
Post-op treatment blamed for Middlesbrough woman's diabetic coma
Mrs Ashton, who has the genetic MODY3 form of diabetes, said she felt abandoned and that "nobody was paying attention" to her condition or concerns, during her time in hospital in October 2022.In the days after the operation, she said she had bouts of vomiting and was unable to keep prescription medication down.During this period, sick bowls were often left out of reach and some calls for help went unheeded, she claimed.Mrs Ashton said repeated requests for alternatives to oral medication went unmet and signs of DKA were missed until her condition had deteriorated.
'Extreme vulnerability'
Her husband Colin Ashforth said he raised concerns with nursing staff when he visited on 8 October and found her "barely conscious".He said he was told his wife was sleeping.The trust said DKA was diagnosed later that day when the ward's nursing team noticed a deterioration in her condition.It said "all appropriate actions" were then taken to manage DKA, with a doctor requesting a follow-up visit from a diabetic specialist nurse.However, the visit did not happen for another three days, because it coincided with a weekend. Mrs Ashton said she now has to take insulin and her faith in the health service was "completely undermined" after being "let down at a time of extreme vulnerability"."When you go into hospital, you are handing yourself over to who you believe and hope are caring professionals," she said."I was left with an overriding sense of abandonment and I continue to struggle with PTSD as a result of that."
Action pledged
Mrs Ashton said medical and nursing staff were "dismissive" of her concerns, inconsistent in their record keeping and there was inadequate catering for diabetics. The trust said it found DKA was likely to have been caused by "poor oral intake" and the administration of the drug Empagliflozin, an anti-hyperglycemic medication associated with an increased risk of the condition. Delays and shortcomings in the trust's handling of the complaint were reported to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman and the hospital trust sent its conclusion to its investigation to Mrs Ashton last week.In correspondence seen by the BBC, group chief executive officer Stacey Hunter and site medical director Dr Diane Monkhouse said they were "very sorry" that Mrs Ashton's experience had caused her distress.A letter outlining action to be taken said feedback would be shared with staff, and at a directorate meeting addressing a lack of information given to the patient and her family.It also said feedback of the patient's opinion of staff being "dismissive" would be shared and an audit of discharge letters would be carried out.
Call for awareness
Mrs Ashton said she was not satisfied with the outcome of her complaint and wanted the trust's CEO to apologise to her in person.She said: "This was a diabetic problem but I was in hospital for a cancer problem, so the focus was on the general surgery, not diabetes."It's about education and awareness, because diabetes has such a fundamental impact on your total system."

The GoFundMe has officially been closed, and Ashton is currently undergoing medical treatment in the UK. His story has been a miraculous feat.

Cwmbran man fighting for life in Thai hospital has ‘woken up'
On May 30 29-year-old Ashton Jones, travelled to Bangkok Thailand with his lifelong friend for a lad's holiday. Sadly, just five days later his family received the news that Ashton had been separated from his friend and had undergone extensive emergency brain surgery. 29-year-old Ashton Jones from Cwmbran has 'woken up' after fighting for his life in a Thai hospital (Image: Angela Roden Shepherd) Now just a week later Ashton's gone from having a do not resuscitate order in place to being able to show basic signs of communication. Childhood friend Angela Roden Shepherd aged 50 has been a shoulder for Ashton's family to lean on. In an emotional post online, she shared the happy news. Angela said: 'Progress is really good for Ashton. I actually spoke to him today which was amazing. 'I say speak I can speak to him, and he can acknowledge. He can nod and he can shake his head and that's purely because he's got the tube going down his throat. 'He's still being ventilated and tube fed but he is trying really hard to speak. He told his dad he loves him, told his friends that he misses them.' So, the family set up a GoFundMe to help raise money to bring him back to the UK. An incredible £22,110 has been raised so far which Angela explained has been going towards Ashton's increasing medical bills. In the video Angela said: 'We've raised an amazing amount of money, but we still have a little bit of a way to go. 'All our medical bills are starting to come out. As an example, the ventilator he's on is costing 60,000 baht a day which I believe is around £50 to £60.' 'That's without his medication, that's without his feeding tube, without the care the staff have been giving him every night he stays in hospital. So, we still do need to keep raising money.' He's smiling he's chatting he's telling his dad he loves him but it's still not safe for him to fly because of the length of time after surgery. 'The family are over the moon they just want him home now.' A community fundraiser is being held at the Halfway Pub in old Cwmbran. The event is taking place July 5 with all funds going towards bringing Ashton home. A raffle is being held alongside a barbecue and karaoke. The fundraiser will be running from 12pm onwards.

NI man tackles famous seven-day marathon in Sahara desert to raise funds after son's life-threatening diagnosis
A Lisburn man recently completed a 250km Sahara adventure to raise funds for the BHF after his son was diagnosed with a heart condition Darran Cusick undertook the Marathon des Sables to fundraise for the British Heart Foundation after his teenage son Ashton was diagnosed with a heart condition. Travelling the world through his work, and being used to working in extreme temperatures for 20 years means Darran was well used to the sun when it came to his ultramarathon participation.
