Lee Zii Jia pulls out of Japan Open, cryptic post fuels speculation

Malay Mail2 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 — Malaysia's professional singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia has withdrawn from the 2025 Japan Open Badminton Championships, which will be held from July 15 to 20.
The latest development was reflected on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) website, which stated that the 27-year-old player will not be competing in the tournament. However, no official statement has been issued by Team LZJ regarding his withdrawal.
Zii Jia injured his ankle during the World Tour Finals last December and made his return in March at the Orleans Masters, where he lost to Ireland's Nhat Nguyen 21-23, 7-21 in the quarter-finals.
He then competed in the 2025 All England Championships in Birmingham from March 11 to 16, where he was knocked out in the first round by Hong Kong's Angus Ng Ka Long, 21-19, 16-21, 12-21.
The world number eight subsequently withdrew from the 2025 Swiss Open in Basel, Switzerland, held from March 18 to 23, due to the same ankle injury.
Last Saturday, the National Sports Council (NSC) confirmed that Zii Jia is in good condition and that there is nothing to be concerned about regarding his cryptic social media sketches shared on Friday.
NSC director-general Jefri Ngadirin said the council, along with Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, had contacted Team LZJ to seek clarification over Zii Jia's actions.
The cryptic post by Zii Jia has since garnered over 131,000 likes and more than 3,000 comments, sparking speculation over its meaning, including claims that he may be facing personal health or mental health issues. — Bernama

Pearly-Thinaah to earn RM1mil each in blockbuster BAM deal

KUALA LUMPUR: Women's doubles Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah are expected to land bumper new contracts worth RM1 million each per year after agreeing to stay with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). BH Sukan understands the lucrative offer was based on a decision made at a recent BAM council meeting despite talk that the world No.3 had initially pushed for even more, delaying the deal. However, BAM is believed to be open to increasing the package if Pearly-Thinaah hit their performance targets at three key tournaments - the Japan Open (July 15-20), China Open (July 22-27) and the World Championships in Paris (Aug 25-31). The pair have now agreed to sign on the dotted line, ending months of speculation over their future. They are expected to put pen to paper this weekend before flying to Tokyo. Their previous contracts expired in December last year, sparking rumours they might turn independent. But BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz had insisted the issue would be resolved before they head to Japan, and he's been proven right. Pearly-Thinaah have been in red-hot form recently, winning the Thailand Open, finishing runners-up at the Indonesia Open, and reaching the semi-finals of the Malaysia Masters and quarter-finals of the Singapore Open. When approached at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) on Tuesday, BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh refused to reveal more but hinted good news is on the way. "Just wait... the president already said it'll be sorted before the Japan Open, and there are still a few days to go," he said. "As he mentioned, the discussions have been very positive. That's all I can say. Of course, we want what's best so let's wait and see."

In the group stage they edged past Pulau Pinang 22–20, lost 17–24 to Kuala Lumpur but bounced back to thrash Kelantan 37–7. The team put up a spirited fight before falling 19–27 to Kedah in the semi-finals to share the bronze medal with Negeri Sembilan. The other three Sarawak teams – another in the boys' category and two in the girl's division – did not progress past the group stage. Perak emerged as girl's champions after defeating Kedah in the final while Kelantan and Kuala Lumpur settled for joint third.
