Days left to nab free audiobooks by top-rated authors for three months at Amazon
Prime Members can nab themselves 3 months of Audible for free. Members can select one bestseller or new release each month, which will be theirs to keep, and they can listen unlimitedly to thousands of included audiobooks, podcasts, and originals from July 6 to July 31. After the three-month period, the subscription continues at £8.99 per month.
Audible boasts a vast selection of audiobooks. For instance, listeners could tune into Sunrise on the Reaping: A Hunger Games Novel, narrated by actor Jefferson White, known for his role as Jimmy Hurdstrom in Yellowstone. The book chronicles the fiftieth annual Hunger Games, where twice the usual number of tributes are taken from their homes, reports Wales Online.
Another choice is A Court of Thorns and Roses Book 1 by Sarah J. Maas, the first dramatised audiobook adaptation of the number one New York Times bestselling series. The novel now features a full cast of actors, immersive sound effects and cinematic music.
For those keen on farming tales, there's also Diddly Squat: A Year on the Farm by Jeremy Clarkson which welcomes listeners into Jeremy's agricultural adventure - alongside his partner Lisa, Kaleb the tractor operator, Charlie, Ellen the shepherd and his head of security and dry stone wall builder Gerald.
If Audible isn't the preferred choice for enjoying favourite books, readers could alternatively explore Google Play Books which offers a selection of both complimentary and paid titles, collections and options spanning fiction, non-fiction and real-life accounts to select from. Spotify also provides a variety of Audiobooks through its Premium service that permits up to 15 hours of audiobook listening with numerous titles to pick from.
Nevertheless, the titles available on Audible have received excellent ratings. For instance, Sunrise on the Reaping: A Hunger Games Novel has achieved an impressive 4.7 out of 5 star rating on the Amazon platform. One reviewer commented: "'Sunrise on the Reaping' is one of those rare prequels that deepens the original story rather than simply leaning on nostalgia. I genuinely loved this book."
Another said: "Sunrise on the Reaping is everything I hoped for in a Hunger Games prequel - and more. Suzanne Collins dives deep into the twisted roots of the Games, set 24 years before Katniss volunteers, and the result is equal parts chilling and fascinating."
"This book captures the emotion of the characters better than any of the other books in the series," remarked another listener. However, not everyone was enamoured with all of the audiobooks. One individual reviewed Diddly Squat: A Year on the Farm and said: "I was expecting this to be a full narrative of the first year on the farm. Turns out it's extracts from his column in the Sunday Times which have been arranged in a sort of yearly order. No doubt there will be snippets I've not heard of before from watching the TV series, only read first few chapters, but initially I'm disappointed."

Gabby Logan says 'it sounds a bit pathetic' as she makes heartbreaking 'realisation'
Strictly Come Dancing star Gabby Logan has opened up about her time on the BBC show, revealing the brutal realisation she had after being voted off in 2007 Former Strictly Come Dancing star Gabby Logan has revealed her candid thoughts on her exit from the 2007 series, describing it as a "sobering" event that had a significant impact on her life. The BBC presenter, who is usually seen delivering sports coverage, showed off her moves on the dance floor with pro dancer James Jordan, while her husband Kenny Logan was also competing, partnered with James' wife, Ola Jordan. Now 52, Gabby reflected on her stint in the competition: "I had an amazing experience on Strictly, I was only on it for a few weeks, but I had an amazing experience — but also, a kind of life-changing experience in many ways. "[It] sounds a bit dramatic, and you hear people going 'Strictly changed my life', but this wasn't in a good way." Despite her affection for the show, Gabby admitted she struggled with being voted off and pondered why she didn't connect with the audience, reports Wales Online. She recounted the shock of elimination: "When you get voted out of Strictly, it's so shocking, because you go in every week starting to work on your following week's dance, and you don't expect to go home," she said. Gabby, who had been scoring well at the time of her departure, found herself unexpectedly in the bottom two against Penny Lancaster. Ultimately, the judges decided to save Rod Stewart's wife, Penny, bringing Gabby's journey to an abrupt end in the fourth week. Gabby opened up on the Gold Minds podcast with Jessica Ennis about her time on the