O'Shea hoping returning runners don't have to do heavy lifting at Kembla

Randwick trainer John O'Shea will be keeping a close eye on the weather and track condition at Kembla Grange for Tuesday's meeting as he plots the return to racing of a couple of talented stable runners.
O'Shea, who trains in partnership with Tom Charlton, is hoping for the Kembla track to dry out a little from heavy to soft to boost his chances of snaring a potential winning double.
O'Shea has Livin' Thing and Lady Zodiac set to contest the Racing Mates Provincial Benchmark 64 Handicap (1000m), while the promising Straand Beauty is down to run in the JJJ Racing Punters Precinct 31st May Bennchmark 64 Handicap (1200m).
'Straand Beauty is a handy Exceed And Excel gelding that is having his first run for us and is first up from a spell,' O'Shea said. 'But he has already shown his fair share of talent. He's been placed in city company three times and has won a Wyong maiden.
'He's had a couple of barrier trials in preparation for his return, and he's looked good in both of them. We are just looking for a reasonable surface for him to kick off again in. He's ready to go
though.'
Braith Nock takes the ride on Straand Beauty, and O'Shea is impressed with the apprentice.
'He's ridden plenty of winners, and we've had a bit of luck with him and, importantly, he can still claim at the provincials, so that comes in handy,' O'Shea said.
Apprentice Anna Roper is booked to ride Livin' Thing, while Tyler Schiller is down to ride Lady Zodiac.

Anahita chases Flemington comeback win for new trainer Gavin Bedggood

Cranbourne trainer Gavin Bedggood will attempt to snap another long winning drought in the last race of Saturday's Flemington meeting. Bedggood managed to prepare former WA galloper Windstorm for his first win since 2019 in last Saturday's Caulfield finale. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Recent stable acquisition Anahita will shoot for her first win since July 2023 in Saturday's Inside Headquarters Handicap (1410m). However, the time gap could be a touch misleading as Anahita was banned from racing for a year following a positive test for an androgenic steroid when in the care of original trainer Matt Laurie, who was later fined for the error. Anahita has only had three starts for Bedggood since going for champion Sydney trainer Chris Waller but has steadily improved at each outing. • 'We were the common enemy': How Morrison united Victorian racing Anahita raced on the speed before finishing less than two lengths from the winner in heavy conditions at Sandown before running on well when three-quarters of a length from Vienna Vixen, also at Sandown, on July 16. 'She's actually been good,' Bedggood said. 'She's travelled pretty strong, loomed to win the race at her last couple and just been found wanting late. 'She came to me in good order, very fit, so it's just been a matter of ticking her over.' Trainer Gavin Bedggood will attempt to give Anahita her first win for two years at Flemington on Saturday. Picture: Getty Images. Anahita is a $27 chance in early betting on Saturday's race, in which the mare will jump from Benchmark 70 class to a Benchmark 78 contest. However, Bedggood noted Anahita had been competitive in much harder races, including when fifth, beaten 1¼ lengths in a Group 2 race over the Flemington 1400m course last spring. • Shinn holds off Williams for Melbourne jockeys' title 'She wasn't far off winning and was competitive in Group 2 company during Cup Week,' Bedggood said. 'Hopefully, she can get back in the winner's stall before she goes to stud. 'She's getting on in days now. I suppose she'll go off to stud this year but I'll leave that for the owners to decide.' Another stable recruit, well-travelled galloper Casino Seventeen will be on trial for a start in a Melbourne Cup qualifier in the VRC Membership Renewals Open (2530m). Casino Seventeen finished fifth in last year's Perth Cup before heading east to join Bedggood, who is the eight-year-old's eighth trainer. The veteran of 49 starts has raced in every mainland state except Queensland in a career that included 10 wins and more than $1.4m in earnings. 'He's very tough, and for a tried horse, he's come to us very sound, which makes my job easier,' Bedggood said. 'Saturday is the fork in the road run. If he was to win on Saturday, we might have a throw at the Archer (Stakes) and just see where you land. 'But there's plenty of second level races around for him at this time of the year,' The winner of the Archer Stakes will earn a Melbourne Cup ballot exemption.

