HUBANESWAR/BALASORE: Burns over 70% of the body are life-threatening. The victim had more than 90%, said Dr Dillip Kumar Parida, medical superintendent of AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
"She arrived dehydrated. Her urine had stopped. Respiratory burns had damaged her lungs. We tried hard. But the chances were always slim," Dr Parida added.
Odisha chief minister (CM) Mohan Charan Majhi has announced Rs 20 lakh in interim compensation for the family and promised the "strictest action" against those responsible for the student's self-immolation.
The young woman had filed a formal police complaint on July 1 against an assistant professor for sexual harassment, a day after first reporting the matter to the college principal and tagging state authorities in a social media post.
The college's students had been protesting since then, demanding action. The day of her self-immolation marked the eighth day of agitation.
Medical experts said that the severity of her injuries worsened when she ran while on fire, intensifying the burns. "In such cases, the first six hours are critical," said Dr Parida. "But she reached our facility four-and-a-half hours after the act. By then, it was already too late."
The student's death sparked a public reckoning over emergency response and fire safety awareness. Former chief fire officer Bhabagrahi Ghadei said that spraying water and covering her with a thick, wet cloth could have minimised the flames. "Rolling her on the ground or covering her would have saved her from deeper burns," he added.
Police have arrested the accused faculty member and the principal, who allegedly tried to pressure the student into withdrawing her complaint.

A fact-finding committee has been set up by UGC, while governor and university chancellor Hari Babu Kambhampati vowed "uncompromising punishment".
The student's father is a clerk at a govt women's college. He stood near her pyre, trying to make sense of it all. "My daughter was a self-defence master trainer, disaster management trainee, best actress winner, poet, and social worker. Why would she take such an extreme step?" he asked.
"If the investigation had started earlier, maybe she would still be here." "She wanted to become a politician. I always wanted her to come home in a convoy, but she came in a hearse," her brother added.

85 Rescued By Visakhapatnam Cops After Crackdown On Human Trafficking Racket
Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam Police has rescued 85 individuals and arrested 22 in a major crackdown on human trafficking and cybercrime operations, Dr. Shankabrata Bagchi, Visakhapatnam Police Commissioner announced on Wednesday. These criminal networks primarily targeted the Southeast Asian nations like Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos, preying on the aspirations of Indian youth seeking lucrative overseas employment. "Cybercrime police have arrested a gang involved in illegal human trafficking for cybercrimes, ensuring the safety of innocent victims," stated Commissioner Bagchi, emphasising the department's commitment to public safety. The Commissioner highlighted a disturbing trend where promising advertisements for "data entry jobs in air-conditioned rooms" with high salaries and minimal educational requirements lure unsuspecting young individuals into a trap. These victims, predominantly unemployed youth, are then trafficked to countries like Cambodia, Myanmar, and Bangkok, where they are coerced into working for China-based cyber scam companies. How Cops Cracked It A recent breakthrough occurred on July 14, 2025, when police apprehended an agent named Suresh from Gajuwaka and his accomplice, Adilakshmi alias Anu, at Visakhapatnam Airport. They were attempting to send four young men and women to Cambodia under the false pretense of data entry jobs. Investigations revealed that Suresh, who had previously worked in a scam company in Cambodia, had returned to India and, with the assistance of Vijay Kumar alias Sunny and Adilakshmi, had already trafficked 12 individuals. From them, police seized two cell phones, Rs 50,000 in cash, $2,000 (Rs 1.80 lakh), and 20 SIM cards. Police investigations indicate that Vijay Kumar alias Sunny acts as the primary agent for China-based scam companies in Cambodia, specifically targeting Telugu-speaking youth from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. He uses local agents to entice unemployed individuals with false promises of employment. According to police intelligence, approximately 500 individuals from North Andhra have travelled to Cambodia and Myanmar on visiting visas. While some are genuine victims, the authorities believe others are intentionally involved in cybercrimes and have become agents themselves, recruiting more unemployed youth from India. Commissioner Bagchi issued a stern warning to fake agents and consultancies, stating that strict action will be taken under the Emigration Act-1983 against those deceiving the public. He emphasised that legitimate agents must hold a valid registration certificate, adhere to the Protection of Immigration Act, and refrain from overcharging or appointing sub-agents. Unregistered or fraudulent agents promising foreign jobs face immediate legal action and arrest. Public Advisory Issued A public advisory was also issued, urging citizens to verify agents' credentials on and to report suspicious activities or demands for high fees to the Visakhapatnam CP's special number 7995095799. Victims of scams are advised to call 1930 to file a complaint. Furthermore, an advisory to parents/guardians urged them to verify the activities of their children or relatives working in China-related scam companies in Cambodia, Myanmar, or Bangkok. "If they are involved in criminal activities, advise them to return to the country immediately. Otherwise, file a complaint with the City Police Commissioner," Dr. Bagchi urged. He warned that failure to comply could result in a Lookout Circular (LOC) and legal action, with information gathering coordinated via the Indian Embassy. "In this era where small hopes lead to big scams... Caution is protection. Stay alert - Don't get scammed - Stay aware," the Visakhapatnam Police Commissioner said, reiterating the urgency of public awareness and cooperation in combating these sophisticated criminal operations.

