Youth charged with murder in 2024 Vancouver Island homicide
The body of Tavis Cagg was found at a home in Lake Cowichan on Sept. 3, 2024, the same day he was reported missing, the RCMP's Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit said last year.
A suspect was identified at the time and that person was arrested and charged on Wednesday, according to authorities.
'The suspect has been released by the court and is to abide by multiple court-ordered conditions. The youth's name cannot be released as it is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act,' a Thursday statement from the RCMP said.
'To preserve the integrity of the investigation and the judicial process, no further details will be provided.'
When the homicide investigation was first announced, police described Cagg's killing as an 'isolated incident' but did not provide any details on how Cagg died, why his death was suspicious, or the relationship – if any – between the victim and suspect.

Searchers find body of sole occupant of abandoned boat on Lake Winnipeg

RCMP say they were contacted Sunday morning that an abandoned boat was found in open water near Willow Island, south of Gimli. Upon arrival, local Coast Guard authorities told officers that a wallet and cellphone were located on the boat, but there were no occupants. RCMP say they deployed their Marine Unit and Underwater Recovery Unit, and a few hours later searchers located a 62-year-old man in the water dead. Police say he was the sole occupant of the boat. Alberta RCMP say two dead, one in critical condition after vehicle hits pedestrians

Photo by James West / Postmedia files GLEICHEN — Mounties in southern Alberta say two people are dead and a third is in critical condition after a vehicle hit a group of pedestrians and then left the scene. RCMP say five people were walking on the Siksika Nation on Saturday night when they were struck. Two men, aged 27 and 45, who are both residents of the Siksika Nation, died. The injured woman is 45 and also a resident of Siksika, while police say the two remaining people weren't hurt. RCMP say their Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation. 2 dead, 1 in critical condition after hit and run on Siksika Nation

Police say five people were out walking when they were hit by a vehicle around 9:30 p.m. Saturday. The vehicle fled the scene. The deceased are a 27-year-old man and a 45-year-old man. A 45-year-old woman was taken to hospital in critical condition. RCMP said the other two people in the group were not injured. RCMP is seeking assistance with the investigation and are looking for anyone who may have video footage or surveillance of the area of 54 Map 3 Subdivision between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Anyone with information about the hit and run is asked to contact Gleichen RCMP at 403-734-3923. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers.
