Crime intelligence head Lt-Gen Dumisani Khumalo arrested at airport
Henry Mamothame, from the National Prosecuting Authority's investigative directorate, confirmed the arrest to TimesLIVE.
'Yes, he has been arrested, but we cannot provide details until he and others appear in court,' Mamothame said.
Police commissioner Gen Fannie Masemola also confirmed in an interview on Newzroom Afrika that Khumalo has been arrested.
'He called me and informed me he has been arrested, but I have no details of why he has been arrested,' Masemola said.
Other police sources, who cannot be named, told TimesLIVE the arrest was linked to corruption.
Ian Cameron, chair of parliament's police portfolio committee, also confirmed the arrest.
'The arrest of SAPS divisional commissioner for crime intelligence Lt-Gen Khumalo sends more shock waves through the policing community in South Africa. Just a few weeks after another general (Lushaba) was also arrested,' Cameron said.
'This development again raises serious concern about the integrity and leadership crisis in SAPS senior management. I repeat: a skills audit, integrity audit and urgent review of management is essential.'
Earlier Cameron said the 'imminent arrest' of Khumalo relates to 'serious allegations, including irregular appointments and the looting of SAPS crime intelligence slush funds'.

SAPS recruitment: Over 67 000 applications received in 24 hours
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that it received over 67 000 applications within 24 hours for the Basic Police Learning Development Programme (BPLDP) through its e-recruitment system. The SAPS launched the e-recruitment system on Monday, 30 June, as it seeks 5 500 new trainees to join its ranks. For the first time in history, the SAPS is utilising an Electronic Recruitment System, through which youth from all walks of life can submit their applications to be considered for the entry-level police trainee posts. SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the shift to a digital platform is expected to reduce paperwork, curb corruption and nepotism, and prevent lost applications. It is also expected to enhance fairness, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and improve the integrity and speed of the recruitment process. Mathe said the nationwide recruitment drive begins today, 30 June, with online applications closing on 18 July. It targets young men and women aged 18 to 35 to join as police trainees for the 2025/2026 financial year. 'Qualifying young men and women without criminal records and/or pending criminal cases are encouraged to apply by visiting then select the e-Recruitment portal from the drop down menu. 'It is worth mentioning that the SAPS will implement a targeted recruitment process to identify and consider applicants with specific skills and/or qualifications, i.e., Graduates in Law, Policing, Criminology, Law Enforcement, Forensic Investigation, and Information Technology, for placement in the specialised environments such as the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), Detective and Forensic Services as well as Crime Intelligence (CI),' she explained. Additionally, applicants will be subjected to a rigorous selection process, which entails: psychometric, integrity, physical fitness assessments, and fingerprint/vetting screening as well as medical evaluations to ensure that the SAPS enlist disciplined, energetic, intelligent, physically and mentally fit individuals, dedicated to serving their country through Policing, Unsurprisingly, the website is experiencing a delayed response due to traffic volumes. 5,500 police trainee applications go online for first time
Successful candidates will undergo a nine-month training programme and be paid a monthly stipend of R4,500. SAPS said it will implement a targeted recruitment process to identify and consider applicants with specific qualifications to be placed in specialised areas. 'Graduates in law, policing, criminology, law enforcement, forensic investigation and information technology, can apply for placement in the specialised environments such as the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (the Hawks), detective and forensic services, as well as crime intelligence.' Through President Cyril Ramaphosa's SAPS Project 10,000 initiative, 30,393 young people have been trained to become police officers in the past three years. The arrest is part of an ongoing investigation that started in November 2024, in which 11 suspects were initially arrested. Of those, 10 suspects were subcontractors and released due to a lack of evidence, while one municipal worker remains in custody and is scheduled for a court appearance on August 8, 2025. "We are making inroads because essential infrastructure theft, as we know, cripples the economy of the country. It also cripples the households, where we run into a shortage of electricity, where this infrastructure is supposed to be taken to the right places, they are transferred somewhere else, in terms of thefts," he said. Thine said transformer theft was not a new occurrence in the metro, adding that while this case involving a large sum was specific to Tshwane, smaller transformer thefts had been reported in other areas. Criminal acts such as theft and sabotage not only endanger public safety but also place unnecessary strain on municipal resources and disrupt essential services," Mashigo said. He said the arrests represent an important step towards ensuring accountability and deterrence. "Our residents deserve uninterrupted services and infrastructure that is secure from deliberate damage and sabotage. As the matter is now being handled within the justice, crime prevention, and security cluster, the city will refrain from further comment at this stage to avoid compromising ongoing investigations," he said.
