Exchange Income Corporation Announces Commitment to Expand the Atik Mason Indigenous Pilot Pathway in Nunavut
The Program was initially established in 2022 in Thompson, Manitoba and was expanded to Rankin Inlet, Nunavut in 2024 which is the first and only of its kind in Nunavut. With the completion of the acquisition of Canadian North which expands our footprint in Nunavut, the doubling of the capacity of the Program in Nunavut for next year was an obvious and natural choice for EIC and consistent with the Corporation's history of investing in the communities we serve.
'We take seriously our responsibility to invest in the regions which we serve. This is why we originally expanded the Program to Rankin Inlet where it has been remarkably successful with the first student starting to fly for us this year and five others will be completing their training in 2026 with jobs waiting for them at our airlines,' stated Mike Pyle, CEO of EIC. He continued, 'With the acquisition of Canadian North we are thrilled to be materially expanding the Program in Nunavut and see many more Inuit joining our companies as pilots. Through this expansion we will not only invest in the assets needed in Nunavut to support the Program's growth but also invest in the Inuit living in the communities. They are our future pilots. These types of investments are a cornerstone of who is EIC is, how we operate and what will continue to drive our success operating in the North.'

‘Time is now' for hydro connection to Nunavut: Inuit association president
A proposed hydroelectric fibre link from Manitoba's power grid to five communities and two mines in Nunavut's Kivalliq region should be part of the national infrastructure strategy, according to an Inuit leader. But the federal government has been keeping the project on the back burner for at least four years, Kono Tattuinee, the president of the Kivalliq Inuit Association, told an audience at the Nunavut Arctic Security and Sovereignty Summit in Iqaluit on June 26. Tattuinee said that transitioning off 60-year-old diesel generators is a priority for the region. 'We've done our best to work with different departments. We tried to get our foot in the door of the finance minister's office, but we were half in and half out and never really made it,' Tattuinee told those gathered at the summit. An hydro-electric power connection to Nunavut would allow the territory to start building its own renewable energy facilities and sell electricity back to the rest of Canada's, according to a website pitching the project. The Nukik Corporation, an Inuit-owned company lobbying the federal government to build the 1,200-kilometre hydro fibre link, counts Tattuinee among its board of directors. Arviat, Baker Lake, Chesterfield Inlet, Rankin Inlet and Whale Cove, along with two gold mines and future resource projects in the Kivalliq Region, would benefit from the connectivity, according to the website. High-speed internet for residents, hospitals and businesses would also be a feature of the hydro-fibre link. Nukik Corporation's project has been mentioned three times in federal budgets since 2021, and it received $2.8 million to advance engineering and design work last year. The Department of Northern Affairs estimated construction would begin in 2028 at the time. But Tattuinee told the Nunavut Arctic Security and Sovereignty Summit that the federal government had been keeping proponents of the hydro-fibre link in the dark. 'We have it on a silver platter. It's all ready, shovel-ready — we were shovel-worthy a few years back, and now we're shovel-ready,' Tattuinee said. Despite the frustration with the pace of development, Tattuinee said he's hopeful about the future and believes the federal government will eventually make the project happen. 'We Inuit, we're resilient, we want to push this through. The time is now, and so we're very hopeful,' he said. The federal government passed Bill C-5 on June 26, giving itself far-reaching powers to fast-track 'nation-building' infrastructure projects, the same day as Tattuinee's comments to the summit. S&P/TSX composite manages slight gain on real estate strength
TORONTO - Canada's main stock index finished slightly higher Friday, helped by strength in the real estate sector, while U.S. markets were closed for the Fourth of July. The S&P/TSX composite index was up 1.90 points at 27,036.16. Brent Joyce, chief investment strategist and managing director at BMO Private Investment Counsel Inc., said in an interview that gains in real estate stocks are 'interest rate driven,' adding that it appears likely the U.S. Federal Reserve will be cutting interest rates in July. 'Real estate is certainly going to be keying off of interest rates in the short term. In Canada, real estate's a lot of different things, if you think about the logistics area, the warehousing and industrial side of the real estate sector. 'If it's appearing like we're going to have a better outcome than certainly several weeks ago on U.S.-Canada trade, then that's going to boost that part of the real-estate sector as well.' Joyce added that the TSX moving above the 27,000 mark is 'psychologically important.' 'Eleven of the past 13 weeks now we've had advances. With an almost unbroken string of advances for the past three months since April. You've got momentum in these indices; getting through that round number level is a psychological barrier that now could propel things higher,' he said. Going forward, Joyce said he expects more gains on the TSX, reaching beyond the 28,000 mark toward the end of the year. Growth on the TSX, he said, could be driven by both valuation and earnings. In contrast, he said U.S. markets are likely to need earnings growth to justify higher valuation levels. Joyce highlighted a higher degree of certainty in markets following the passing of the massive tax and spending cuts package by the U.S. House of Representatives. He said the next thing for markets to look for is looming trade deals as the clock ticks on U.S. President Donald Trump's July 9 tariff deadline. On U.S.-Canada trade relations, Joyce said Canada went from being 'public enemy No. 1' a few months ago to 'let's just be friends.' 'We've digested that there's going to be some level of tariffs, I think, between Canada and the U.S. And if it comes in better than that, which I think there's a good chance that it can, then this market certainly is going to react positively to that,' he said. He added that tariff uncertainty may cast a fog over upcoming earnings releases in the U.S. for the third quarter. 'We're moving into U.S. earnings season next week and beyond ... I think we're going to have a bit of fog that the market is prepared to look through here, tariff front running, uncertainty, some decisions being delayed perhaps over the past couple of months,' Joyce said. He said markets may 'give companies a bit of a pass' on the quarter, given some of the uncertainty, and instead look at guidance for the end of the year and into next year. The Canadian dollar traded for 73.50 cents US compared with 73.66 cents US on Thursday. The August crude oil contract was down 50 US cents at US$66.50 per barrel. The August gold contract was up US$3.60 at US$3,346.50 an ounce. The commodities prices are snapshots only as there are no settle prices on U.S. holidays.
