Ulrika Jonsson hits back at 'nasty' ageism comments over her appearance
The TV host, 57, was videoed talking to Spencer Matthews on his podcast Untapped earlier this week, but on social media the clips sparked more conversation about her appearance than her words, as she discussed sobriety.
After the vocal onslaught – in which many asked about her skin, her age, and made jokes about her complexion – the model took to social media and called out the haters.
'I feel I need to address something,' Ulrika began alongside a selfie of her in a sunhat.
'I don't get a lot of nasty comments – or if I do, I don't see them or send people love in response. But a couple of weeks ago I took part in a fab podcast @untapped.podcast to discuss my sobriety with the smart @spencermatthews.
'I wore no make-up. Partly because I kinda forgot that a project for the ears is nowadays also a feast for the eyes. https://www.instagram.com/p/DMNyMV0o008/?hl=en
'But as someone who has had to wear heavy make-up on screen from 5am for years, I'm not a fan.
'Most crucially tho, since childhood I've suffered from eczema. On my body – the creases of my arms and legs – on my face – eyes and lips.
Make-up has always been the enemy because it's been agony to wear.
'There were a lot of positive comments about the WORDS I said on the podcast. But a considerable amount about my tanned appearance.
AND how OLD I look.
'In a few weeks I will be 58. I will never look like the fresh 21yr old that used to greet you first thing in the morning by the weather board.
'I'm not ashamed to say that I am a sun worshipper and will no doubt pay the price for that. But UV lamps and salt baths, astringent solutions and creams were a feature of my life since I was a small child.
'I have uneven pigmentation doubtlessly not helped by ageing. I sometimes use filters in my pics because it's easier than foundation and less painful.
'I work tirelessly in my garden year round and often in the sun. I rarely sunbathe any more. Haven't had a sunbed for 6 months – which I do occasionally in winter months. Not ashamed.'
Ulrika went on to claim she hadn't been on a holiday 'of any kind' in seven years, despite seemingly having enjoyed a trip to Corfu in 2021, according to her social media.
She continued: 'So, I understand that an over-tanned, imperfect and AGEING face offends you. But try to listen to the words rather than constantly judge women's appearance.'
'You might learn something. And making people feel s**t doesn't make you a hero.'
Ulrika also discussed her sobriety on the podcast, having celebrated one year sober in June. https://www.instagram.com/p/DKgjPaPq_2r/?hl=en&img_index=1
'I believe that I will never drink again,' she told the former Made in Chelsea star. 'I'm tapping into the person that was always there that I didn't think was there when I was drinking.
'I thought I was s**t. My opinion of myself was never very high,' she said.
'My mindset, my approach has just completely changed, and at nearly 58 I didn't think that would be possible. I thought I wasn't very good at life, I wasn't cut out for it, and I was just a pretty average to rubbish person.'
Ulrika's comments about ageism come after she made an accusation against former MasterChef presenter Gregg Wallace, who hit back with a now-infamous comment that he was being targeted by 'middle-class women of a certain age'.
Jonsson told The Telegraph that when she competed on Celebrity MasterChef in 2017, Wallace allegedly had to apologise after making a 'rape joke', which caused another female contestant to become 'really distressed.'
After Wallace's comment, she told The Telegraph: 'When he made reference to women of a certain age I was just seething… I was just absolutely wild.'
'My first reaction was just, 'Keep digging, Gregg. Keep digging' because this shows the arrogance of a man who has zero introspection or self-awareness.
'When we refer to women 'of a certain age', they tend to be women my age, over 50, which is ironic because we are some of the hardiest women out there. When I was starting out, we had to put up with all sorts of sexist, misogynistic comments, and we put up with them.'
Wallace has since been axed from MasterChef after 45 allegations made against him were upheld in an investigation into his behaviour.
He denied many of the allegations and said he was 'deeply sorry' for any distress caused.
Former Gladiators host Ulrika previously opened up about her journey with ageing, saying that she avoids mirrors as her face is 'collapsing and diminishing'.
'I try to avoid mirrors for that very reason because I will look into them and pull everything about me apart,' she wrote in The Sun. 'I'm wondering if it's an age thing.
'Goes without saying that the ageing process is not as fun as you hope. Or as gracious and forgiving as you think it will be when you're in your twenties.'
She explained: 'Fast forward to my fifties and 'putting my face on' takes an hour. All I see is how my face is collapsing and diminishing – except for the hairs on my chinny, chin, chin. There's plenty of them.'

