Five from Jharkhand abducted in Niger, kin face endless wait
The migrant workers, all belonging to Jharkhand's Giridih district, are employed with Kalpataru Projects International Limited, a company focused on power transmission and distribution and urban infrastructure projects.
The other abducted workers are Raju Mahto, Chandrika Mahto, Faljit Mahto, and Uttam Mahto. A Niger citizen, Adam, is also among the abducted.
'We took cover in a company bus and tried to drive away, but it got stuck in the sand. Around 70-80 motorcycles were following us, all carrying guns,' Mojilal, now in a company camp and awaiting safe passage home, told The Indian Express.
According to sources in the Ministry of External Affairs, the ministry is aware of the matter and the Mission in Niger is working on it. 'The firing went on for an hour and a half. We managed to escape by slipping into nearby sewage lines but Sanjay, Raju, Faljit, Chandrika, Uttam, and a local from Niger were eventually intercepted by the gunmen. The last thing I saw was Faljit surrendering to the group with his hands raised,' Mojilal said.
Though the armed group involved in the abduction has yet to be identified, the countries of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso have been fighting jihadist insurgency linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State. The abduction came a day after 12 soldiers were killed in an attack near the village of Sakoira in the tri-border region, where the West African Sahel countries of Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali meet.
According to the website of the Indian Embassy in Niger, there are 125 Indian nationals in Niger, mostly engaged in trading and hospitality business.
The families of the men are now faced with what seems like an endless wait. At Sanjay's home in Dondlo village, his wife Soni Devi doesn't know what to tell her two children. 'It's been a week since I last spoke to him, and my children are anguished that their father hasn't spoken to them in days,' she said. 'I have no answer except to say over and over that he'll come soon.'
In the same village, Raju's family wonders if they will ever get a chance to speak to him again. Raju and Sanjay knew each other from before, the family said, having worked in Malaysia and Oman before heading to Niger.
'We have only been informed that the company and their government are conducting a search operation,' Raju's 22-year-old brother Mahesh Kumar said.
When contacted, P Jaganmohan, senior vice-president of Kalpataru Projects International Limited, who oversees the company's operations in West Africa, Central Asia, and South America, said 'nothing like this has ever happened before' in the three years of the company's work in Niger.
'The kidnapped workers have not been traced, and the government is still working on it. Currently, the status quo remains,' he said.
After the news broke, the families of the abducted men approached Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren for intervention, who in turn appealed to the MEA.
In a post on X, he asked External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar 'to please provide help to our migrant brothers from Jharkhand who have been kidnapped in Niger'.
Jharkhand's State Migrant Control Room (SMCR), a body for migrant workers under the state's Department of Labour, Employment, Training and Skill Development, said 'it is in touch with the company' and that all work has been halted for now.
'The company is regularly updating us about the situation. The missing workers are still unaccounted for, and those left will be rescued once safety clearance is obtained,' SMCR head Shikha Lakra said.
As authorities look for the abducted men, other migrant workers are waiting anxiously for a safe passage home. 'We have packed and are ready to leave,' Mojilal said as he and others awaited a word on their return. 'The incident has terrified us.'

West Bengal police launches helpline for migrant workers facing harassment in other States
Amidst reports of targeting of migrant workers from West Bengal in BJP-ruled States, the West Bengal police have started a helpline number for workers to seek assistance. Responding to the development, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari shared his email-id and added that any citizen of the State who is 'harassed by Mamata's police' may reach out to him. The West Bengal police in a social media post stated that they are receiving 'reports from various sources that many people from Bengal, who have gone to work in other states, are facing various problems and instances of harassment'. 'If any citizen from Bengal working in another state faces any kind of trouble, we appeal to them or their family members to immediately inform their local police station. You may also contact the district control room,' the police said in the post. The West Bengal police in the social media post said that the helpline number is 9147727666 which will be available only on WhatsApp and the people can send a message there with the necessary information, including your name and address. 'Each piece of information will be verified, and we will coordinate with the concerned state authorities to take the necessary action,' the police said. According to West Bengal Chief Minister about 1000 migrants from the State were detained in other States. There have been reports of detention of migrant workers in BJP ruled states on allegations of being Bangladeshi nationals. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari called the post by West Bengal police politically motivated to mislead Bengalis residing in various parts of India for work, so that they become alarmed and confused. 'Across the Indian subcontinent, Indian Bengalis and Hindu refugees are not facing any problems. However, Hindu Bengalis living in West Bengal are frequently harassed by the police. I appeal to them—and to Indian Hindus from other states, regardless of the language they speak, who are residing in any district of West Bengal for work—if you have been harassed by the police. (Mamata's police), please feel free to inform me with details via email,' the BJP leader posted on social media. Mr. Adhikari urged any aware citizen of West Bengal, 'if you come across information about Rohingya Muslims or illegal Bangladeshi Muslim infiltrators residing in any district of West Bengal—please share the details with me at this email address My email ID is: adhikarisuvenduwb1@ '. 'I will ensure the information reaches the appropriate authorities,' the LOP said. Mr. Adhikari on Saturday claimed that there are 1.25 crore illegal immigrants in the voters' list of West Bengal, and all of them will be sent back following a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the rolls.

Hapur school sealed, probe ordered as roof collapse leaves 2 students injured
Two students were injured when plaster from the ceiling of a government primary school classroom collapsed in Hapur district, Uttar Pradesh, officials said on Saturday. The school has been sealed, and the district administration has established an inquiry committee to probe the incident. The District Magistrate (DM) of Hapur, Abhishek Pandey told The Indian Express that the incident happened at around 11:30 am, when the plaster from a part of the roof fell down. 'There are a total of 181 students enrolled at the school, and 15 students were present in the classroom at the time. Two children sustained minor injuries. They were taken to a nearby hospital for examination, and after receiving first aid, they were returned to their parents,' the DM Pandey said. According to the police, a team of officials rushed to the spot and removed the debris. 'We were informed about the incident by the Gram Pradhan between 12pm to 1pm and we reached the spot within 15 minutes,' said the Station House Officer, Babu Garh, Mahender Singh. DM Pandey described the incident as serious, noting the issuance of a fitness certificate to the school. 'This is a very serious matter because, at the beginning of each academic session, we conduct a thorough inspection of all the schools in the district and issue a certificate confirming that the school is fit for children to study. We have established an inquiry committee to determine how the fitness certificate was issued to the school in the first place,' said Pandey. He also mentioned that the administration is conducting a district-wide inspection of all schools to verify their status. Once the inquiry committee submits its report, we will review it and take action against those responsible. 'The committee,' he said, 'has been formed under the District Magistrate and includes officials from the Public Works Department as well as officials from the administrative and technical departments. They will be investigating the structural integrity of the building and reviewing the fitness certificate issued for the school.' Neetika Jha is a Correspondent with The Indian Express. Wife of BNP man who lived illegally in India for 30 yrs held
Bagdah (N 24 Parganas): A BNP (Bangladesh Nationalist Party) worker's wife was arrested on Saturday at Bagdah in North 24 Parganas for allegedly aiding and harbouring her Bangladeshi husband, who had been living illegally in India for nearly 30 years using forged documents. Police sources said BNP worker Rezaul Mondal had illegally entered India three decades ago and married Sherful Mondal of Bagi village in Bagdah. To obtain Indian identity documents, he allegedly showed his mother-in-law as his mother. There are also allegations that Rezaul cast votes in India. Police sources said Rezaul was from Jhinaidah village in Bangladesh. Following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina govt, Rezaul returned to Bangladesh a few months ago, police said. "The matter came to light during an investigation after Rezaul's son Firoz eloped with a girl.
