India's financial crime agency probes Anil Ambani's Reliance Group, source says
India's financial crime-fighting agency searched 35 locations linked to Reliance Anil Ambani Group as part of an investigation into alleged money laundering and siphoning of public funds, a government source said on Thursday. The Enforcement Directorate alleges the group orchestrated a 'well-planned' scheme to siphon off bank loans from YES Bank worth 30 billion rupees ($350 million) between 2017 and 2019 to many shell companies, the source said on condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media. Anil Ambani's Reliance group entities are accused of paying bribes to YES Bank officials before loans were disbursed, the source said, adding that loan approvals violated the bank's processes. Reliance and YES Bank did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Several group firms of Anil Ambani, the younger brother of billionaire Mukesh Ambani, have gone into bankruptcy since 2017. YES Bank, from which Anil Ambani group firms had borrowed heavily, was declared insolvent in 2020 and rescued by a group of Indian lenders in a plan approved by the central bank. Japan's Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp is seeking a 20% stake in a deal that has yet to get regulatory approval. The probe also found gross violations in YES Bank's loan approval process, such as lending to companies with weak financials, backdating credit memos, 'evergreening' loans - issuing fresh loans to avoid labelling assets as nonperforming - and misrepresenting financials. YES Bank's former promoter, Rana Kapoor, was charged with bank fraud by the financial crime agency in 2020 and later arrested. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in 2024 by a special court in India's financial capital of Mumbai, according to local media reports. India's Reliance quarterly profit surges 78%, tops view Anil Ambani's group entities have been subject to several regulatory actions in recent years. In August 2024, the markets regulator SEBI barred Anil Ambani and 24 others from securities markets for five years, citing fund diversion from Reliance Home Finance. Shares of Reliance Infrastructure and Reliance Power fell as much as 5% on Thursday after the news of the latest probe circulated.

India bond yields seen flattish as traders eye debt supply, rate-cut cues
MUMBAI: Indian government bond yields will continue to be in a narrow range in early deals on Thursday, as traders await fresh debt supply a day later and watch if bets for a rate cut next month rise further. The yield on the benchmark 10-year bond is likely to move between 6.30% and 6.32%, a trader at a private bank said, after closing at 6.3117% on Wednesday. The 15-year 6.68% 2040 bond ended at 6.6094% in the previous session. 'Market activity has nearly died down, because many are still not fully convinced that we could have another rate cut in two weeks' time. However, we could see some action tomorrow based on the demand and cutoff for the benchmark,' the trader said. New Delhi will sell bonds worth 360 billion rupees ($4.2 billion) on Friday, including 300 billion rupees of the benchmark, taking the outstanding issuance to 1.2 trillion rupees, pushing up its liquidity. Traders are also gauging how expectations of another interest rate cut by the Reserve Bank of India evolve. A plunge in India's retail inflation to a more than six year low and expectation it will slip to a record low have led to increased talks of a rate cut. The RBI's next rate decision is on August 6. The central bank slashed its key interest rate a steeper-than-expected 50 bps last month and changed its stance to 'neutral' from 'accommodative', which had fuelled speculation that the rate cut cycle may be over.

Indian rupee likely to get a fleeting lift on US trade deals-driven risk rally
MUMBAI: The Indian rupee is poised to open higher on Wednesday, supported by upbeat risk appetite following progress on U.S. trade deals, although traders expect the move to be short-lived based on recent price action. The 1-month non-deliverable forward indicated the rupee will open in the 86.34-86.36 range versus the U.S. dollar, compared with the close of 86.4075 in the previous session. Recent sessions have shown that the rupee's opening strength often fades quickly. Tepid inflows, one-off dollar outflows, importer hedging, and weak near-term technicals have been cited as factors behind the currency's subdued performance by bankers. 'Intraday fades (on dollar/rupee) have not been sticking - importers are lying in wait and speculators are not showing up on the sell side,' a currency trader at a Mumbai-based bank said. 'It's hard to build a case for a move lower, no matter how positive the Asian cues are.' The rupee has been depreciating in a slow, orderly fashion, with volatility remaining subdued. Despite slipping to a near one-month low, the 10-day realised volatility has dropped to 2%, the lowest since January. Asia rallies Asian currencies and equities climbed on Thursday following more positive developments on the U.S. trade front. After the U.S. and Japan reached a deal to reduce tariffs, Washington and the European Union are reportedly moving toward a similar agreement that could include a 15% baseline U.S. tariff on EU goods—mirroring the terms of the Tokyo deal. Japanese shares extended Wednesday's rally and the euro crept toward its highest level in nearly four years on Thursday. Announcements of U.S. trade deals with Japan have boosted optimism that more agreements will be finalised ahead of the August 1 deadline, ANZ said in a note, pointing to an upcoming meeting between U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and China's trade delegation next week. Trade negotiations aside, markets will also be focused on a rate decision from the European Central Bank later in the day.