Drugs factory busted; chemicals seized, kingpin held
Dehradun: The Uttarakhand Police have claimed to have busted an international drugs gang after it raided a factory engaged in making MDMA in the Nanakmatta area of the Udham Singh Nagar district and arrested a man operating it, officials said. State police chief Deepam Seth told reporters here on Tuesday that the raid was conducted by a joint team of the Kumaon unit of the STF's Anti-Narcotics Task Force and Pithoragarh, Champawat, and Udham Singh Nagar police. In the raid carried out on Monday, the team seized a large consignment of banned 'precursor' chemicals used in making MDMA while Kunal Ram Kohli, the brain behind the factory on Sahni Nursery Tiraha, was arrested, the director general of police said. He claimed the activities of the gang spread from Mumbai to Nepal. As much as 126 litres of chemicals, 28 kg of powder, and 7.41 grams of prepared MDMA were seized from the factory, Seth said. According to Senior Superintendent of Police of Uttarakhand STF, Navneet Singh Bhullar, two suspected drug smugglers were arrested on May 31 in Maharashtra's Thane with 11 grams of MDMA. He said that during interrogation, the two revealed the presence of the MDMA factory, being run by Monu Gupta and Kunal Kohli in the Thal area of Pithoragarh district on the Uttarakhand-Nepal border. On this information, Thane and Pithoragarh police raided the factory, being run under the guise of a poultry farm in Thal on June 26, from where they recovered 'precursor' chemicals. Bhullar said that although the Thane police later arrested Monu Gupta, along with his two accomplices, Bhim Yadav and Aman Kohli from the Palia-Nepal border in Lakhimpur Kheri of Uttar Pradesh, Kunal Kohli remained at large, having fled to Nepal along with his accomplices -- Rahul Kumar and Vikram. Police arrested Rahul Kumar's wife, Isha, on July 11 while she was about to dispose of 5.688 kg of MDMA worth Rs 10.23 crore into a canal on the instructions of her husband. During interrogation, she gave up her husband, who was arrested by Champawat police. During interrogation, Aman Kohli told police that when his Pithoragarh factory was exposed, he shifted the operation to Nanakmatta. Bhullar said action will also be taken against the companies from which the chemicals for MDMA were procured. The DGP has announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh to the police team involved in the action.

Bareilly man gets life term for murder over love affair
Bareilly: A local court has sentenced a 24-year-old man to life imprisonment for murdering another person over a love affair three years ago. Additional Sessions Judge Tabrez Ahmed also imposed a Rs 1 lakh fine on the convict Karan Valmiki for killing Jhammanlal, 22. Additional District Government Counsel Rajeshwari Gangwar said the incident took place on the night of August 22, 2022. Jhammanlal's body was found the next day on a garbage heap outside the village, with rope marks on his neck and scratch injuries on his torso. His brother Madanlal lodged an FIR on August 23. Initially, suspicion fell on three locals -- Pradeep, Sanjeev, and Sunil -- after Madanlal said Jhammanlal had argued with them over a mobile phone. However, the three were cleared during police questioning, Gangwar said. She said the trio revealed that Valmiki was in a relationship with a village girl, and Jhammanlal had also been speaking to her, which Valmiki disliked. When questioned, Valmiki initially misled police but later confessed, admitting, 'I made a big mistake. I didn't think it would be discovered.' Investigations found Jhammanlal had objected to Valmiki's affair, even complaining to the girl's brother and warning Valmiki he would catch him red-handed. On the night of the murder, after a drunken altercation at Sunil's house, Valmiki threw Jhammanlal to the ground and strangled him with a rope, killing him on the spot. 'The court found Valmiki guilty based on the evidence and witness testimony and awarded him life imprisonment,' Gangwar added.
