Terengganu man conned of over RM100,000 in forex scam linked to Facebook ‘friend's sister'

KUALA TERENGGANU, Aug 5 — An elderly man lost more than RM100,000 after falling prey to a foreign currency exchange (forex) scam. Kuala Terengganu police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor said that the 77-year-old joined a forex scheme on May 28 after being coaxed by the sister of a woman he had befriended on Facebook. Azli said that in the first week, the victim made a capital payment of RM3,000 and was given a fake receipt as proof that the money had been deposited into his forex account. 'The suspect also sent him a WhatsApp screenshot showing the profit he had made. Excited, the victim continued to make additional capital investments of RM69,000. 'The victim then tried to withdraw his profits but was instructed to make another payment of RM35,844, claiming that the profits he made involved elements of money laundering,' he said in a statement today. Azli said the victim, upon realising he had been deceived, lodged a police report, and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code. — Bernama

MP queries why only 2 Sabah reps charged over graft probe

KUALA LUMPUR: A member of parliament has called for clarification over why only two out of eight individuals allegedly linked to a corruption scandal involving Sabah assemblymen have been charged in court. Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee (PN–Beluran) raised the matter in the Dewan Rakyat today, questioning the government's next course of action against the remaining six suspects featured in a viral video clip. "YB Tambun (Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) presented the 13th Malaysia Plan that outlines that enforcement agencies such as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and Auditor General to be strengthened in efforts to combat corruption, leakages and abuse of power. "But when we talk about corruption, we cannot overlook the case involving eight Sabah assemblymen, where only two have been brought to court. What about the other six?" he asked during the debate on the 13MP in the Dewan Rakyat today. Ronald claimed the two individuals charged do not hold positions within Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), while the six others were high-ranking party leaders. He alleged that they include the party's deputy president, vice-president and treasurer-general, as well as the Sabah State Assembly speaker. He said the public deserves answers, as all eight individuals were implicated under similar circumstances. "The only difference is the amount of money involved; some were recorded receiving RM500,000, some RM400,000 or RM300,000," he said. He questioned if the lack of action against the others was an "oversight" or an example of "selective action". "What action is being taken against the other six? Is this an oversight, or is it an example of selective action? "I do not wish to accuse the MACC of practising selective prosecution, but a concrete and decisive explanation must be provided," he said. The controversy stemmed from the release of a video clip published by a news portal, which allegedly depicted a conversation between several assemblymen and an unidentified person recording the footage. In total, one audio recording and three video clips — purportedly showing exchanges between the assemblymen and the person behind the camera — surfaced on the portal.
