SBS strengthens commitment to inclusion with new commissioning guidelines

SBS has launched new Commissioning Inclusion Guidelines (2025-2028), reaffirming the broadcaster's commitment to ensuring all Australians see themselves and their communities represented in its commissioned content.
The guidelines outline comprehensive multi-year targets for inclusion of talent from historically and ongoing under-represented communities in roles across SBS-commissioned programs, including internal productions.* They include strengthened targets aimed at addressing gaps in industry representation on and off screen, and continue five decades of SBS's leadership in authentically reflecting Australia and driving industry change.
'At SBS, inclusion is central to who we are as an organisation, and underpins how we commission and create content,' said Kathryn Fink, SBS Director of Television.
'Our previous guidelines set a new benchmark for representation in our sector, and our new Commissioning Inclusion Guidelines for 2025-2028 continue to support our ambition, and SBS's unique purpose as a network.
'We believe that an industry without barriers to having your voice heard is essential to fuelling the ongoing success of Australian storytelling – both at home, and globally. Our goal is to drive meaningful, long-term industry change by investing in the depth and breadth of Australian talent, on and off screen. We're proud to continue working closely with production partners across the sector to deliver a truly authentic portrayal of contemporary Australia through the stories we commission, and the people who bring them to life,' she added.
The launch of the SBS Commissioning Inclusion Guidelines (2025-2028) follows the conclusion of SBS's first Commissioning Equity & Inclusion Guidelines (2021-2024), with SBS successfully achieving all of its targets, which were then extended a year while the next iteration was developed.
SBS's guidelines aim to remove barriers when casting on-screen talent and hiring off-screen crew, and focus on representation of people from five key under-represented groups – First Nations peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, LGBTQ+ people, people with disability, and women – based on what Australia looks like today.
In the new guidelines, SBS has updated benchmarks for people with disability and introduced a new sub-target for non-European culturally and linguistically diverse communities. These updates recognise areas where improvement is needed across the sector. SBS's guidelines were also informed by industry engagement and consultation, as well as taking on board SBS's previous performance, and analysis of population and industry data.
SBS's Scripted and Unscripted commissioned programs have targets for on- and off-screen roles, and for career progression, on a show-by-show basis. In measuring this, SBS will also track how it is representing key groups across its entire commissioned content slate.
SBS's commitment to transparency and accountability continues with its new guidelines, with public reporting each year to measure and update on progress. SBS also continues to invest in initiatives providing meaningful career opportunities and pathways for under-represented talent and enriched storytelling. These opportunities, and more information about the guidelines, are available on the SBS website.
* SBS's Commissioning Inclusion Guidelines do not apply to SBS's News and Current Affairs and Sports programming. Targets do not apply to NITV productions which have their own unique equity goals, as outlined in the NITV Commissioning Guidelines.

Restless Dance Theatre takes the arts to the end of a hospital bed with The Lensical

