Bryce Harper Offers High Praise on Phillies Jesus Luzardo's Dominating 2025 Season

Yahoo21-05-2025
The Philadelphia Phillies have a ton of great starting pitchers within the organization. But the one taking the team and the league by storm is the most recent addition in Jesus Luzardo.
After Luzardo's strong six innings against the Colorado Rockies, Phillies superstar Bryce Harper had high praise for Luzardo.

In a post-game interview courtesy of NBC Sports Philadelphia, Harper said, "He's super smart out there, he just throws what he wants to, he knows how to pitch... It's super impressive."
Harper's praise of Luzardo comes after his outing against the Rockies, where he lowered his season ERA to 1.95 and raised his season WAR to 2.9, the highest among all pitchers in baseball.
The praise for Luzardo didn't stop there. Harper mentioned how glad he was that Luzardo is on the Phillies, and how he remembers facing Luzardo when he was with the Miami Marlins.

"I've said it a million times, I'm glad he's on our team," Harper said. "We've faced him multiple times when he was in Miami, and it was always a tough game for us."

During Luzardo's time in Miami, he faced the Phillies six times. In those six appearances, Luzardo had a 3.25 ERA, a 3 and 1 record, 45 strikeouts, and 36 innings pitched. His average start against the Phillies went 6 innings with 7.5 strikeouts.
No longer having to go against Luzardo is a good thing for the Phillies. He's pitched fairly well against Philadelphia and would've given the Phillies a challenge during the 2025 season if they hadn't traded for him.
Luzardo's addition to the team is massive, especially considering the injuries to Aaron Nola and Ranger Suarez. Zack Wheeler is the team's ace, but Luzardo is giving him a run for his money with such a dominant start to the year.
His incredible start has Luzardo in the CY Young conversation, even being ranked first atop ESPN's CY Young Prediction site.

Harper, and likely the rest of the Phillies organization, is glad they no longer have to face Luzardo.

Phillies send Johan Rojas, Daniel Robert to minors to make room for Jhoan Duran, Harrison Bader

The Philadelphia Phillies optioned outfielder Johan Rojas and reliever Daniel Robert to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Friday to make room for newly acquired Harrison Bader and Jhoan Duran. Rojas, a 24-year-old light-hitting center fielder known for his speed and defense, is hitting .224/.280/.289 in 71 games with a .569 OPS and .58 OPS+, which means he was 42 points below the average MLB hitter. Robert, 30, was the first of at least a couple of bullpen moves expected within the coming weeks. The Phillies acquired Robert in a trade with the Texas Rangers on May 1 and posted a 5.79 ERA in 12 games across two stints with the club this season. Duran will slot into the Phillies' bullpen as their closer, a role the team hasn't had since Rob Thomson took over as manager. During his tenure as manager, Thomson has been reluctant to name any reliever a set closer. Instead, he used his late-inning relievers based on pockets of the lineup and matchups. Thomson and president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski have already said Duran will be the club's closer. Duran will wear No. 59 with the Phillies. Thomson changed his number to No. 49. "The only one who is upset at this point is my wife because all of her merchandise has 59 on it," Thomson said, adding he chose No. 49 to select his "buddy" Ron Guidry. David Robertson, whom the Phillies signed to a one-year contract last month, can join the team as early as Tuesday. Bader isn't in the Phillies' lineup for tonight's game against the Detroit Tigers. Max Kepler is playing left field against the Tigers, who are starting righty Jack Flaherty. "My intention is to go out there and play my brand of baseball. Just be myself. It's really the only thing I know how to do, both on and off the field. I'm just going to help this team win," Bader said Friday. "Like we all know, I've been injected into a playoff race and all the notions of ego are me, me and my playing time. That will go out the window. I'm here to win. I'm here to help this team win. I want a shot at the World Series." Thomson said for the time being, the Phillies will have a double platoon in center and left field: Bader and Brandon Marsh in CF and Kepler and Otto Kemp in LF. Here's tonight's full lineup: The Phils will induct Jimmy Rollins and Ed Wade into their Wall of Fame before Friday's game. The club is recommending fans be in their seats at 6 p.m., when the ceremony starts.

