Kimi Antonelli got a three-place grid penalty for the British Grand Prix after colliding with Max Verstappen in Austria. Antonelli apologized, and Verstappen accepted.
Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli has been hit with a three-place grid penalty for the upcoming British Grand Prix after the stewards found him at fault for a collision with Max Verstappen on Lap 1 in Austria yesterday.
After starting from P9 on the grid, Antonelli locked up the rear brakes of his Mercedes in Turn 3, causing him to hit Verstappen's Red Bull, which put both cars out of the race.

Both were summoned to the stewards over the incident, where the verdict was that Antonelli was 'fully at fault" for what happened, though it was also acknowledged that the move had been a 'result of the evasive action after locking up".

Given that the teenager was unable to continue in the race, the penalty decided upon was a three-place grid drop for the next race, that being Silverstone next weekend on July 4-6, as well as two penalty points on his licence.
Speaking after his early exit from the race at the Red Bull Ring, Antonelli said: 'I just apologised straight away. I recognise it's all on me and I just feel sorry because I ended my race, but I ended his as well."
'I think I had a normal start, then going up to T3 I was just trying to maintain the position. I didn't want to do anything because I knew there was no space in front, but then when I hit the brake, I locked the rear, and I got caught by that.
'When I locked the rear, I lost the car, and then I had to first avoid the Racing Bull [of Lawson], but then I just couldn't stop the car. Unfortunately, I hit Max, and I just feel very sorry towards the team and him, of course.
Verstappen was seemingly accepting of Antonelli's apology.

The World Champion, reflecting on the incident, said, 'Unlucky, I guess. It is what it is. I spoke quickly to Kimi, and he came with me to the hospitality. I think every driver has made a mistake like that. No one does that on purpose as well, so for me, that's not a big deal," said Verstappen post-race.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem will face a challenge to his bid for re-election as president of the FIA, motorsport's world governing body, after a rival candidate emerged on Thursday. The BBC reported American Tim Mayer, a former Formula One steward and son of former McLaren principal Teddy Mayer, would announce on Friday he was standing against the Emirati. A press conference was called at a venue outside the Silverstone circuit ahead of British Grand Prix practice. Mayer, 59, told the BBC last November that he had been fired via text message by an assistant to Ben Sulayem. Ben Sulayem, an Emirati, is scheduled to attend the race which marks the midpoint in the Formula One season. He has already announced he is seeking a second term. The FIA is the governing body for F1, the world rally championship and Formula E among other series.

Gareth Bale's €46 million dream: Former Tottenham, Real Madrid star bids to buy hometown club

Pictures) Former Wales and Real Madrid star Gareth Bale is reportedly preparing a dramatic return to football, but not on the pitch, raher, in the boardroom. The 35-year-old, who retired in 2023, is leading a consortium bidding to purchase Cardiff City, the club based in his hometown. Bale has submitted an offer exceeding €46 million to acquire the Welsh side, a move that would see him pay less than half of the €99 million Real Madrid shelled out for his services back in 2013. The former Galáctico said, 'We're interested in Cardiff. It's my hometown club, where I grew up, and my uncle (Chris Pike) played for them,' as quoted by MARCA . Cardiff City, recently relegated to League One, is currently owned by Malaysian businessman Vincent Tan, who is reportedly open to selling. The club has already rejected an undisclosed initial offer from Bale's consortium, but talks are expected to continue. Bombay Sport Exchange Episode 1: Interview with Sanjog Gupta, CEO (Sports) at JioStar Earlier reports stated that Bale's group had explored acquiring other clubs, including a failed attempt to buy Plymouth Argyle. However, his interest in Cardiff appears deeply personal and long-term. 'Being part of an ownership group would be a dream come true,' Bale said. 'I'd love to be part of Cardiff's growth and take it to the Premier League, where it deserves to be.' Poll Do you think Gareth Bale will successfully purchase Cardiff City? Yes, definitely! No, I don't think so. If successful, Bale would join a growing list of footballers turning owners, following the likes of David Beckham and Gerard Piqué, as he aims to drive Cardiff's resurgence from League One back to the top flight.
