Mamelodi Sundowns are gearing up for their biggest Fifa Club World Cup challenge tomorrow, when they lock horns with Borussia Dortmund at the TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio (6pm SA time kick-off).
Despite being deemed underdogs in this high-stakes encounter, the South African champions are brimming with confidence, ready to make their mark on the global stage.
Zimbabwe international Divine Lunga, one of the stand-out players when Sundowns secured a crucial 1-0 victory against South Korea's Ulsan HD in their opening Group F match, said Dortmund are the 'big guns'.
Lunga, who was a surprise inclusion ahead of the seasoned Aubrey Modiba against Ulsan, is acutely aware of the formidable reputation of their opponents, but is unfazed by the challenge ahead.
Lunga has received great praise in Zimbabwe's media since he is the first player from the southern African nation to play in the Club World Cup, and was part of the first African team to win a match at the tournament.
'Everyone knows what Dortmund are capable of. They are not a small team... they are the big guns,' Lunga asserted.
'Yes, we might be underdogs, but where we come from, people know who Mamelodi Sundowns are, and they know what is going to happen when you meet up with Mamelodi Sundowns.'
Eight-time Bundesliga champions Dortmund drew blanks in their opening game on Tuesday against Brazilian heavyweights Fluminense, while Sundowns moved to the top of the log after their 1-0 victory.
Lunga praised the team's tactical preparation ahead of the Ulsan clash.
Sundowns' triumph over Ulsan was more convincing than the 1-0 score-line suggests, with goal-scorer Iqraam Rayners seeing two more goals disallowed and Cardoso's men commanding 68% of the possession.
'We did well,' he stated, noting how they were able to anticipate Ulsan's game-play effectively.
'When they made changes, we were a bit surprised, but it was still going well on our side.
'I was happy about the win; we gave it our all, and everyone (in the team) fought to get a win.
'They were what we expected because we did analyse the games they had been playing before they came to the Fifa Club World Cup.'
Given Dortmund's recent struggles, most notably a disappointing draw with Fluminense, the German side might be more vulnerable than ever.
This presents Sundowns with a golden opportunity to secure one of their most illustrious victories to date.
Cardoso will have a selection headache because some second-stringers produced superb performances in the opening group match.
Newcomer Keanu Cupido, starting at centre-back, was one such player. He showcased his potential with a stellar performance, and emerged as a hero after he prevented a late equaliser with a crucial intervention.
Much to the delight of the travelling Sundowns fans, Themba Zwane reclaimed the captain's armband after a nine-month hiatus due to injury.
It will be interesting to see if Zwane is again in the starting line-up tomorrow.
Tashreeq Matthews, the young winger, came off the bench during Sundowns' impressive victory over Ulsan.
If he cracks the selection nod, he'll face his former club, providing a significant narrative twist to an upcoming fixture.
While his time on the pitch was limited, Matthews showcased his undeniable talent, getting into superb positions.
His ability to find space and create opportunities is a testament to his skills.

'Why I flopped in 2010': Ex-Bafana star Teko Modise finally speaks

Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Teko Modise has revealed why he failed to perform at the 2010 FIFA World Cup on home soil. Having been the face of South African football for two years, all eyes were on the former Orlando Pirates attacker ahead of the tournament. After a poor 2009 Confederation Cup, 'The General' redeemed himself at Pirates and won the Footballer of the Year before the World Cup after a remarkable season. Speaking to Josta Dladla on Izinja zeGame podcast, Teko Modise said he was miserable ahead of the tournament and that affected his performance for Bafana Bafana. 'The reason why people think that in the World Cup I was invincible is because people will look at me with emotions,' he said. 'They wanted to see a shibobo. We were playing Mexico, and they (Mexican players) are playing in Spain, La Liga.' 'If there's one thing that failed me in the World Cup was that I was the most miserable, most unhappiest person in life. Not in football, in life. So generally, in my personal space, I was in a horrible space. I wasn't happy, and of course, the only thing that made me survive was playing in the World Cup,' said the former Bafana Bafana star. After his poor showing at the World Cup, Teko Modise only played a handful of matches for Bafana Bafana under Pitso Mosimane. His form dropped, and he was benched by Pirates before making a high-profile switch to Mamelodi Sundowns in 2011. He rediscovered his mojo with the Brazilians and went on to win a number of trophies. Unfortunately, his Bafana Bafana career never recovered after 2010, and Teko Modise finished his international career with 66 caps with 10 goals. Fawaaz Basadien targeting more silverware at Sundowns

'I can't wait to see you guys fill up the stadiums and watch us win more trophies,' he said. Mamelodi Sundowns have secured the services of Fawaaz Basadien from Stellenbosch FC, with the left-back completing a permanent move to Chloorkop following an impressive three-year spell with the side from the Cape Winelands. Basadien, who joined Stellies ahead of the 2022-23 season, quickly established himself as a key figure, amassing 111 appearances across all competitions. The 28-year-old was instrumental in the club's recent success, contributing eight goals and 18 assists from defence. Basadien is targeting more silverware with the reigning Betway Premiership champions. 'Masandawana family, I'm happy to be here. I can't wait to see you guys fill up the stadiums and watch us win more trophies,' he said. He has earned five caps for Bafana Bafana and he's expected to be part of the squad at the 2025 CAF Africa Cup of Nations later this year in Morocco. Lucas Ribeiro set to exit Mamelodi Sundowns? Brazilian star walks

Lucas Ribeiro Costa has shocked Mamelodi Sundowns supporters by abruptly leaving the club's pre-season camp in Rustenburg on Saturday. According to FARPost , the in-demand forward requested to exit the camp as negotiations over a potential move reached an advanced stage. Sundowns are currently fine-tuning preparations at Royal Marang ahead of the 2025/2026 season. They will open their campaign on Sunday evening with a high-stakes MTN8 quarter-final clash against Richards Bay FC at Lucas Moripe Stadium. Ribeiro, a front-runner for the Footballer of the Year award, has become a crucial figure in the Sundowns' setup since his arrival in June 2023. His stellar performances helped Masandawana clinch an unprecedented eighth consecutive league title, with the Brazilian clocking 25 goal contributions in 51 appearances. Having resumed training on 21 July following their FIFA Club World Cup run, the team returned to Chloorkop before heading to Rustenburg. However, just days into camp, Ribeiro requested to leave, a move that may signal a looming transfer. 'Negotiations for his potential transfer are at an advanced stage,' source confirmed. Ribeiro's stock has soared following a breakout performance at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, where he scored a dazzling solo goal against Borussia Dortmund — later crowned Goal of the Tournament. His displays have drawn attention from top clubs in Qatar, France, and Belgium. However, Brazilian giants Fluminense have emerged as front-runners. The 33-time Campeonato Carioca champions recently banked £15 million (approximately R350 million) from the sale of Colombian star Jhon Arias. And appear eager to reinvest in Ribeiro. Interestingly, Arias also impressed at the Club World Cup before Fluminense bowed out in the semi-finals against Chelsea. A trajectory that Ribeiro seems to be mirroring. Sundowns' decision to grant Ribeiro leave from the Rustenburg camp could serve as a major hint that the club is preparing for life without him. His availability for Sunday's showdown now hangs in the balance. Should Lucas Ribeiro leave Sundowns for greener pastures? Let us know by leaving a comment below or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
