County law enforcement association responds to protests against ICE raids
Protesters have clashed with federal agents and law enforcement for the fifth straight day in L.A., influencing a movement in other major cities such as Chicago, Dallas and New York.
Raids by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have happened locally as well, including on May 30 at Buona Forchetta and its sister restaurant in South Park.

Chula Vista Police Chief Roxana Kennedy, in her position as president of the San Diego County Chiefs and Sheriff's Association, issued a statement about the raids and protests on behalf of the organization, which is comprised of other city police chiefs and law enforcement personnel across the county.
The statement said the association is aware of the immigration-related enforcement operations happening across the region and the nation, and it continued to say the departments are committed to 'uphold(ing) justice, preserv(ing) peace and protect(ing) the rights' of the community.
Dozens of people have been arrested in L.A. during the protests. Meanwhile, hundreds of Marines and thousands of National Guard members were deployed under the direction of President Donald Trump, including troops based in San Diego.

'We understand that recent federal immigration actions have prompted strong emotions and public concern,' Chief Kennedy said in her statement.
'While we support the public's right to free speech and lawful protest, we urge that these expressions remain peaceful,' she added.
Local agencies in California, including those represented under the association, do not enforce federal immigration law or question people about their immigration status in accordance with Senate Bill 54, the statement said.
Kennedy's statement also went on to say assaults on law enforcement or acts such as looting, vandalism or arson 'will not be tolerated.'
'Should federal authorities request our assistance due to safety concerns, local law enforcement will respond as necessary to ensure the protection of all involved—officers, agents, and members of the public alike,' the statement read. 'This support is strictly for safety and security purposes and does not reflect participation in immigration enforcement.'
Other agencies that are part of the San Diego County Chiefs and Sheriff's Association include California Highway Patrol, city police departments, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and others.

RFK Jr. ‘reviewing' ouster of preventive task force members
Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said Monday he is 'reviewing' whether to remove all members of an influential advisory committee that offers guidance about preventive health services. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force is composed of medical experts who serve four-year terms on a volunteer basis. They are appointed by the HHS secretary and are supposed to be shielded from political influence. The task force reviews reams of scientific evidence to make recommendations on services such as cancer screenings, HIV prevention medications and more. It makes its recommendations using a grading scale, and ObamaCare requires insurers to cover services the task force recommends with a 'grade' of A or B at no cost to patients. The Wall Street Journal first reported late last month that Kennedy was considering firing the panelists because they were too 'woke.' During a press conference about the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Kennedy did not deny that removing the members of the task force was under consideration. 'The task force has done very little over the past five years, and we want to make sure it is performing, and it is approving interventions that are actually going to prevent the health decline of the American public. And it hasn't,' he said. 'We're looking at the personnel and we're making the decision now, but no decision has been made.' Kennedy's office abruptly postponed the July meeting of the task force, alarming some Democrats and public health leaders. The discussion on removing the entire task force comes on the heels of a Supreme Court decision in June originally focused on a recommendation to cover certain HIV-prevention drugs. The ruling asserted Kennedy has the power to hire and dismiss panelists at will, as well as to potentially delay or veto the recommendations they issue — something no prior administration has done.

White House seeks Christmas volunteers, performers
Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Have you ever wanted to participate in the White House's annual Christmas celebrations? Here's your chance to volunteer to help decorate or to perform during open houses. "Americans from every U.S. state and territory are invited to apply for the opportunity to assist with decorating at the White House or showcase their talents as a performer at the holiday open houses," a press release said. Applications are open starting Monday and will close at 5 p.m. Sept. 5. Selected applicants will be notified by 5 p.m. Oct. 13. All volunteers must pay for their own travel, accommodations and expenses. They must be 18 or over and available to work Nov. 24-30. Performers and musical groups will perform during open houses in December. Acts including school bands, choirs, and holiday-themed entertainers are encouraged to apply, the White House said. First ladies have worked on the holiday celebrations through the years, showcasing their own visions of holiday decor. First Lady Dr. Jill Biden hosted National Guard members and their families for her holiday decor unveilings. "One of the privileges I have as first lady is deciding who will be the first to experience the magic of the season here at the White House. And every year, I've asked to share it with the National Guard families," Biden said during the unveiling in 2024. First Lady Melania Trump's first Christmas season, honored "Time-Honored Traditions." "The president, Barron, and I are very excited for our first Christmas in the White House," the first lady said in a statement.
