
Moriah volunteers create Community Garden
PORT HENRY — The town of Moriah has its first vegetable-filled Community Garden on the edge of Witherbee Park.
'It's exciting for the community,' garden volunteer Cathy Sprague said. 'So many people have contributed to make this happen.'
People can take what they need from the garden, especially senior citizens, and they're planting vegetables like tomatoes and cucumbers, Sprague said.
Community gardens are popular in other towns like Keene and North Elba, but so far Moriah has been left out of the fray.
Not anymore, Sprague said.
She said James Curren of Jimmy's Lawn Care brought in topsoil for the garden, Michelle Budwick of Sprout's Greenhouse donated plants, and volunteers Patty Gallagher, Carol Chiarella and co-organizer Jackie Viestenz have been tending it.
'Jackie and the others have been down there planting and watering,' Sprague said. 'Now we're waiting while everything starts growing.'
Sprague said co-organizers Nicole Van Buren and Jackie Viestenz developed the concept of a Moriah Community Garden.
'Nicole brainstormed this,' Sprague said. 'We all loved the idea and everyone got to work.'
Van Buren said the garden is fully planted.
'There will be two different kinds of tomatoes, peas, cucumbers, zucchini and summer squash, lettuce and Swiss chard,' she said. 'This is open to all community members and we are looking for anyone who would like to volunteer for weeding and watering.'
The garden is sponsored by the Moriah Chamber of Commerce, and chamber President The Rev. Ric Lewis said the project could help a lot of people who don't have access to fresh produce.
'It came to be in one of our chamber meetings,' he said. 'We decided to put it into play. Jimmy (Curren) did all the digging and he brought in all the soil.'
The soil was donated by a Dan White of Westport and Spaulding's Farm, he said.
The garden is located in front of the Town Hall, in Witherbee Park, off Park Place behind the Amtrak Train Station.

Can TikTok's ‘Shirtless Race' Become More than a Trend?
NEW YORK — For three days in May, 14,000 men and women stormed New York City's Pier 76, just west of Hudson Yards, many of them in various states of athletic undress — not to party, but certainly to sweat. They were there for what outsiders viewing from TikTok call 'the shirtless race,' and what is known to proponents as Hyrox, a strength-and-endurance fitness race that combines an eight kilometre run with eight functional workouts, including a 330-pound sled drag. Some athletes collapse from exhaustion at the finish line. The last 2024–2025 season attracted over 600,000 participants, who competed in over 80 races worldwide. (Courtesy) Yet, Hyrox has built a devoted and growing global following. Fitness influencer Eric Hinman, NFL tight end Darren Waller and actor Patrick Wilson were among those who competed during the New York event, which had a waitlist, according to Hyrox and its Swiss parent company Infront Sports & Media. The first race, held in 2017 in Hamburg, Germany, drew about 650 participants; the last 2024–2025 season attracted over 600,000, who competed in over 80 races worldwide, culminating in the World Championships in Chicago last week. By combining familiar functional movements like rowing and wall balls with running in an open-entry, festival-like marathon atmosphere, Hyrox has become the latest global fitness craze, with almost equal participation by men (52 percent) and women (48). In the past, millions of everyday gym-goers didn't have anything to work towards besides looking good and getting healthy. 'We gave them a definition [and competition] for what they were already doing,' said Moritz 'Mo' Fürste, who, along with Christian Toetzke, co-founded the company in 2017. ADVERTISEMENT Each athlete paid anywhere from $70 to over $200 to participate. While company reps declined to disclose revenue figures, Fürste shared on a Business of Sport podcast earlier this year that the average entry fee is around €130 ($150), putting its annual ticket sales revenue at roughly $90 million. They also generate revenue from event brand sponsors like Redbull, a constellation of 8,000 gyms that pay up to $150 a month to be its affiliates, spectator tickets and partnerships with brands like Puma, which sells co-branded products at the events, its stores and third-party retail partners. 