More: 12 things to do in the Coachella Valley this week, May 5-11
Jazz: In the world of jazz, Diana Krall is not only a trailblazing female singer/pianist, she's the only artist to debut eight albums at No. 1 on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. She's won two Grammy Awards and has seven multi-platinum albums.
Some of her prominent songs are her versions of the Burt Bacharach and Hal David song 'Walk On By' made popular by Dionne Warwick, her duet with Michael Bublé on Gilbert O'Sullivan's 'Alone Again (Naturally)' and the Joni Mitchell hit 'A Case of You.'
Krall will perform on Saturday at Agua Caliente Resort Casino Spa.
If you go: 8 p.m. Saturday, Agua Caliente Resort Casino Spa, 32-250 Bob Hope Drive, Rancho Mirage. Tickets $69.50 to $129.50. aguacalientecasinos.com
Dance: Experience an unforgettable night of music and movement at this Dance Mojave show dubbed 'The Planets.' Tickets to this outdoor dance performance — which takes place both Friday and Saturday — are $30 per car, so pack as many friends and family members into your ride as you'd like, then head over to Sky's the Limit Observatory and Nature Center in Twentynine Palms to see the show and experience the center's telescopes afterwards. The 75-minute performance is set to Gutav Holst's suite as well as original music arranged by Jeremie Levi Samson. "Planets" features choreography by local dancers, and each piece is inspired by a different planet, from Mercury through Neptune (as well as the Asteroid Belt and Pluto).
If you go: 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sky's the Limit Observatory and Nature Center, 9697 Utah Trail, Twentynine Palms. Tickets start at $30. eventbrite.com
Tribute: When The Doors started playing in 1965 at venues around Los Angeles, lead singer Jim Morrison's stage presence was viewed as both alluring and provocative, along with the blend of blues, electric jazz and rock 'n' roll. In 1967, The Doors' self-titled debut album was a hit, and the band continued to push the bar higher with every release until Morrison's untimely death in 1971.
Wild Child, a tribute to The Doors, will perform on Friday in The Rock Yard at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino.
If you go: 7 p.m. Friday, The Rock Yard at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, 84-245 Indio Springs Parkway. Admission is free. fantasyspringsresort.com/rock-yard/
Alternative: Dean Wareham is a prominent figure in indie rock, and his 40-year music career includes co-founding the band Galaxie 500 with Damon Krukowski, then Luna and Dean & Britta with bassist and wife Britta Phillips. He began a solo career and released his first self-titled album in 2014.
Wareham will perform on Saturday at Pappy and Harriet's.
If you go: 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Pappy and Harriet's, 53-688 Pioneertown Road, Pioneertown. Tickets are $39.54 presale and $46.59 day of show. pappyandharriets.com
Latin: During the '80s, Amanda Miguel attained notoriety and prominence in Mexican music for her piano playing and melodic pop hits. She also collaborated with her late husband, Diego Verdaguer, who was also an established figure in Latin music.
See for yourself when Miguel performs on Saturday at Spotlight 29 Casino.

Toto's ‘Africa' Remains A Global Hit — And It Rises To A New Peak

Toto's 'Africa' climbs to No. 142 on the Billboard Global 200, marking a new career high as the ... More classic track remains a favorite for millions around the world. Group portrait of American rock band Toto, Amsterdam, Netherlands, 27th September 1982. L-R Mike Porcaro, Steve Lukather, David Paich, Jeff Porcaro and Steve Porcaro. (Photo by Rob Verhorst/Redferns) Throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, Toto was on fire, as the band racked up multiple top 10 hits on the Hot 100 in the United States. The pop-rock group won several Grammys during that time period, including both Record and Album of the Year in 1983. Decades later, there is one tune Toto holds as its most famous — and also one of the most popular tracks from that era. "Africa" is still something of an anthem for millions of people, and it remains a song that countless singers know every word to. The track is usually found on Billboard's global rankings, and this week, fans all around the world have pushed it to a new high. "Africa" Climbs on Billboard's Global Charts "Africa" appears on both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. The former ranks the 200 most-consumed tracks across the planet, while the latter operates in a similar fashion, but excludes streams and sales from America. On the Billboard Global 200, "Africa" jumps more than 20 spaces, soaring from No. 164 to No. 142. The song also increases on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S., surging over 40 spaces from No. 197 to No. 156. Toto Reaches a New Career High The single is the only one from the group to ever appear on the worldwide tally, so every time it earns a new peak position, the band does as well. Toto rocks higher than ever on the Billboard Global 200, as interest in 'Africa' appears to be growing. The same cannot quite be said when it comes to the Billboard Global Excl. U.S., where "Africa" remains Toto's biggest win, but it does not climb to a new peak at the moment. In January of this year, "Africa" reached No. 145, just a little more than 10 spaces above where it sits now. "Africa" Remains the Band's Signature Hit "Africa" served as the second single from the album Toto IV, which dropped in the spring of 1982. The track followed "Rosanna," which was also a huge success for the band. "Rosanna" brought Toto a new high point on the Hot 100, where it stalled in the runner-up spot, while "Africa" gave the group its first and only No. 1. In the decades since, the track has been certified diamond for shifting at least 10 million equivalent units in the U.S. alone.

Joni Mitchell receives Royal Canadian Geographical Society's gold medal

Joni Mitchell has received the Royal Canadian Geographical Society's gold medal for her cultural contributions, including promoting Canada to the rest of the world. The society says the singer-songwriter received the award at a small ceremony near her summer home in British Columbia. CEO John Geiger says Mitchell's music 'has painted emotional landscapes for generations' and her work speaks to the soul of Canada. The society points to Mitchell's 1971 song 'A Case of You,' which includes the lyrics 'I drew a map of Canada / Oh Canada.' Previous recipients of the medal include Mitchell's contemporary Gordon Lightfoot, filmmaker James Cameron and painter Robert Bateman. The society says the award was created to recognize people for 'a particular achievement' in the field of geography or a significant national or international event. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 2, 2025.