Inside a hospital room at the Adelaide Women's and Children's Hospital, the lights are dimmed and voices gentle. A small, smiling figure is tucked in white sheets in a bed at the centre of the room, his parents in chairs by his side. In the low light, the boy's eyes are bright and open wide, watching intently as dancers in white boilersuits quietly enter the room. They bring with them a very curious structure. It's large and about a metre-and-a-half long. There's a face-sized hole at one end, extending out into an octagonal shape at the other — and it's designed to hover over the hospital bed. For the patient, the device blocks from sight the hospital setting, and headphones playing music replace the sound of whirring medical machines. And so the unconventional stage is set for a first-of-its-kind performance, especially designed for long-term patients in hospital. This performance, and the device, is called The Lensical. And it's been years in the making. "The work is about delivering a unique, special experience to people who may not otherwise be able to experience that at that time," choreographer Michelle Heaven says. The work aims to create "something magical" that can shift the space for a patient, "even if it is just for a short period". Bhodi Hudson, a dancer in the performance, describes the Lensical object as like "a road cone or a megaphone, but it's on its side ... and you're looking through it". "It is essentially a ginormous cone where the patient in a hospital bed gets to view it," he says. "It's like a personal viewing experience, like you're watching something on a screen but it's there in reality. It's oddly very surreal yet fascinating when you're seeing it first hand." For around four minutes, performers from Restless Dance Theatre, an acclaimed company made up of dancers with and without disabilities, move in and out of this frame, performing enchanting choreography. In response, the small boy becomes animated, doing wiggly, dancing movements as he sits up in his bed looking through the giant lens. The innovative Lensical concept was devised by Heaven in collaboration with her partner, theatre designer Ben Cobham. They've made a lot of theatre together over the years, and Cobham himself was a long-term patient in hospital when he was a kid. "We [wanted] to do something for kids that are like he was when he was little," Heaven says. "He spent close to a year in hospital and one of the things that brought him relief was to watch the fish in the fish tank, their organic movements. "This was also pre-screens and phones that are very prevalent now, which also provide a form of escape, but we [were] wanting to offer a human interaction and not always be so reliant on screens for distraction … to be immersed in something that's really directly shared between people." They arrived at the idea of a performance located at the end of a patient's bed that could "change the environment for them momentarily". Many stages of development and testing followed until the pair arrived at the uplifting and immersive Lensical project. Initial trials took place at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne, where they learnt about hospital codes and infection control. They did additional trials at Adelaide's Flinders Medical Centre and Women's and Children's Hospital, refining the work to both evoke delight and meet strict hospital protocols. And the choreography came with specific constraints too: the piece needed to be able to be performed in the very narrow space at the end of a hospital bed. "There's not a lot of room and we need to be mindful of staff needing to get past to attend to other patients … so it's a very different environment to consider," Heaven says. "There's a lot of different needs here, and … we really try and gently navigate that and be very respectful of it." Hudson, who is autistic, is used to shows on a stage, and describes performing in the restricted space as "tricky". "You may be a little bit squeezed in … You have to make sure you're at the right tempo all the while making sure you're not smacking your partner in the face. You may also give way to other people who need to get [through]." But the contorting effort is worth it for Hudson, who says the work is "funky … not smelly, [but] fun funky". In the sequence he performs with fellow Restless dancer Sidney Debba, the pair hold cloths and perform choreography based around pretending to clean an invisible window at the end of the Lensical. "It's like a fantasy sequence in a film where someone just dances to music [doing] the most mundane thing, like someone dancing with a broom like it's a partner," Hudson says. Dancers perform two short works, Heaven explains. "One is quite light and fun and literally makes particularly the younger ones giggle … That's really magical. And the other work is quite transporting, you are immersed in something; it's quite special. "We might just bring the hands in for a moment, or something else might come into frame you might not expect … It's very non-threatening and brings your attention to detail and creates a human connection." Across four days at two different hospitals, the troupe moves quietly through different wards, the Lensical rolling into the rooms of patients who are keen to see the visiting spectacle. Heaven says seeing the work properly performed for the first time, as part of Adelaide's DreamBIG Children's Festival, has been a moving experience. At Adelaide Women's and Children's Hospital and Flinders Medical Centre, they performed the short dances to audiences of a wide range of ages, from children between two and 18 years old through to their families — and even staff. "It [was] a moment of relief, like a little reset, people have used that word … and then [they] go on to do what else they have to do that day." Heaven says the main response among patients has been a feeling of calm joy. She's seen some patients moved to tears, "but in a joyful release".

Australian hip hop heroes Hilltop Hoods will make their long-awaited return to the country's biggest stages in February and March next year. The Never Coming Home tour is the latest in a flurry of activity from the award-winning group who next month release Fall From The Light, the first new studio record in six years. The hip hop trailblazers were deluged with 'what about Australia?' comments on social media channels last week from loyal fans when they revealed UK and European tour dates for August ahead of a hometown run. 'Oh, we have heard (all) about it in the comments section which is fine, I understand it – I feel the same with bands that I like,' Suffa said about the protests from local fans. 'It's just the way that it worked out with the physics, the Northern Hemisphere summer, the rotation around the sun and the Gregorian calendar; it's nothing personal.' Suffa, Pressure and DJ Debris will kick off the tour at the MyState Bank Arena in Hobart on February 14 and then head to the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on February 21, Sydney's Qudos Bank Arena on February 28, Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena on March 7, Brisbane Entertainment Centre on March 14 and RAC Arena, Perth on March 21. The hip hop group is one of the biggest Aussie artists of all time, with more than 1.3 billion streams on Spotify alone and one million records sold over the past two decades. They hold the record for the most tickets sold by an Australian artist at Qudos Bank Arena, with more than 15,000 fans rocking the foundations of the venue during the Great Expanse tour in 2019. Suffa said 'a lot happened' to force the long break between albums and tours, although they have kept the fan fires burning with a succession of singles including So Good?, Show Business and Laced Up. 'I had two young children and a cavoodle, so I had my hands full. And Dan had a young lass as well just before lockdowns. We had young families, Covid happened and a bunch of false starts,' Suffa said. 'It sucked at the time, but I think like as far as the album goes, it was good for it in the long run because we shed a lot of the fat.' Hoods fans were recently shocked by the group's video for their recent single Don't Happy, Be Worry – because it featured Suffa with hair for the first time in his career. And no, he hasn't had a transplant – he just always hid under a cap. 'That's my real head! That's the only film clip I've ever done without a hat and the amount of people that have said to me, 'I thought you were bald!' I just wear a hat which means I constantly have hat hair,' Suffa said.