reality show, revealing: "It was the fact that obviously people didn't vote for me — and it sounds a bit pathetic — but you realise when it's a reality show that it's about whether people like you. And I was very much aware that people didn't like me." She admitted feeling rejected by the public, saying: "I was kind of like, they didn't like me enough to vote for me." Despite reassurances from James, Gabby confessed she felt "upset" over the situation. Reflecting on the aftermath, she said: "It was a very sobering kind of experience because in the days afterwards, not only was I dreadfully missing the dancing, but also realising I kind of felt like, 'Oh, what was it about me that people didn't relate to?'" Gabby discussed the speculation around her competitive nature possibly playing a role in her departure from the show. Adding to the sting of her exit, Gabby noted that her husband stayed in the competition, despite her opinion that he was "rubbish" at dancing. Her husband, a former rugby player, narrowly escaped elimination several times, saved by the judges' decisions, until his journey ended just before the quarter-finals. Gabby revealed that her husband offered to swap places with her after seeing how deeply affected she was by the elimination — although such a switch was, of course, not permitted. The season concluded with Alesha Dixon triumphing. She later joined the judging panel, taking over from Arlene Phillips. Next month, the BBC will begin unveiling the names of the new batch of celebrities keen to clinch the Glitterball trophy.

'Masterpiece' 70s thriller with shocking twist now available to stream for free
One of the greatest horror films of all time has been made available to stream for free on BBC iPlayer. Directed by Nicolas Roeg from a story by Daphne Du Maurier, Don't Look Now is widely regarded as a pivotal work in the genre. It stars the late, great Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie as John and Laura Baxter, two parents grieving the recent death of their young daughter. The pair visit Venice, where John is helping to renovate a dilapidated church. While there, they meet a pair of elderly sisters—one of whom claims to be a psychic. John struggles with the idea that she's seeing the spirit of his recently drowned daughter but seems to be experiencing nightmarish visions of his own, leading to that shocking twist. After first terrifying audiences in 1973, Don't Look Now is streaming for free, where it can traumatise viewers afresh. Don't Look Now currently sits with a healthy 93% 'fresh' score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with critics describing it as a 'masterpiece' and a 'classic' of the genre. Little White Lies has called it 'calculated perfection,' while The Times described it simply as 'genius.' In 2002, prominent film critic Roger Ebert gave the film a glowing five stars, calling out the film as 'a masterpiece of physical filmmaking.' Upon its release, the film was overshadowed by controversy surrounding its infamous sex scene. As Roeg cuts between images of John and Laura getting ready for dinner, the camera also shows the pair in bed together in a raw and intimate sex sequence. Its visual style led to persistent rumours that these were scenes of real, unsimulated sex between its actors… speculation that continues today. 'My gaze shifted to the actors, and I was riveted. By their shifting positions, it was clear to me they were no longer simply acting: they were f***ing on camera,' wrote Producer Peter Bart in his 2011 memoir, Infamous Players: A Tale of Movies, the Mob (and Sex). However, the stars have always rejected such allegations, with Sutherland denying that Bart was even in the room at all. In the production notes for the film's 4K re-release, cinematographer Anthony B. Richmond echoed Sutherland's denial, saying: 'We did a good job; it's very real. People still say they actually made love, but they didn't.' Meanwhile, Christie's boyfriend at the time, actor Warren Beatty, reportedly tried to prevent the film from being released, so outraged was he by the infamous sex scene. In April 2015, it was announced that the film would be getting a remake, to the chagrin of Hunger Games star Sutherland. Speaking in a sweary interview with Metro, the actor described the prospect of a remake as 'shameful.' He explained: 'Don't embarrass yourselves by participating in it. It's bulls**t. It was a piece of work indelibly written by Nicholas Roeg. More Trending 'Why would they do it? It's just people trying to profit off the back of something that's very beautiful. It's shameful. They should be ashamed of themselves.' A decade on, and the remake has not yet resurfaced. Might it be dead in the water? Watch Don't Look Now on BBC iPlayer.
