Oliveira, with the young Spaniard gesturing at his fallen machine in frustration.
Di Giannantonio had broken the lap record in Friday's practice and given the championship leader a tough time early in the sprint. But the Italian was unable to push any harder to catch up to Márquez, who found a comfortable rhythm and pace to surge more than two seconds ahead, despite easing off the throttle on two laps to conserve his tyres.
As Marc's lead stretched to more than three seconds, Di Giannantonio's challenge came to an end on the downhill braking zone on turn one when he lost control and crashed, with his bike tumbling across the gravel while he escaped unhurt. LCR Honda's Johann Zarco, who started second on the grid before getting pushed down the order, crashed at the same turn seconds later.
Bezzecchi had moved up to second but the Aprilia rider also bit the dust on the very next lap at turn one, moving Álex up to second while Bagnaia suddenly found himself in the podium positions. Trackhouse Racing's Ai Ogura then lost his balance on turn one and ended up taking out Honda's Joan Mir in the process, leaving only 10 of the 18 starters still standing.
'I tried to give my 100%. Also, I was a little bit lucky because [riders] sliding in front of me crashed. But this is racing, so you need to be there,' said Álex Marquez, holding an ice pack on his left hand. 'Today, it was important to survive... So I'm really, really happy. It's unbelievable to be here (after surgery).'
Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo finished fourth ahead of Alex's Gresini Racing teammate, Fermin Aldeguer. The next race of the season takes place in a week's time – the Grand Prix of Czechia, which sees MotoGP return to Brno after a five-year absence.

Man Utd's Bryan Mbeumo transfer shows major strategy change – but it could backfire and expose cracks in the club
THE overseas route resulted in the worst season in more than half a century. Now Manchester United have made a major transfer strategy change. 9 9 But if this one doesn't work, then questions will have to be asked about the entire state of English football's biggest club. While many United fans wanted to see more business - and certainly earlier signings - over the summer, it is clear that the Old Trafford hierarchy are backing Ruben Amorim. The swift signing of £62.5m Brazilian Matheus Cunha from Wolves was, eventually, followed by the weekend capture of Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo, for a tidy £65m up front plus a further £6m in potential add-ons. But United also made a move - admittedly a failed one - for Liam Delap, who decided to join Chelsea when Ipswich were relegated. And while their other key attacking target, Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokeres, seems intent on joining Arsenal, he also fits the new blueprint. Not necessarily players currently in the Premier League - but definitely those who know what English football is all about. Cunha's two seasons at Molineux have brought him 31 goals, with 27 of them in the Prem. Yes, there were also two suspensions, one for a tear-up with an Ipswich steward, the other for losing it completely in a scuffle with Bournemouth's now-Liverpool defender Milos Kerkez, but at least the Brazilian is battle-ready. Likewise, Mbeumo played 239 games for the Bees over six seasons, part of their rise from the Championship into Prem mainstays. The Cameroonian has demonstrated, already, that he knows exactly what it takes to succeed in the toughest league in world football. Forest in Sensational Sancho Swoop 9 9 Even the players United have looked to land and missed out on fitted that bill. Delap may have had just one campaign in the top flight but he has both family pedigree through his dad Rory but also that schooling at the Etihad. Gyokeres played at Brighton and Coventry before moving to Portugal, while United have also been linked with Aston Villa's World Cup-winning keeper Emi Martinez. By contrast, other than the £55m paid out to land injury-plagued Mason Mount - and Amorim will have his fingers crossed the midfielder can have a full season of availability - in 2023, the past few years have all been about trawling the global market rather than scouring and scouting closer to home. Last summer, even though Erik ten Hag had only kept his job by the skin of his teeth and that FA Cup triumph over City, United splashed out nearly £170m on Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Manual Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee, none of whom had kicked a ball in England. Before that, there was £120m spent on Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund, with Antony, Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez and Tyrrell Malacia costing another arm and a leg in 2022. Indeed, other than Mount, you have to go back to 2019, when United signed Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James, to find examples of the club buying first team starters from Prem rivals. Christian Eriksen was also signed from loan-club Brentford in 2021 - but as a free agent. 9 9 It is a significant move by United yet one that could expose, to even more certainty, the fault-lines within the club. If going the 'proven Prem' route does not bring success either - although, after last term, keeping Amorim for the entire campaign, maybe winning the Carabao Cup and securing European football might be a new definition of success - then it will be evidence for the prosecution. Amorim promised things would be better - and such vows can come back to bite. The trouble is that Amorim has inherited a squad that is simply not designed for the tactics and formation he is wedded to. Even the new acquisitions - and surely there must be more by the time the transfer window shuts on September 1 - do not look like being the solution at all the problems last term threw up. United did not score enough. Did not create enough. Conceded far too many. Lacked imagination and poise. As for confidence and self-belief - they are through the floor. And while the Portuguese can put in the hours with his squad on the training ground, he cannot do anything about the myriad of other issues at the club. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos knew that their cost-cutting programme would not be popular internally - although they insist it was a step that needed to be taken. Yet the Glazer debt remains the financial elephant in the room, while Ratcliffe's ambitious plans for an 100,000-capacity 'New Trafford' are still, at this stage, an expression of hope rather than a reality. United fans are looking for reasons for optimism and hope. But you do feel that negative signs will only deepen the clouds of doubt and concern. 9 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW And unless this is a season of progress, it will surely only confirm that truly seismic change, both on and off the pitch, is the only way forward. The Red Devils will jet off to the United States this week ahead of three matches as part of the Premier League's Summer Series. United's first face West Ham on Saturday at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where next year's World Cup final will he held. Amorim's side will then take on Bournemouth at 2:30am BST next Thursday in Chicago, and Everton at 10pm BST on August 3 in Atlanta.