'There's a real loyalty from participants to support the brands that are involved with Hyrox,' said Erin Longin, Puma's vice president of running and training. With its stickiness and built-in social media appeal, Hyrox has the makings of a spectator sport like a marathon or a triathlon. Still, like any sport, it needs to continually find ways to keep its athletes and audiences engaged to avoid becoming another fleeting fad. Off to the Races Hyrox isn't the first strength-and-endurance race out of the blocks. In the 2010s, cultish CrossFit peaked with 415,000 participants in their 2018 Games, and rugged adventure Spartan Race saw 1.3 million participants each year at its height. But most CrossFit Games participants competed in their local affiliate gyms (called 'boxes'), and most Spartan Races were held in far-flung locations without mass-level audiences. During the pandemic, both saw declines in participation. On the surface, Hyrox follows the same formula, but with accessible twists: Athletes can compete in various division such as singles, doubles and relay teams, allowing different ability levels to take part. The format is also simpler. Unlike other races with their involved scoring systems, whoever finishes Hyrox first wins, and the standardized workouts make it a straightforward race for time. 'There is this repetitive combination of things that you have to do, which makes it stickier,' said Fürste. The challenge of completing the race is a draw, allowing participants to not only compete against one another but their own personal records. 'The endorphins you get from doing something that hard are insanely rewarding, and that sense of accomplishment is worth chasing and repeating,' added Heber Cannon, a fitness filmmaker. Hyrox also stages its events in some of the world's biggest media markets in some of the most picturesque locations — New York's Pier 76, Paris' Grand Palais and Singapore's Marina Bay Sands — where everyday athletes and professionals compete in front of packed crowds and seas of iPhones recording their every move. Fürste said the organic growth in participation coincided with the organic growth on social media too. In the past twenty months, views on Hyrox-related terms have surged 654 percent on TikTok, according to a cultural analytics firm. In the month following its first major co-branded product collection with Puma in January, Puma x Hyrox mentions generated $537,000 in media impact value, said data analytics firm Launchmetrics. ADVERTISEMENT And products from the Puma x Hyrox collection sold out within hours of the New York event opening its doors. 'We almost can't figure out the right stock levels to have at these events, because each event just keeps outdoing the last,' said Longin. Tribe Check Behind the social media hype, Hyrox's growth is driven by its 8,000 (and growing) partner gyms, which Fürste called 'the backbone of its ever-expanding global community.' He explained how Hyrox has, in some ways, solved problems for the crowded traditional gym industry, where many businesses compete for fickle consumers solely based on price and convenience. 'It's very difficult for a gym, usually, to create a strong community,' he said. Most are built for solo experiences and feel outdated in a moment where people are craving more social fitness activities, as evidenced by the rise of running clubs and climbing gyms. Even sportswear giants like Nike are noting the behavioural shift — the US company has begun to open Nike Studios, group fitness gyms designed to foster community workouts, starting with a Southern California location in 2023. When he launched a Hyrox program in his gym in 2021, 'it revitalised the community, and people were talking to each other, and there was culture forming because people were training with purpose,' said Magida. 'There were more high-fives and hugs than ever before.' Within two years of being a Hyrox partner, he saw a 40 percent increase in his business. Ruben Belliard, who runs The Training Lab in New York City — one of the most competitive markets for gyms — saw his membership jump up to 15 percent in the first year after partnering with Hyrox. In his 17 years in the fitness business, he's seen plenty of fitness trends come and go. 'The next evolution is going to be hybrid training like Hyrox,' he said. 'People want to be able to run fast and be strong at the same time, where, typically, in the past, it was one or the other.' For the upcoming season, which starts next month, many races — in Singapore, Sydney, London — have already sold out, often in minutes of being announced. 'I think it's still in that building phase, building awareness, building participation,' said Longin, noting the previous season's awareness wasn't as widespread. Now the company is preparing to scale further to keep up with growing demand by planning to add more cities and race days. 'It's been proven that people will always train for marathons. People will always train for those types of things,' added Vennare. 'But Hyrox needs to make sure to keep its brand and the competition exciting and fun so that people don't get sick of it.'