Blake Shinn wins 2024-25 Melbourne jockeys' premiership

The last metropolitan race of the season turned out to be a metaphor of the Melbourne jockeys' premiership battle for champion rider Craig Williams. Williams put up a strong fight in the last months of the season but was unable to reel in reigning Scobie Breasley Medallist Blake Shinn, missing the opportunity to join record holder Damien Oliver on 10 Melbourne jockeys' premierships. Shinn led Williams by seven wins at the start of Wednesday's Sandown meeting but neither rider added to their tally on the final metropolitan race day of 2024/25. Williams had eight rides at Sandown but was narrowly denied a consolation win in the last race when his mount Makdane was shaded on the line by $41 outsider Superstock. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. Daniel Stackhouse was third on 48 wins. Shinn's premiership triumph was his third in Melbourne while he is the only jockey to have won Melbourne and Sydney jockey's titles, winning the Sydney crown in 2007/08. Shinn will also claim the Victorian Jockeys' Premiership, which includes metropolitan and provincial wins after Thursday's season finale at Sale. • 'We were the common enemy': How Morrison united Victorian racing The all-powerful Ciaron Maher stable took out the Melbourne trainers' premiership with 113 wins, 44 ahead of the Ben, Will and JD Hayes team. Maher also won the national trainers' premiership with 329½ wins, 52½ in front of Chris Waller. Young jockey Tom Prebble emulated his father Brett when he claimed the Melbourne apprentices' title by one win over Jaylah Kennedy. Brett Prebble won the Melbourne apprentices' crown in the mid-1990s before embarking on a stellar career that included more than 500 wins in Hong Kong and the 2012 Melbourne Cup on Green Moon.

‘Deserving winner': Jimmy Orman delighted to watch Angela Jones win Brisbane jockeys' title

Jimmy Orman would have won his fourth consecutive Brisbane riding title if he hadn't seized the opportunity of a lifetime in Hong Kong, but he is chuffed that Angela Jones got to walk in his premiership footsteps. Orman is back in Queensland on a family holiday and has been paying notice to the final stages of the premiership race with Jones warding off great mate Emily Lang to make history as the first female jockey to score the Brisbane premiership. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. If Orman hadn't been snapped up in Hong Kong, he would have scored his fourth successive Brisbane title as he already had 45 winners under his belt for the Brisbane season before heading off in February. Orman will soon be back riding in Hong Kong, where he is contracted until February, but is chuffed that Jones and Lang fought out the riding title. • This isn't a novelty': Female hoops set up for success 'Ange is a great rider and so is Emily and both have ridden really well this season,' Orman said. 'When I first started riding in Brisbane I was already noticing the increase in female riders, especially in the apprentice ranks. 'Back then there were also a lot of girls who were going to be apprentice jockeys, but they didn't end up riding for one reason or another. 'It's great to see these girls riding so well for a leading stable, with Tony Gollan, and I think Ange is a deserving winner. 'I had been going for four (premierships) but I upped and left. 'It's superb to see a female jockey has won the title for the first time.' Champion Queensland trainer Gollan said it was hardly a surprise that history was made at Doomben. 'This was always going to be a matter of when, not if,' Gollan said. 'There has been this emergence (of female jockeys) going on for some time. 'It's terrific for both of these girls, they have both had breakout seasons, and it's really good for racing. 'My stable has always been receptive to using female jockeys, even going right back to when I trained in Toowoomba.' • Rosehill, politics, the haters and his future: V'landys reveals all Queensland Racing Minister Tim Mander was thrilled with the fabulous racing milestone. 'This is an historic moment in Queensland racing,' Mander said. 'While there can only be one winner, I'd like to congratulate both Angela and Emily on terrific seasons in the saddle. 'I hope their achievements inspire other young women to pursue their dreams in the industry.' Angela Jones (right) celebrates her title win with nearest rival Emily Lang and trainer Tony Gollan. Picture: Steve Pohlner Meanwhile, Orman will soon return to Hong Kong where he hopes to build his connections after already riding 13 winners there. He was initially snapped up by the Hong Kong Jockey Club after several jockeys suffered injuries in a fall. • Beriman's appeal for concussion protocols to be strengthened But he has made the most of his opportunities there and wants to try to make it a longer-term stint. 'It's a good lifestyle and it's great racing, so I will try and stay as long as I can while I'm doing well,' Orman said. 'It will be better for me when I go back this time, because I now know more about how the system works. 'I don't want to set my goals too high, I just want to try to stay consistent and build more connections. 'If you can ride winners you can stay, that seems to be how it works.'