For Phillies Prospect Justin Crawford, The Time Is Now

It may be time for the Phillies to call up prospect Justin Crawford. (Photo by Bailey O'Neill/Minor League Baseball via Getty Images) Minor League Baseball via Getty Come on, Phillies, it's time to call the kid up. The kid being Justin Crawford, the 21-year-old who's conquering Triple-A this season. Crawford's call-up would come off the heels of a trade-deadline performance that left Phillie-Land feeling a little blah. Yes, the Phils nabbed a checkmate closer (Jhoan Duran). But the other key piece that they acquired (Harrison Bader) was a letdown, especially after it looked like Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski was shoving in all his chips after the Duran deal. Philly fans craved Eugenio Suarez or Steven Kwan or even an underperforming toolshed like Luis Robert, but Bader it is — a 31-year-old journeyman outfielder who wields a slick glove but weak bat, although his offensive production has sprung up in 2025. There's someone else the fanbase is craving: Crawford, who has earned a promotion after slashing .325/.411/.426 with 33 stolen bases at Lehigh Valley this season. He hits lefties (.364); he hits righties (.316); and scouts say his breathtaking speed gives his future Gold Glove potential. Here's the kid making dazzling catch/break-dancing move in spring training: Publicly, Dombrowski has kept it noncommittal on Crawford, telling The Athletic on Thursday, 'We think he's ready to play at the big-league level. We could bring him up. If we do bring him up, he needs to play a lot. I'm not sure that we're in a position to do that at this point today. But he's not somebody that we would hesitate to bring up, if we decided that was the right thing to do. 'He, like (Andrew) Painter, like a lot of those youngsters, they can use more development time. It will never hurt them... But he's also in a position where we think he's ready to do that when called upon.' Former Phillies GM and current broadcaster Ruben Amaro said on The Phillies Show that dropped Friday that he had expected Crawford to be on the team by August 1, saying, 'I thought for sure that Crawford would be in the big leagues playing everyday in centerfield.' Amaro predicts Crawford's call-up is imminent. "He will be in centerfield, and (Brandon) Marsh and Bader are going to platoon in left, and (Nick) Castellanos will be in right... And I think that's the way it's going to go, and sometime soon,' Amaro added The casualties of Bader's arrival and Crawford's promotion will be Max Kepler and Johan Rojas. Kepler will probably get released (see Whit Merrifield, 2024) and Rojas, who still has options, will get sent to Lehigh Valley. Bader alone isn't a massive upgrade but pairing his arrival with Crawford's promotion would create a buzz. It would also give hope that the outfield's offense could see incremental gains in both left and center, which wouldn't be hard to do considering how feeble Kepler (.203/.297/.357) and Rojas (.224/.280/.289) have been this year. Calling up Crawford could also provide a much-needed offensive spark, along with providing a youthful exuberance, which would spice up a team packed with businesslike veterans. And the only way to find out is for the Phillies to call the kid up.

Musikfest, Phillies alumni weekend, Lord Huron, 2nd Street Festival: Things to do in Philly this weekend

