Global dividend funds attract inflows on rate-cut hopes and market jitters

By Patturaja Murugaboopathy (Reuters) -Global funds that invest in dividend-paying stocks are drawing strong flows this year, following two years of tepid investor demand, as investors seek assets with a stable income while they navigate geopolitical and economic tensions. Higher dividend-yielding stocks have become popular as the technology sector, which was last year's standout performer, lags behind dividend-heavy sectors such as utilities and energy in 2025. Global dividend-focused exchange-traded funds attracted $23.7 billion in inflows in the first half of 2025, the most in three years, according to Lipper data from LSEG. "Consistent dividend growth signals a company's managers are disciplined at capital allocation and confident about future business prospects," said Steve Watson, an equity portfolio manager at Capital Group. "With tariff negotiations likely to linger for months, dividend growers could provide portfolios with a measure of stability when markets become volatile." Sector-wise, energy led the way with a global dividend yield of 4.75%, followed by real estate at 3.7%, utilities at 3.3%, and financials at 3%, according to LSEG data. By region, Europe had the highest dividend yield of 3%, while Asia-Pacific's dividend yield was 2.6% and the U.S. lagged with an average dividend yield of 1.4%. "With policymakers widely expected to trim rates later in the year, the bond side of the ledger could see coupons ratchet lower, while a broad swath of companies still have room to hold or even lift their dividends," said Chad Harmer, chief investment officer at Harmer Wealth Management. "If that script plays out, the income gap should tilt further in equities' favour." The iShares International Select Dividend ETF has gained nearly 26% this year, while the Xtrackers MSCI EAFE High Dividend Yield Equity ETF and the Schwab International Dividend Equity ETF are up around 18% each. In comparison, the MSCI World Index has returned 8.5% year-to-date. Governments, multilateral lenders launch push for debt payment pauses

By David Latona SEVILLE, Spain (Reuters) -A number of wealthy creditor nations and multilateral lenders have launched an initiative that aims to give sovereign borrowers breathing space on debt payments in the event of a climate or humanitarian crisis, Spain announced on Tuesday. The Debt Suspension Clause Alliance was launched during a U.N. conference in Seville - a once in a decade meeting aimed at furthering development finance goals and guidelines. The initiative pushes for the systematic inclusion of clauses in new public and commercial lending that allow for a temporary suspension of debt payments in the face of extraordinary events, such as natural disasters, food crises or health emergencies. "The logic behind these clauses is simple but powerful: to create immediate fiscal space in times of greatest need, allowing countries to focus their resources on response and recovery without risking their solvency or ability to meet social spending," said economy minister Carlos Cuerpo. Speaking on the sidelines of the conference, Spain's Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares told Reuters that the suspension clause for debt repayments could also cover war. The governments of Canada, France and Britain were among the co-leaders of the initiative together with multilateral banks, including the Inter-American Development Bank, the European Investment Bank, the African Development Bank, the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean and the Asian Development Bank. A number of multilateral lenders have already added such clauses in their lending - including inserting them retroactively in some existing loans. The Inter-American Development Bank said in the statement on Tuesday that adding climate-resilient debt clauses in sovereign loans had extended $3.2 billion in protection across several countries. It said it would expand this to more nations and broaden its scope. The European Investment Bank last year made climate-resilient debt clauses available to 70 developing countries. The World Bank - one of the biggest multilateral development lenders - has also broadened the scope of its Climate Resilient Debt Clauses for the most vulnerable countries in recent years.

US job openings unexpectedly rise in May, hiring falls

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. job openings unexpectedly increased in May, but a decline in hiring added to signs that the labor market had shifted into lower gear amid uncertainty over the Trump administration's tariffs on imports, with a 90-day pause on higher reciprocal duties drawing to an end. Job openings, a measure of labor demand, were up 374,000 to 7.769 million by the last day of May, the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics said in its Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, or JOLTS report, on Tuesday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 7.30 million vacancies. Hiring decreased by 112,000 to 5.503 million in May. Layoffs dropped 188,000 to 1.601 million. Economists say the lack of clarity on what happens after July 9, when the 90-day pause on President Donald Trump's reciprocal tariffs expires, had left businesses unable to make long-term plans. A 90-day temporary reduction in tariffs between the U.S. and China is due to end in mid-August. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Monday that trade partners could still face sharply higher tariffs next Wednesday, adding that any potential negotiating extensions will be up to Trump, who hinted that Japan may soon be notified of higher import duties. Data last week showed a surge in the number of people collecting unemployment checks to more than a 3-1/2-year high in mid-June. A survey from the Conference Board showed the share of consumers who viewed jobs as being "plentiful" dropped to the lowest level in more than four years in June. Economists polled by Reuters expect the government's closely watched employment report on Thursday to show the jobless rate increased to 4.3% in June from 4.2% in May. Nonfarm payrolls are forecast to rise by 110,000 jobs after advancing by 139,000 in May. The employment report is being published a day early because of the Independence Day holiday on Friday.
