Lena Dunham Is Happy for Netflix Rom-Com ‘Good Sex' to Skip Theatrical Release: ‘I Don't Think This Will Live or Die By That'

Yahoo6 days ago
Lena Dunham isn't just making a comeback with her Megan Stalter-starring Netflix romantic comedy series 'Too Much' — she also has a movie she wrote and is directing set to premiere on the platform, and starring Oscar-winner Natalie Portman. In fact, it would appear that Netflix really wanted 'Good Sex,' also a rom-com which co-stars genre stalwart Meg Ryan, Mark Ruffalo, and Rashida Jones. After all, the streamer paid a reported $55 million for it.
Dunham, though, isn't precious about the movie forgoing a theatrical release to go straight to the platform. To her, that's someone else's battle.

'I really just want people to sit on a couch with their moms and their besties and lean in,' she said in an interview with Variety. 'I love watching other filmmakers fight for the theatrical-release element — but I don't think this will live or die by that.'
'Good Sex' went into production this month, so a release date is still very much pending. Tucker Pillsbury, known to the music scene as rapper Role Model, will make his film debut in the movie. 'He had this humor and essence that really felt like rom-com gold,' Dunham said, describing finding him on her shadow TikTok account. 'He's giving early Brad Pitt, like when you saw him in 'Thelma & Louise.''
In a nod to her late friend and romcom queen writer/director Nora Ephron, Dunham was excited to get Ryan on board. She pitched the movie to Ryan when they both attended Taylor Swift's London stop on the Eras tour. 'I decided, it's now or never, and I'm going to shoot my shot. She couldn't be a lovelier person,' Dunham related. 'Shout-out Taylor — thank you for that. She brings everyone together; she makes the world go round.'
Ryan has been slowly raising her profile once again, after a fairly stagnant period without much mainstream action. In February, she appeared in a much-discussed Hellmann's Mayo Super Bowl commercial with Billy Crystal that lampooned undoubtedly her most famous movie moment from 'When Harry Met Sally.' Two years ago, Ryan made her own stab at writing/directing a romantic comedy with the small-scale theatrical release 'What Happens Later' alongside David Duchovny.

Isaac Ordonez Reacts to His Major Growth Spurt Between 'Wednesday' Seasons: 'I Was the Same Height as Jenna' Ortega (Exclusive)

"I've grown quite a lot," the 16-year-old actor told PEOPLENEED TO KNOW Isaac Ordonez reacted to his growth spurt between seasons 1 and 2 of Wednesday in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE "I was the same height as Jenna in season one," the 16-year-old actor said with a laugh Ordonez also reflected on his increased role in the show's second season, saying he had "more free range" with Pugsley Addams, who will now join older sister Wednesday at schoolIsaac Ordonez might play Jenna Ortega's little brother in Wednesday, but after going through a growth spurt between seasons 1 and 2, he's now towering over his onscreen big sister. "I was the same height as Jenna in season one. I've grown quite a lot," the 16-year-old actor told PEOPLE with a laugh while attending the premiere for part one of Wednesday's second season at Central Hall Westminster in London. He added that he's now "hovering" over Ortega, 22, and he playfully referred to their height difference as "amazing." Ordonez brings Pugsley Addams to life in the hit Netflix series, which premiered in November 2022 and now returns for a second season on Aug. 6. The PEOPLE Puzzler crossword is here! How quickly can you solve it? Play now! In the show's first season, Wednesday Addams, played by Ortega, is the protective older sibling who tortures anyone who dares to go after her brother. Ordonez raved about getting to work closely with Ortega, telling PEOPLE, "Watching her through the monitor, like, you really start to pick up things." He added of the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Scream actress, "She's wonderful. She's such a nice woman." Pugsley didn't follow Wednesday to school at Nevermore in the show's first season. This time around, he's registered as a new student. 'It was definitely a surprise to see how much more I was in it, like a big promotion," Ordonez told NME in July of his enhanced role for season two. Teasing what is in store for Pugsley, Ordonez added, "He's got powers ... he makes a lot of friends, and also [makes] connections with some not so good people. I will say that." The young actor echoed those sentiments when speaking with PEOPLE. "It was great to really play around with this character," Ordonez said. "Now I have more free-range, and, like, room to really grow, you know?" He continued, "Last season we saw that more emotional side of him. That side returns, but we also get to see a lot more of his energetic side. We see him a lot more mischievous." Catherine Zeta-Jones, who plays Ordonez's onscreen mom, Morticia Addams, also spoke with PEOPLE at the premiere. When asked about getting into character, the actress, 55, stressed the importance of playing the Addams matriarch as "real and grounded." "Of course, I identify with being a mother. I certainly identify with that," she said. "I never had the struggle with my daughter that I have with Wednesday, thankfully, but I've certainly seen mothers have that." The second season of Wednesday finds the titular character dealing with being perceived as the "savior" of Nevermore after she overcame the villainous Laurel Gates (Christina Ricci) in the first season. 'The woman who rear ended my family and then drove off [when] we pulled over, hope your karma finds you," the actress wrote on InstagramNEED TO KNOW Mandy Moore is calling out a driver who rear-ended her family in a hit-and-run incident 'The woman who rear ended my family and then drove off [when] we pulled over, hope your karma finds you," the This Is Us star wrote on her Instagram Stories on Friday, Aug. 1 Moore shares three children with her husband, Taylor Goldsmith: sons August "Gus" Harrison, 4, and Oscar "Ozzie" Bennett, 2, as well as daughter Louise "Lou" Everett, 10 monthsMandy Moore is calling out a driver who rear-ended her family in a hit-and-run incident. On Friday, Aug. 1, the This Is Us alum, 41, revealed on her Instagram Stories that a woman struck her family's car before speeding off. 'The woman who rear ended my family and then drove off [when] we pulled over, hope your karma finds you," she wrote in the since-expired post, per Page Six. 'Thankfully everyone was OK but what kind of human does that?' Moore shares three children with her husband, musician Taylor Goldsmith: sons August "Gus" Harrison, 4, and Oscar "Ozzie" Bennett, 2, as well as daughter Louise "Lou" Everett, 10 months. The actress didn't specify in her post which of her family members were present during the accident. Moore has been candid about her family's struggles following the loss of their Los Angeles home in the Eaton Fire in January. On Feb. 11, she posted a photo of her house on Instagram, sharing that 'the contents of our home are a near total loss" due to its proximity to the fires and other burning structures. Moore previously said on Jan. 9 that 'miraculously' the 'main part' of the house was 'still standing.' "Pretty much everything will have to be disposed of…maybe even the walls too," she wrote. "We won't be there for a very long time as it and the neighborhood itself get sorted out and cleaned and the rebuilding starts." Six months after the fires, Moore's friend and former This Is Us costar Chrissy Metz shared in an interview with Extra that Moore was "doing well." "I mean, thank goodness. A lot of the structure was able to be salvaged, which is great, but it's so jarring. It's so life-altering, and she has children and pets," Metz said. In an Instagram update in March, Moore revealed that she and Goldsmith, 39, were ready to begin rebuilding, as she shared photos taken before their home burned down. Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. "I miss this space and our home and Altadena immensely, so I'm looking forward to rebuilding version 2.0," the A Walk to Remember star said at the time. The Eaton Fire was one of a series of wildfires in L.A. that left more than 80,000 people displaced, including numerous celebrities, and destroyed more than 1,000 structures. The deadly blaze ignited on Jan. 7 and was fully contained on Jan. 31, along with the Palisades Fire. Moore and Goldsmith have also been candid about wanting to still have fun as a new family of five amid the loss of their home. Earlier this week, the Tangled star shared an adorable photo of her family on Instagram as she recounted her time spent at the beach on vacation. In the sweet image, Moore could be seen sitting in the surf alongside her husband while her son Ozzy hung on around her neck. Sitting beside the star, Gus was pictured squishing his hands into the sand and looking down. Goldsmith propped up the couple's youngest child, daughter Lou, as she sat in his lap. Other snaps showed the family enjoying the beach and watching sunsets. "Nothing beats a beach vacation with some of your besties (here's looking you at you @whatsgabycookin)," Moore wrote in the post's caption. "What an epic few days, @fspuntamita! We can't wait to come back (Gus hasn't stopped talking about it)!!" Read the original article on People

