They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and that's especially true for travel breakfasts. Starting off with a solid, satisfying breakfast gives you some extra flexibility in picking when and where you'll eat lunch, since you won't have to slam the brakes on sightseeing and exploring because you're starving by 11 o'clock.
And if you're looking for an especially memorable breakfast in Asakusa, Tokyo's most culturally traditional neighborhood, we've got just the place.
You'll find it at Ichi no Ichi, which is a restaurant located on the third floor of the Asakusa Tobu Hotel. Don't worry, though, the breakfast buffet is open to non-guests, so you can treat it like you would any other restaurant, and with the building located just one minute from Asakusa Station, it's super easy to slot into whatever other plans you have for your time in the neighborhood.
The fare is a mix of Japanese and Western-style dishes, so you can get things like pancakes, bacon, and sausages…
…or Japanese staples like simmered kabocha (Japanese pumpkin), grilled fish, and tofu.
These are all pretty standard at Japanese breakfast buffets, but what makes this one special is the onigiri (rice balls). Instead of just putting out a plate of them, the buffet has an onigiri bar, where a chef makes yours to order!
Just tell the chef what kind of topping you'd like, and he'll press the ingredients into the rice by hand. During our visit the options included Hokkaido salmon, Fukuoka mentaiko (spicy cod roe), and Seto Inland Sea chirimen (young sardines), but you can also request a simple no-topping onigiri sprinkled with salt. On the other end of the spectrum, the buffet's onigiri bar also offers decadent cheese-covered grilled onigiri.
Once your onigiri are ready, a server will bring them to your table, along with nori (dried seaweed) for you to wrap them in. Fresh and delicious, and with a perfect, hand-crafted density, they were immensely satisfying. Each individual onigiri is a little on the small side, but since this is a buffet you can always go back for more, and the sensibly sized portions also leave you with enough space to try multiple toppings, and to enjoy the buffet's other dishes too.
Speaking of other dishes, the Western-style offerings were no slouch either, with the eggs Benedict being an especially tasty standout.
The Asakusa Tobu Hotel/Ichi no Ichi breakfast buffet is open daily from 6:30 to 10 a.m., priced at 2,750 yen (US$19) for adults and 1,430 yen for kids aged 4 to 12.

This year, the venue will remain open through Oct. 26, with a short break from Sept. 8 to 12. The beer garden features a wide selection of drinks, including various beer brands and assorted fruit-flavored 'sour' cocktails. It also offers a variety of dishes such as Hachioji-style ramen, a local specialty. The popular barbecue area has been upgraded this year to offer an even more enjoyable outdoor dining experience, according to restaurant staff. Guests can enjoy a two-hour, all-you-can-eat-and-drink plan for 5,000 yen ($34) for adults, including junior high school students and older. Elementary school children can join in on the fun for 1,800 yen. The beer garden operates from noon to 9 p.m., and the cable car will run until closing time to accommodate guests.

Hijiribashi bridge, which crosses the Kanda River, remains crowded more than 30 years after author Ryotaro Shiba wrote about it in his book 'Kaido o Yuku' (Go on the road). Meiji University and Nihon University are nearby, giving the area a relaxed student town atmosphere. The bridge gets its name from the fact that it connects two holy places on the river — Yushima Seido, also known as the Mausoleum of Confucius at Yushima, and Nikolaido, also known as the Holy Resurrection Cathedral. Hijiri means holy in Japanese. Hijiribashi bridge was built in 1927 as part of reconstruction following the Great Kanto Earthquake that struck in 1923 and destroyed both Yushima Seido and Nikolaido. The bridge, measuring 92 meters long and 22 meters wide, is made of steel and concrete and was designed by Mamoru Yamada, a modernist architect who later designed the Kyoto up from the Aioizaka slope next to Yushima Seido, the bridge is beautiful with its large, smooth half-moon arches. Four small arches adorn the bridge at each end as if they are playing a rhythm. The simple appearance of the bridge conveys its strong will to withstand earthquakes. The JR Chuo and Sobu lines and Tokyo Metro's Marunouchi Line run under the bridge. The manmade valley is deep enough for the subway to reach above the early Edo period (1603-1867), the shogunate had the Sendai clan excavate the valley for flood control. Eventually, the valley became overgrown with plants and trees, giving it the nickname 'Meikei,' and even today, the street just south of the Kanda River is still called Meikei-dori. Yoshio Awano, 84, who runs Cafe Hotaka along the street where he was born and raised, said, 'Even now, with all the buildings around, a nice breeze passes by when I walk along Hijiribashi.' When he was a child, he climbed up on the wide straight railing. 'I would be scolded now as it was so dangerous,' he said with a laugh. On weekends, people including foreign tourists line the bridge with cameras. Fans from all over the world gather to take pictures from the same angle that the main character looked down from in Makoto Shinkai's anime film 'Suzume.' TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Visits by foreign tourists to locations related to manga and anime works in Japan have proven a boon to local economies, a research institute said, providing impetus for more areas to cash in on the nation's soft power reach. In 2024, around 3 million foreign tourists, or 8.1 percent of 36.87 million inbound visitors, likely visited places linked to movies or anime. That is up from 4.8 percent, or an estimated 1.15 million, of the 24.04 million who did so in 2016, the Meiji Yasuda Research Institute said based on a government survey. Purchases of anime and manga-related goods are estimated to have totaled 54.3 billion yen ($372 million) last year, up 53 percent from 2016, the report said. Japan's anime industry continues to expand, with more than 3 trillion yen spent by consumers globally in 2023, while animated films led domestic box office revenues in recent years. The phenomenon known as "seichi junrei," literally meaning "holy pilgrimage," has become a rite of passage for fans. They visit places that inspired or were the real-life settings for popular works. The trend became prominent after the success of 2016 Japanese anime film "your name." One popular destination among foreign fans is the Homangu Kamado Shrine in Fukuoka Prefecture linked to the "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba" anime and manga series. The southwestern prefecture ranked fifth in the nation in foreign tourist numbers, said Takafumi Fujita, an economist at Meiji Yasuda Research. In addition to its positive impact on local economies, the growing popularity abroad of Japanese content, including games and movies, also has the potential to reduce the country's massive digital trade deficit. While Japan incurred a record 6.8 trillion yen digital trade deficit in 2024 due to domestic firms' heavy reliance on technologies provided by U.S. IT giants, exports of Japan's entertainment content, which stood at 4.7 trillion yen in 2022, could offset much of the deficit if the industry continues to grow, the report said. However, the benefits are tempered by some downsides. Fujita said local governments need to address overtourism issues affecting the lives of those who live near the popular locations. "To accommodate a large number of tourists, including those from abroad, local authorities need to develop systems to offer multilingual support and train local tourism volunteers," Fujita said.
