Ahly players send heartfelt apologies to club fans after World Cup elimination

Al-Ahram Weekly4 days ago

The Cairo giants dramatically concluded their campaign at the prestigious tournament, holding Portuguese powerhouse Porto to an exhilarating 4-4 draw in their final group stage match at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium.
However, Ahly and Port bid farewell to the tournament as Inter Miami and Palmeiras finished first and second place in their group stage.
Ahram Online collected post-match reactions from Ahly players:
Goalkeeper Mohamed El Shennawy
'We apologize. We wanted to please all of you today and achieve victory. We apologize from the bottom of our hearts. You are always behind us, in every second and every game.'
'Our relationship isn't just about football. We have one soul, one heart, and one target.'
The Egyptian international promised the supporters a new era with better achievements, stressing that players will fight to please the fans.
Midfielder Magdi Afsha
'We weren't lucky enough in the first game against Inter Miami and today against Porto. We wasted several scoring chances. We could have played other games with more rest if we had won in the opening game. Maybe other teams did more effort than us.'
'We are sad, and I know that fans wanted to see us in the quarterfinals. I apologize to everyone for what happened in previous games.'
'We scored four goals against Porto and I think we could have scored 10 goals with the wasted chances. For me the worst thing for me is elimination from the tournament.'
Right-back Mohamed Hani
'I know that fans aren't satisfied and that the performance wasn't the best one in the first two games, but today the majority of players did their best and we reached the goal a lot but we weren't lucky.'
'We were supposed to win with a bigger result, but this is football. This is a big lesson for us.
'Fans supported us a lot, and that was the first chance for several new players to play together, and also for the new coach, who needs more time to adapt.'
Winger Hussein El-Shahat
'We were fully concentrated and wanted to win to reconcile our fans. We played with hope to qualify till the last minute.'
'We wasted a lot of scoring chances, and we weren't lucky in other chances.'

Monaco close in on Fati loan signing from Barcelona - World

Barcelona forward Ansu Fati is expected to join French club Monaco on loan with an option to buy, sources close to the deal said Friday. The 22-year-old Spanish international passed his medical on Friday as Monaco and Barcelona agreed to a season-long loan deal with an 11-million-euro fee ($12.9 million) to make the move permanent. According to the same source, the contract will not be made official until July 1. Fati burst onto the scene at Barcelona aged 17, but has since failed to live up to initial high expectations. He made 11 appearances in all competitions for the La Liga champions last term, without finding the net. Fati spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Premier League club Brighton, where he scored four goals in 27 outings. With his expected arrival, Fati should become Monaco's third signing of the summer. Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is slated to sign for the Ligue 1 side, following on from England international Eric Dier. Pogba was also undergoing a medical with the principality side on Friday. The 32-year-old 2018 World Cup winner is seeking a club after having his contract terminated by Juventus in March while serving an 18-month suspension for doping. The trio should be officially announced to the press on July 3. (For more sports news and updates, follow Ahram Online Sports on Twitter at @AO_Sports and on Facebook at AhramOnlineSports.) Olivier Giroud to leave MLS side LAFC - World

Olivier Giroud, France's all-time top goalscorer, and Los Angeles FC have mutually agreed to part ways, the MLS club announced on Friday. The 38-year-old striker, who joined LAFC in May 2024 from AC Milan, will play his last match for the team on Sunday against Vancouver. "Olivier has been an exemplary professional during his time at LAFC," team co-president and general manager John Thorrington said. "He brought humility and a winning mentality that helped elevate everyone around him." Giroud has been heavily linked with a move to Ligue 1 club Lille, according to several media reports in France. Giroud helped LAFC reach the 2024 Leagues Cup final, where he scored his first goal for the club. He also scored in the 2024 US Open Cup final, helping LAFC win the trophy for the first time. "I want to thank all of the fans, my teammates and the staff at LAFC for making this an enjoyable stop in my career," Giroud said. "I am happy to have played a part in the success of LAFC." Giroud has scored nearly 300 goals in more than 700 club matches, winning major trophies at Montpellier, Arsenal, Chelsea and AC Milan. The 2018 World Cup winner leads France's all-time scoring charts with 57 goals. Athletics: Jamaica's Fraser-Pryce qualifies for 9th World Championships - Omni sports

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce punched her ticket to a ninth World Championships with a third-placed finish in the 100m at the Jamaican national athletics trials on Friday. Fraser-Pryce, a three-time Olympic gold medallist and 10-time world champion, clocked 10.91sec to finish third in the women's 100m final and secure a berth for the World Championships in Tokyo in September. Tina Clayton won her first national title in a personal best of 10.81 with reigning 200m world champion Shericka Jackson second in 10.88. Tia Clayton, twin sister of Tina, was fastest in the semi-finals but pulled up with an apparent injury in the final. Fraser-Pryce won her first world championships medal at Osaka in 2007 -- a silver in the 4x100m relay -- before going on to win 10 world titles, five of them in the 100m. In front of a large turnout that included treble world record holder Usain Bolt, she delivered when it mattered most. "It's been a long journey," Fraser-Pryce said after the final. "But it was not about making the team, it was about celebrating the journey and I am grateful for those who have been part of the journey. "It takes strength and resilience to have made it so far, but it was always a joy and privilege to represent Jamaica and I hope I will leave a legacy of inspiration to every girl who has a dream for achieving more." In the men's 100m final, Paris Olympics silver medallist Kishane Thompson delivered a blistering 9.75sec (wind .8m/sec), his personal best making him the sixth-fastest performer in history. Only Justin Gatlin (9.74), Asafa Powell (9.72), Yohan Blake (9.69) Tyson Gay (9.69) and world record-holder Bolt (9.58) have gone faster. The 23-year-old, who was beaten by just 0.005sec by Noah Lyles in the 100m final at the Paris Games, sliced two hundredths off his previous career best of 9.77 set in June of 2024. Oblique Seville shrugged off concern over a tight hamstring to finish second in 9.83 and Ackeem Blake was third in a personal best of 9.88.