Your food is full of microplastics—and now we know why
A study published this week delves into the mystery of how the plastic objects we interact with daily shed tiny particles that creep into our bodies, brains and guts. While the scientific focus has long been on how microplastics pollute our environment and impact wildlife, researchers are increasingly raising alarms about how the same contaminants can wreak havoc in the human body. The new research, published in the journal NPJ Science of Food, wove together data from 100 previous papers that studied microplastics, nanoplastics and plastic particles. The results were compiled into an open database published by the Food Packaging Forum, a Swiss nonprofit that examines chemicals in food packaging. Microplastics and nanoplastics are plastic particles in the millimeter to nanometer range, with the latter causing even more concern among scientists because their tiny size makes them able to slip into human cells. 'This is the first systematic evidence map to investigate the role of the normal and intended use of food contact articles in the contamination of foodstuffs with MNPs [microplastics and nanoplastics],' lead author of and Scientific Communication Officer at the Food Packaging Forum Dr. Lisa Zimmermann said. 'Food contact articles are a relevant source of MNPs in foodstuffs; however, their contribution to human MNP exposure is underappreciated.' How we interact with plastic matters The new study looked at a broad range of 'food contact articles' that included water bottles, cutting boards, food processing equipment and packaging ranging from food wrappers to tea bags. Most food packaging contains plastic, even many things that seem like they don't, like the paper that wraps around cold cuts and cheese, cardboard takeout containers and glass bottles and jars, which often have a plastic-coated closure. The authors focused on how everyday objects used as intended can shed microplastics and how that shedding can worsen over the course of repeated interactions. Across 14 different studies, microplastic shedding was found to increase with repeated uses, including screwing a reusable water bottle lid on and off, washing a melamine dish or putting plastic tableware into contact with hot foods 'These findings are relevant for reused plastic [food contact articles] and should be considered when assessing the safety of FCAs across use cycles,' the authors wrote. Based on their research, and its blind spots, they stressed the need for future studies to delve more deeply into how repeated interactions, heating and washing affects how much microplastic is shed by kitchenware and food packaging that most of the world's population might come into contact with countless times each day. The authors also found that the bulk of the research on microplastics focused on only a few kinds of objects that come into contact with food and drinks, like water bottles and tea bags. Similarly, more studies focused on PET and polypropylene over other common plastics, leaving a lot of unknowns about how much plastic is being shed by food packaging made out of other materials. Food and beverage containers can expose the human body to microplastics every time we interact with them but relatively little is still known about how that process works. That mystery is an ominous one considering how ubiquitous plastics are globally in food packaging and preparation and how their presence is increasingly linked to reproductive, digestive and respiratory problems and potentially even colon and lung cancer. Plastics appear to have no trouble finding their way into the human body. Another recent study found that the adult brain can contain a plastic spoon's worth of microplastics and nanoplastics, an amount that's seven to 30 times higher than what might be found in the liver or kidneys. Those kind of findings show that it's imperative for future research to track down how all of that plastic is finding its way into the human body and what exactly it does once it gets there.

Fusion between culture and modernity as children dance in Kenya's refugee camp
KALOBEYEI, Kenya (AP) — Beads of sweat drip from the faces of young girls and boys as they dance to the rhythm of traditional drums and open calabashes, while their peers watch them in awe. These are refugee children, some who were born in one of Africa's largest camps — Kakuma, located in northern Kenya, where more than 300,000 refugees' livelihoods have been affected by funding cuts that have halved monthly food rations. The children use the Acholi traditional dance as a distraction from hunger and have perfected a survival skill to skip lunches as they stretch their monthly food rations that are currently at 30% of the U.N nutritional recommendation per person. The Acholi people, mostly from Uganda and South Sudan, are among refugees who live in Kakuma camp , which was established in 1992 as a safe haven for people fleeing conflict from dozens of east African countries. For a moment, the melodious sound of one of the refugee mothers stops the playground buzz of activity as dozens of children sit down to enjoy the traditional dance performance. The colorful swings doting the community center at Kakuma's Kalobeyei Refugee Settlement were donated by a Swiss organization, Terre des hommes, which still manages the playground aptly named 'Furaha' — Swahili for Happiness. But the happiness of these children isn't guaranteed now as funding cuts have affected operations here. Less resources and fewer staff are available to engage the children and ensure their safety. One of the dancers, Gladis Amwony, has lived in Kakuma for 8 years now. In recent years, she has started taking part in the Acholi traditional dances to keep her Ugandan roots alive. The now 20-year-old doesn't imagine ever going back to Uganda and has no recollection of life in her home village. 'I'm happiest when I dance, I feel connected to my ancestors,' the soft-spoken Amwony says after her dance session. While Amwony and her friends are looking for a cultural connection, just about 5 kilometers (3 miles) from their village in neighboring Kalobeyei Village 3, some boys are in touch with modernity. The five boys have been practicing a one-of-a-kind dance where they mimic robots, complete with face masks that hide their human faces. They make their sharp synchronized moves that they have been perfecting for months. The boys will be part of performances that will be showcased during this year's World Refugee Day, as an example of the talent and resilience that exists among the refugee community. This younger generation of dancers make precision moves in a small hall with play and learning items stored in a cabinet that is branded with an American flag, an indication that it was donated by the U.S government. Such donations are now scarce, with the United States having cut down on funding in March. These cuts have affected operations here, with the future stardom hopes for these children dimming by the day. The center, which previously featured daily programs such as taekwondo and ballet, may not be operational in a few months if the funding landscape remains as is. 'We are now reducing some of the activities because we are few. The staff are few and even per day we only have one staff remaining in the center and it is really hard for him/her to conduct 500 children,' said John Papa, a community officer for Terre des hommes in Kalobeyei Village 3. These programs do more than entertain the children — they keep them away from issues such as child labor, abuse and crime which as a major concern for humanitarian organizations in Kakuma.
