Countries including France, Kenya, Barbados and Spain on Monday launched a coalition to push for taxes on wealthy air passengers to help poorer nations respond to climate change, the French presidency said. The coalition, which also brings together Somalia, Benin, Sierra Leone and Antigua and Barbuda, said it would work to increase the number of countries taxing plane tickets, including business-class travel, and private jets. The air industry is a major source of the polluting emissions that contribute to global warming, which inflicts its worst impacts on vulnerable developing countries that are least responsible.Ahead of November's UN climate summit in Brazil, the French presidency said in a statement the group would work on making the aviation sector contribute more to funding climate adaptation. The aim would be to plough at least some of the tax proceeds into "resilient investments and fair transitions" and help poorer countries raise more domestic revenue, a key factor for development, the statement added.France, Kenya and Barbados have previously lobbied for such "solidarity levies" to raise money for climate action, suggesting taxes on shipping, fossil fuels, plastic and cryptocurrency. The group has suggested levies on flying could raise up to 187 billion euros (USD 220 billion) if they were applied across the board. Greenpeace welcomed an "important step" to raise more money from "the most elite and polluting form of travel", which has remained "undertaxed"."Bold, cooperative action that makes polluters pay is not just fair - it's essential," Greenpeace's global political lead Rebecca Newsom said in a statement. The announcement came during a UN development conference in Spain that aims to deliver fresh impetus for a sector reeling from severe cuts to foreign aid, which have repercussions for poor countries' battle against climate change.Wealthy nations that have historically done the most to drive climate change are obliged to provide finance to help poorer countries adapt to its consequences under the 2015 Paris Agreement.

Microsoft to cut 6,000 jobs in fresh round of lay offs amid restructuring
Microsoft will lay off nearly 4 per cent of its workforce, the company said on Wednesday, in the latest job cuts as the tech giant looks to rein in costs amid hefty investments in artificial intelligence company, which had about 2,28,000 employees worldwide as of June 2024, had announced layoffs in May, affecting around 6,000 workers. It was planning to cut thousands of jobs, particularly in sales, Bloomberg News reported last Windows maker had pledged USD 80 billion in capital spending for its fiscal year 2025. However, the soaring cost of scaling its AI infrastructure has weighed on its margins, with its June quarter cloud margin expected to shrink from last year. Microsoft said on Wednesday it planned to reduce organisational layers with fewer managers and streamline its products, procedures and Seattle Times first reported on the layoffs earlier on Wednesday. Separately, Bloomberg News reported Microsoft's Barcelona-based King division, which makes the Candy Crush video game, is cutting 10 per cent of its staff, or about 200 Tech peers, which are investing heavily in artificial intelligence, have also announced job parent Meta earlier this year said it would trim about 5 per cent of its "lowest performers", while Alphabet's Google has also laid off hundreds of employees in the past has also cut jobs across its business segments, most recently in its books division. The company had earlier laid off employees in its devices and services unit, and communications uncertainties and rising costs have triggered layoffs across sectors in Corporate America, as companies rush to streamline operations and hedge against further cost pressures.- Ends

3G Capital, Singapore's GIC seek CCI nod to acquire Skechers
Investment firm 3G Capital and Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC have sought approval from the Competition Commission of India (CCI) to acquire footwear and apparel company Skechers. "The proposed transaction is an indirect acquisition of all the outstanding shares and sole control of the Target by affiliates of investment funds managed by 3G Capital partners LP (3G Capital), ie, the acquirers (Beach Acquisition Co Parent, LLC and Beach Acquisition Merger Sub, Inc)," a notice submitted with the CCI on June 26 stated. GIC has also sought clearance from the competition watchdog to invest capital, to be utilised to partly finance the proposed transaction. After the completion of the transaction, GIC Investment will be entitled to certain rights in Skechers. The parties said the proposed transaction meets the thresholds specified under section 5(a)(i)(A) of the Competition Act, 2002 and is being notified pursuant to the agreement and plan of merger on May 4, 2025 executed by and between the acquirers and target. They (parties) stated that the relevant market definition may be left open for the purposes of the proposed transaction by 3G Capital and GIC Investment will not not likely to cause any appreciable adverse effect on competition in India. In May this year, Skechers USA, Inc -- the third largest footwear company in the world -- announced that it has agreed to be acquired by 3G Capital for about USD 9.4 billion and taken private by the investment firm. The deal is expected to close in the third quarter this year. Upon completion of the transaction, the company's common stock will no longer be listed on the New York Stock Exchange, and Skechers will become a private company. US-based Skechers designs, develops and markets a diverse range of lifestyle and performance footwear, apparel and accessories for men, women and children in 180 countries, including India. Good news to Gautam Adani from Bangladesh! Rs 37422276500 single largest payment made by…, resolves Adani's power…
Bangladesh made its largest single payment of USD 437 million in June, settling pending dues including carrying costs and power purchase agreement-related charges thereby reaffirming the Indian conglomerate's power asset as a reliable and cost-effective energy source for the country's growing needs, according to a PTI report citing sources. The report further added that Bangladesh has now become regular in its payments. Additionally, a Letter of Credit (LC) covering about two months of billing has been established, along with a sovereign guarantee for all outstanding dues as added security. Since payment-related matters are resolved, Bangladesh has asked Adani Power to supply power from both units as per BPDB (Bangladesh Power Development Board) schedule, they added. Bangladesh Clears Adani Power's Dues Report claimed that Bangladesh has resolved Adani Power's dues, including the carrying cost. Over the last 3-4 months, the country has been paying USD 90-100 million per month, and in June, it paid USD 437 million. The LCs are worth about two months of billing and sovereign guarantee for all dues, as additional security has put Adani in a very comfortable situation. Concerns raised related to investigations into the PPA by the Bangladesh authorities have been resolved, with no adverse aspects found. With all these developments, lenders are confident of improving APL's credit rating to AA+ from the current AA. How Adani Power Supplies Electricity To Bangladesh? Adani Power supplies electricity to Bangladesh from a dedicated 1600 MW plant located in Godda district of Jharkhand, meeting 10 per cent of the country's power demand. The company supplies among the most competitively priced power to Bangladesh, as is evident from BPDB's merit order dispatch data, which is an essential requirement. Bangladesh had in the past struggled to meet its payment obligations under the 2017 deal, as rising import costs following the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022 and domestic political turmoil, which led to the ouster of the prime minister strained the country's finances. As a result, Adani halved its supply last year, and full supplies were resumed in March 2025 after the country's monthly payments started covering some of the dues. PTI sources said over the last three to four months, Bangladesh had started paying USD 90-100 million per month, and in June, the company received the single largest chunk of payment of USD 437 million, thereby clearing all dues. Adani Power's Godda unit was housed under a separate subsidiary, which has now been merged with the parent, providing greater operational and financial synergy. With all these developments, lenders are confident of improving Adani Power's credit rating to AA+ from the current AA, which will further bring down its cost of funds. The current developments vindicate the contract established between the Bangladesh government and Adani Power. The Godda asset is now well integrated into the Bangladesh Power system successfully.