Reds' Tyler Stephenson dons Ricky Bobby-inspired gear at Speedway Classic

BRISTOL, Tenn. — As soon as he heard about the game at Bristol Motor Speedway, Cincinnati Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson began brainstorming something special he could do for the game. Stephenson, whose walk-up music at Great American Ball Park is the Starlight Vocal Band's 'Afternoon Delight' from the movie 'Anchorman,' immediately thought about another of his favorite movies, Will Ferrell's 2006 romp, 'Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.' Advertisement 'A classic movie, and they did a great job, and I decided to wear it,' Stephenson said before the game. In honor of both NASCAR and one-time Cincinnati Red Farrell, Stephenson contacted his reps at Evoshield to create catching gear based on the Wonder Bread-sponsored No. 26 car. Stephenson's chest protector is mostly white, featuring a take on the Wonder Bread logo with 'Cincinnati' in place of the company's name. There are other details that make the outfit, including flames on the shoulders, the Speedway Classic logo, Stephenson's No. 37 in a race car-like font, the Reds' 'C' logo with checkered flags and the name 'Tyler Robby' stitched on the bottom of the chest protector. The shin guards are the primary red, white and blue of Wonderbread, and his hockey goalie-style catcher's mask is a work of art with racing graphics and other touches. A born-and-bred Georgian, Stephenson said he didn't grow up as a NASCAR fan, but was struck by just the size of Bristol Speedway, which has a seating capacity of 146,000 and at least 85,000 spectators for Saturday's baseball game. 'It's a sweet facility,' Stephenson said. 'It turned out even better than the pictures online. It's a totally different feel than the 'Field of Dreams' game. The historical part of 'Field of Dreams' was cool, but this is obviously a much bigger stage. What is it, 85,000-90,000 fans? It's like playing in front of a football crowd.' Stephenson was injured in 2022 when the Reds played in the 'Field of Dreams' game in Iowa, but still went with the team to the game to experience it. Fellow Reds catcher Jose Trevino had a pair of cleats customized commemorating a different racing movie, Pixar's 'Cars.' Trevino had his Lightning McQueen-inspired cleats signed by both Tim McGraw and Pitbull, who performed pregame. Advertisement Stephenson was a senior in high school when Farrell played with the Reds during spring training of 2015, but the catcher said he'd love for Farrell to come back to the Reds any time. Not only does Stephenson use a song from a Farrell film as his walk-up song, but when he was in the minor leagues, he and then-teammate Taylor Trammell posed together like in their Daytona Tortugas uniforms in the pose from the movie 'Stepbrothers,' another Farrell film with John C. Reilly, who is also in 'Talladega Nights.' We've come a long way brother 🤵🏻🤵🏾 — Taylor Trammell (@Taytram24) December 25, 2018 Of the three, though, 'Stepbrothers' is his favorite. 'Those are the top three,' he said. 'I think 'Stepbrothers' is No. 1. It's 1A, 1B, 1C — they're all right there.' As Ricky Bobby would tell him, though, 'if you ain't first, you're last.'