Louise Thompson praised for bikini photos showing stoma bag as she urges 'be kind'
Former Made In Chelsea star, Louise Thompson, has bravely shown off her stoma bag in a selection of bikini photos after years of battling ulcerative colitis Louise Thompson has been praised for proudly showing her stoma bag in some inspiring new bikini photos. The mum-of-one, 35, revealed last year that she had been fitted with a stoma, which is a surgically-created opening made in the abdomen to divert the flow of body waste, after years of battling ulcerative colitis. The former Made In Chelsea star, who is the sister of fellow reality star, Sam Thompson, has spoken openly about her health concerns after a traumatic birth with her son, Leo, who she shares with fiancé, Ryan Libbey, in 2021, in which she almost died. After revealing she had a stoma fitted following numerous hospital appointments to treat her chronic bowel condition, Louise has now urged people to "be kind" after sharing snaps of herself sporting a yellow bikini in which her stoma bag, which she calls 'Winnie', can clearly be seen. Captioning the photos in which she looks radiant in her two piece, on holiday, Louise admitted she doesn't usually wear a bikini, sharing: "I'm not a big bikini girl these days. I don't think it's a confidence issue, I just really enjoy the comfort of a swimsuit. It's very practical and dare I say it - when you reach your mid 30s I think practicality equates to sophistication. "There's another thing I don't LOVE - people looking at me that much. Stoma or no stoma. It doesn't happen to me often now I'm a bit older and a mother (gone are the days of men checking me out on the tube or the beach), but regardless of circumstances - you definitely get more attention with a random black or grey bag glued to your abs. Unsurprising really." Stating she feels "no shame" when she looks at her body, insisting it's a "privilege to exist", she continued: "I fancied giving my tummy a bit of tan time/vit d on holiday… so here she is. "The old bod. Me and Winnie hanging out. Wearing her with pride. I think I've still got it. I feel good." Asking people to "be kind", Louise continued: "I don't feel held back at all, but I know some do and I want to remind anyone out there that doesn't really understand what this is that lots of normal and nice people in the UK have them (100k) and to be kind. "Don't judge. Let people wear what they want. Ask nice questions if you really can't help it. You might learn something cool. #stoma." After sharing her positive post, Louise was flooded with praise, including from one follower, who said: "You look incredible, but even more than looking incredible, the way you speak about how things are for you will help so many people to get through their difficulties. If ever there was a inspirational woman, you are it for me." Meanwhile, another said: "You're amazing, Louise" as another wrote: "Little black stoma bag, goes with everything" followed by a huge love heart emoji.

In the midst of their trip, the former I'm A Celebrity champion confirmed that she had "major news" to share and soon some fans began to speculate that a pregnancy announcement was afoot. In one of her photos, Georgia could be seen salmon fishing in a lake and was wrapped up tightly under some waterproof dungarees in order to keep herself warm in the cold country. But these layers appeared to give Georgia a 'baby bump' which left her followers convinced her major news was baby related. Commenting underneath the snaps, one curious fan asked the star: "Are you pregnant?" The Made in Chelsea star's husband was quick to step in and respond to shut down any speculation of a pregnancy. He replied back to the fan: "I don't think she is." It turned out that Georgia's news was actually related to her catching her first Atlantic salmon after failing to do so in three countries previously. The couple were joined by their two black Labradors for their low-key holiday. Georgia married the millionaire Brewdog founder in Scotland earlier this year. Georgia Toffolo strikes glamorous looks as she visits Cheltenham races The ceremony took place in Gardenstown, Aberdeenshire. Scots beer tycoon James, 42, revealed some details of their wedding day, including that they got married in the same church that his grandparents tied the knot in. He also said their ring bearer was their pet spaniel. Similar to their current trip, the couple headed aboard a fishing boat shortly after the ceremony. The pair posted pics of onboard a fishing boat, with Georgia donning a cosy strapless wedding dress. The off-shoulder fur dress was ideal for embracing the northeast weather. While James harked back to his fisherman roots, as he donned a wool sailor's jumper and a pair of blue WADERS! Ulrika Jonsson: My wrinkles shouldn't matter
Ulrika Jonsson has said her wrinkles should not matter after she was trolled for not wearing make-up. The 57-year-old hit back at 'vindictive and hurtful' online criticism of her appearance on a recent podcast and admitted that it made her feel 'awful'. The Swedish-born television personality said she was kind and intelligent and the state of her ageing skin 'should be of no consequence'. She received abuse after speaking on Matthew Spencer's Untapped podcast earlier this month, where she discussed her alcoholism and achieving more than a year of sobriety. Jonsson did not wear makeup for the interview, which was also being filmed, resulting in her social media being 'flooded with hurtful comments' about how she looked when it was released. Comments included being called a 'hag', that she had 'let herself go' or even 'gone to seed', while others told her to put make-up back on. Writing in the Sunday Times about the backlash she suffered, she said her heart 'started hurting' as a result of the 'nasty' messages she received while having such a 'vital' conversation. She wrote: 'I felt an uneasy sensation in my entire body. It made me feel awful.' Jonsson admitted that she had previously tried both Botox and filler but now she wants to 'look [her] age'. 'I've fought hard against the whole perception of women being solely about beauty and image,' she continued. 'I'm a practical woman and I come with a wealth of experience, kindness and intelligence. 'The fact that I now have wrinkles, lines and jowls should be of no consequence.' 'Getting older is a privilege' Jonsson said she suffered from eczema as a youngster, meaning the idea of wearing makeup as she got older was 'not a priority'. She credited Pamela Anderson, who is the same age as her, for being the driving force of a growing number of women who are going au naturel and leaving makeup altogether. 'I know what the alternative to ageing is and, with my newfound sobriety, serenity and inner peace, I don't want to go there right now,' Jonsson added. 'Getting older is a privilege, even though for some nasty, cruel individuals, that's conditional upon us girls keeping our make-up on and staying wrinkle-free.'
