Police probe extortionists demanding R1,000 teacher 'protection fees'
The organised crime unit is investigating who is behind a threatening note discovered last weekend at Dalibhunga Senior Secondary School.
'The note, allegedly from an extortionist group, demands a monthly 'protection fee' of R1,000 from each teacher,' said police spokesperson Brig Nobuntu Gantana.
'Due to the serious and organised nature of the threat the case has been assigned to the provincial organised crime unit for investigation.
'SAPS urges school staff, learners and the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the provincial extortion hotline on 082-387-1561 or Crime Stop at 08600-10111. No arrests have yet been made.'
Acting provincial police commissioner Maj-Gen Thandiswa Kupiso said: 'We are treating this threat with urgency. Extortion targeting educators is an attack on our education system and community stability. The organised crime unit is using all available resources to identify those responsible.'

A man is on the run after allegedly shooting his ex-girlfriend and wife in a double femicide in Lusikisiki. As South Africa marks Women's Month, an Eastern Cape man is wanted for killing his reportedly pregnant ex-girlfriend and then going home and shooting his wife while she slept. A 42-year-old man is wanted for allegedly shooting and killing two women in the Ngobozana area in Lusikisiki on Tuesday. According to reports, the suspect first shot his ex-girlfriend at a tavern in the Chithwayo locality before he then proceeded to his home in Unity Park. He then allegedly shot his wife while she was asleep. The suspect fled the scene in the family's vehicle, which police later discovered abandoned. 26 illegal miners granted bail in Barberton court
Twenty-six of more than 480 people arrested in a major illegal mining crackdown in Barberton have been granted bail. The Barberton magistrate's court on Monday released the 26 on R2,000 bail each after the court considered they had no previous convictions, had fixed addresses and no pending cases. They are among hundreds arrested during a joint operation between Sheba Mine and police on Friday, as part of the ongoing Vala Umgodi operation targeting illegal mining syndicates. The arrests included four juveniles. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said 'they face charges, including trespassing, theft of gold-bearing material and contravention of the Immigration Act'.

Deputy health minister Dhlomo's nephew in court over wife's 2022 death
Deputy health minister Sibongiseni Dhlomo says the death of his nephew's wife Khanyisile Dhlomo has left more questions than answers. He was speaking after his nephew, school principal Khayalethu Dhlomo, 53, made his second court appearance in the Durban magistrate's court in connection with his wife's death. The mother of two teens, who was also a school principal, was found stabbed to death at their Malvern, Joburg home on September 4 2022. At the time of her death, Khayalethu said his wife ended her own life. In a courtroom packed with ANC supporters and family from both sides, senior prosecutor Denise Perumal asked for the matter to be postponed to August 12 for bail. The state is opposed to bail.