The weekend is here, and Philadelphia is more than ready for it! From Phillies alumni celebrations in South Philly to a Grammy Award-winning artist performing down in South Jersey, there's something on the docket for everyone this weekend. Musikfest 2025 is also officially underway in Bethlehem, as is BlackStar Film Festival in the City of Brotherly Love. That's just a teaser for an incredibly vibrant weekend in the Philadelphia region. Here's what else is going on. A sure sign of summer is back in the Lehigh Valley — it's Musikfest 2025! This 10-day festival in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, is nothing short of action-packed, featuring performances by A-list headlining acts like country musicians Riley Green and Darius Rucker, as well as iconic bands like Third Eye Blind and The Black Keys. The festival hosts over 500 free performances for the public across 15 stages, plus 11 ticketed headliner shows. Beyond the music, this summer scene is a celebration of the arts, food and creativity. The festival kicked off on Thursday night with a plethora of performances, including a set by Megan Moroney. Friday will be headlined by Riley Green, Saturday by The Avett Brothers, and Sunday by Darius Rucker. A full schedule for the festival is available online. A big weekend is here for the Phillies: a celebration of a core member of their golden era, the GM who helped build the team's 2008 World Series team, honoring Hall of Fame slugger Dick Allen, a premier pitching matchup and Sunday Night Baseball. The Phillies will kick off alumni weekend Friday night by inducting Jimmy Rollins and Ed Wade into the team's Wall of Fame. The Phils expect 54 alumni to be in town this weekend for their series against the Detroit Tigers. Friday could also be the first game fans get to see new closer Jhoan Duran and outfielder Harrison Bader in a Phillies uniform. Before Saturday's game, the Phillies will have an on-field presentation celebrating Allen's induction into the Hall of Fame. Saturday also features one of the most intriguing pitching matchups in baseball: Zack Wheeler (9-4, 2.56) vs. Tarik Skubal (10-3, 2.09). The Phils close out the three-game series with a Sunday Night Baseball appearance. Tickets are available on the Phillies' website and third-party sites like StubHub and SeatGeek. If you speak fluent subtitles or smell popcorn in your dreams, this one's for you. The 14th annual BlackStar Film Festival, with a "one of a kind celebration of Black, Brown and Indigenous filmmaking," is back for another year this weekend. The festival will take place in person and virtually through Sunday at various theaters, including the Kimmel Center, the Wilma Theater and the Suzanne Roberts Theatre. Tickets for an in-person bundle are $80. The virtual bundle is $30. There is also an all-access pass for $350 and a virtual pass for $150. It's showtime at the Academy of Music this weekend. Beat the heat at the nation's oldest opera house this weekend to see "Beetlejuice." This Broadway hit brings Tim Burton's cult classic to life and will have you laughing your way into the afterlife. The show's final performances run Friday through Sunday with showtimes running from 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets start at $36. This is your last chance to catch the ghost with the most — for now. Peaches might make your throat a little itchy, but let's be honest, we're all ignoring that for a great time this weekend (and another slice of peach cobbler). Get ready for a weekend full of sweet summer fun during the Peach Festival at Peddler's Village in New Hope. Packed with peachy treats, live music and beautiful strolls from Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Shops will stay open until 8 p.m. Saturday. Admission and parking are free. Indie rock band Lord Huron is bringing the summer night feels to The Mann in West Philly this Friday. Soul singer Lee Fields will join Lord Huron as the group brings their latest album, "The Cosmic Selector Vol. 1," to the City of Brotherly Love. Doors to the show open at 6 p.m., showtime is set for 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Tickets to see the new album on tour start at $62. Ashanti, a woman wearing many hats, including being a new mom, will be in our area this weekend. The Grammy award-winning songstress will be at the Ovation Hall at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City on Friday. The Glen Cove, Long Island, New Yorker made Billboard history by having her first three chart entries land in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time, according to the Ocean Casino Resort website. Tickets range from $56 to $133. Prices can change. The show starts at 9 p.m. and the doors open at 8 p.m. Another New Yorker, DJ Skribble, is also on the lineup. Oh, oh, oh-oh, oh — Nickelodeon fans are sure to know where we're going with this one. Those opening words are the theme song to this weekend because boy band Big Time Rush is coming to town! BTR will take the stage at The Mann on Saturday night and be joined by none other than Stephen Kramer Glickman, AKA Gustavo Rocque, and Katelyn Tarver, who played Jo Taylor, Kendall Schmidt's girlfriend. The band's last album dropped in 2023, but they've recently released a new single, "I Want You Here All The Time." Big Time Rush is set to play every song from every episode of their former Nickelodeon television show, "Big Time Rush." Fans can get in the spirit by listening to the 2025 IRL Tour Setlist. Doors to the concert open at 5:30 p.m., showtime is 7 p.m. Tickets to see this epic reunion start at $42.45. The Goo Goo Dolls will be in West Philadelphia this weekend with the Dashboard Confessional for the Summer Anthem Tour 2025. The rock band will be performing at the TD Pavilion at The Mann on Sunday, rain or shine. Formed by John Rzeznik and Robby Takac in Buffalo, New York, in 1986, Goo Goo Dolls have quietly broken records, contributed a string of staples to the American songbook, connected to millions of fans, and indelibly impacted popular music for three-plus decades, according to The Mann website. Tickets range from $49 to $244. The show is expected to start at 7:30 p.m. and doors open at 6 p.m. Ginuwine, Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter, will be in the Fishtown area this weekend. No need to get "So Anxious." Born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Maryland, Ginuwine will be at the Event Center at the Rivers Casino on Saturday. Prices for tickets range from $55.57 to $87.97. "Ginuwine delivers the kind of unforgettable, feel-good experience our guests love," said Shannon Redmond, vice president of marketing at Rivers Casino Philadelphia. "We're excited to bring a true R&B legend to The Event Center for what promises to be a high-energy summer night on the waterfront." The event, in Hall B, will feature a full day of vinyl DJs, live music, vendors, a hearse car show and special guests. Hundreds of vendors will also be on hand selling items like original art, vintage toys, vinyl records, handmade jewelry, books, movies and quirk houseware, just to name a few.
