Microplastics, oil and grease harming Puri's water: PCB report
Puri's WQI score slipped from 51 in 2023 to 37 in 2024, the recently released coastal health status report (2022-2024) revealed, calling for corrective measures.
Experts analysing the report pointed out that measures like sewage treatment and ecosystem restoration programmes should be taken up.
"Its (Puri) WQI is slightly below the permissible limit, which is why it is under the poor category. But it is not alarming and can in no way affect bathing.
But measures should be taken up at the earliest," said chief environmental scientist (SPCB) Niranjan Mallick.
The study focused on the entire 480 km of coastal stretch through a network of 91 designated coastal monitoring stations and 58 identified coastal outfall locations. The study covered three distinct hydrological phases — pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon, it said.
"There was temporal variation in the contribution of key water quality parameters to the estuarine sea ecosystem condition in Puri district over three years.

In 2022, there was a moderate level of pollutants and heavy metals (Pb, Fe, Mn) in the water, indicating a balanced condition. In 2023, parameters like DO and pH became less prominent, indicating deterioration of baseline water quality. But in 2024, faecal coliform and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) became prominent, indicating a marked increase in organic and microbial pollution," the govt report said.
The in-depth coastal health report also included the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) status of Olive Ridley turtles as vulnerable, and Irrawaddy and humpback dolphins as endangered. "Untreated sewage discharge from urban centres and peri-urban zones, especially during the peak pilgrimage season, is hugely responsible," it further said.
Additionally, it said agricultural run-off from the Daya and Bhargavi river basins introduces excessive nitrates and phosphates. The study specifically pointed out major anthropogenic factors in Puri.

Govt conducted DSC 2025 with transparency, says Lokesh
Visakhapatnam: Education minister Nara Lokesh said that DSC 2025 (teacher recruitment test) was conducted smoothly over a period of 23 days to recruit 16,347 teachers. "The DSC was conducted after a gap of seven years. About 3.36 lakh candidates submitted 5.77 lakh applications, with the exam attendance rate of 92.9%. Despite 31 court cases filed at the behest of the YSRCP, the examinations were conducted with fairness and transparency," the minister added in a social media post on Friday. "Provisions such as SC sub-categorisation and a 3% sports quota were implemented to ensure equity and inclusion in the recruitment process. The initial answer keys have been released, and candidates are encouraged to raise any objections or request corrections within the notified timeline," said Lokesh. He extended a note of appreciation to every district and state official involved in making the examinations a "success. Forest advisory panel puts Puri airport project on hold pending wildlife impact study
1 2 Bhubaneswar: Forest Advisory Committee (FAC) has directed Odisha govt to collaborate with Wildlife Institute of India (WII) for an evaluation of the possible impact of the proposed Shree Jagannath International Airport on local wildlife and the environment. Until the WII study is complete and a detailed explanation with a mitigation plan is furnished by the govt, the FAC, under the Union forest ministry, will keep the project on hold, thus deferring clearance. "The conservation measures and mitigation activities should be integrated into a site-specific wildlife conservation/management plan for the project. This should be approved by the chief wildlife warden before it is submitted to the MoEFCC," the advisory committee decision read. The airport is proposed to be developed over a 471-hectare area at an estimated cost of Rs 5,631 crore. The forest land to be diverted, if clearance is received, spreads over 27.88 hectares. "The govt, with WII's help, has been asked to justify the project, giving reasons that it won't invite climate eventualities," a forest department officer said. The WII's study will focus on migratory bird routes and the possible impact on Olive Ridley turtles and Irrawaddy dolphins close to the airport site at Brahmagiri. The FAC's directive followed concerns raised by the regional office of the Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change (MoEFCC). The FAC has also asked for a conservation and mitigation plan, requiring approval from the chief wildlife warden. It also highlighted environmental concerns about the planned cutting of 13,000 trees currently serving as a bio-shield and coastal shelter. Speaking about the development, a govt spokesperson said such steps are part of the standard protocol for large-scale infrastructure projects. "The commerce and transport department has already begun preparing the required mitigation measures in line with the FAC's recommendations and will submit the plan to secure stage-I clearance," the spokesperson said.
