Additional sessions judge Sushil Kumar (4th) sentenced Nitin to one year, 10 months and 11 days in jail with a fine of Rs 10,000 for keeping 1.6 kg of ganja, which had been recovered by police nine years ago.
He was arrested by Sahibabad police on March 15, 2016 near Mohan Nagar. The prosecution informed the court he was arrested on suspicion. "When a police team under sub-inspector Radheshyam Yadav was on its patrol duty, one man coming from Rajiv Colony tried to escape on seeing police, so he was stopped for questioning.
He confessed to carrying ganja and he was informed about his right to be frisked before a magistrate, but he refused and allowed the police team to do so," the prosecution said.

The court took cognisance of the case under Section 18 read with 20 of the NDPS Act on Oct 9, 2023, following which the hearing started and the prosecution completed recording evidence on Feb 18.

The accused supported the prosecution narrative and confessed to carrying the said quantity of ganja for his personal consumption. He, however, denied the prosecution theory that he used to sell ganja to the factory workers to earn a living and urged for leniency.
The court decided to award a term of sentence that the convict had already spent in custody. "Though arrested in March 2016, the accused spent one year, 11 months and 10 days in jail to date, so he is being sentenced with the same term under Section 18 read with 20 of the NDPS Act and is directed to deposit a fine of Rs 10,000, failing which he must spend 30 more days in judicial custody," the court said.

The court was hearing the plea of Shankesh Mutha challenging a trial court's order rejecting his anticipatory bail plea under BNS read with the Extradition Act. The plea said Mutha worked at a firm in Bangkok in 2013 and returned to India after eight years. However, the company filed a complaint against him in 2021, alleging that he stole eight diamonds worth around 15.16 million baht (Rs 3.89 crore) and fled. The Southern Bangkok Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant, and Thai prosecutors commenced extradition efforts. The high court found merit in Mutha's submission of not having knowledge about any criminal proceedings. "The petitioner has joined the inquiry... and there is no allegation of non-compliance or obstruction on his part," the court said.

Mumbai: A lot can happen on a date. Why, one could even get scammed by the partner. In a dating scam case, 21 people, six of them women, have been arrested. The women would scout for targets on dating apps, call the men to restaurants on a "date", connive with restaurant staff to con the man by generating inflated bills. The man had matched with a 22-year-old woman, Disha, on a dating app on April 11. They exchanged phone numbers and agreed to meet at a restaurant in Eksar locality a day later. When the man reached the venue around 6 pm, Disha was already waiting for him. The two ordered liquor, a hookah pot, and energy drinks. Eventually, a bill of Rs 35,000 was presented to the man. He refused to pay the "excessive" amount when a restaurant staffer started to threaten him, said an officer from MHB Colony police station. The man dialled up police helpline '100' and called the cops to the restaurant. The staff reduced the bill to Rs 30,000, and the woman offered to pay half of it. Later that day, the complainant realised that the UPI payment of Rs 15,000 he had made was to a personal ID, not that of the restaurant. The police tracked down the UPI ID and also scrutinised the woman's phone call records. They traced the woman, and after inquiring with her, busted the racket. A team led by deputy commissioner Anant Bhoite and senior inspector Ganesh Pawar arrested 21 people. The police said that the women had been conniving with restaurant staff who generated inflated bills. The man was threatened into paying up, and the woman later got her cut from the restaurant staffer. Apart from killing Chhattisgarh real estate trader Sanjeev Tripathi in 2022, Dwivedi is also accused of killing a student, Gaurav Singh, in 2019. BHU's professor in charge (external communication), Anurag Dave, said before every year, on commencement of admission season, list of students expelled, debarred, or suspended in different cases and issues in past years is released. As per the same routine, deputy registrar (academic) on Jul 4 released a list of 114, asking the university's admission committee not to consider their admissions in any of the courses of BHU during the 2025-26 academic season. All institute directors, deans of faculties, heads of departments, principals of colleges and coordinators of centres and schools have also been given this alert.
