49ers superstar taking on an important new role in 2025

USA Today4 days ago
After a down year, the San Francisco 49ers saw some key veterans leave the team over the last few months, including wide receiver Deebo Samuel in a trade and edge rusher Leonard Floyd, cornerback Charvarius Ward and linebacker Dre Greenlaw in free agent.
With those established voices leaving the locker room, the 49ers will need other veterans to step up and take on a leadership role, and defensive end Nick Bosa is doing his best to be one of them in 2025.
'I definitely need to take a leadership role, for sure,' Bosa told The Athletic's Vic Tafur. 'It's one thing to come in and work on my job and get better, which is all I've ever really worried about. And then it's another thing to try and bring everybody along with you. So it's definitely something that I'm thinking about and something I want to do.'
While Bosa has some teammates returning from last year's roster, including Yetur Gross-Matos, Robert Beal, Sam Okuayinomu, Jonathan Garvin and Tarron Jackson (who was carted off of the field during a practice session over the weekend), he's also joined by two newcomers - Bryce Huff and Mykel Williams.
The 49ers traded for Huff this offseason, so he's not a young player entering the league for the first time, but Williams was San Francisco's first-round pick this year, and he could greatly benefit from Bosa's advice.
Through the first few days of training camp, the five-time Pro Bowler and the team's top selection have spent some time together, and they seem to be enjoying their time.
'I mean it's just friendly banter, but some of it is constructive criticism,' Bosa said. 'Obviously, it's fun to watch a young guy just go through the growing pains that I went through — and anything that I see I'm going to help them with.'
Williams is entering the league as a 21-year-old who didn't have a ton of success in bringing down opposing quarterbacks in college (14 sacks in 40 games over three seasons). Still, Bosa likes what he sees from the rookie and knows exactly what he needs to work on.
'Mykel's looked really good,' Bosa said. 'He is very physical and he has a big reach, so he just needs to hone in obviously on his aiming points and trusting the system.'
If Williams is going to reach his potential, Bosa's help could get him get there quicker.

3 Teams That Should Trade For Dallas Cowboys Star Micah Parsons

3 Teams That Should Trade For Dallas Cowboys Star Micah Parsons originally appeared on The Spun. It seems that the relations between the Dallas Cowboys and pass rushing linebacker Micah Parsons has deteriorated almost entirely. Dallas' inability to reach an extension with Parsons has reportedly reached a point where the four-time Pro Bowler is on the verge of requesting a trade. "NEWS: The relationship between Micah Parsons and the Dallas Cowboys has deteriorated to the point where the star pass rusher is considering drastic measures, which could include a trade request, sources tell (Dianna Russini of The Athletic)," The Athletic reported this morning. If the Cowboys do come to the point where they have to trade Micah Parsons or risk losing him in free agency, it seems likely that Dallas will do the former. So which teams should do everything in their power to bring Parsons into the fold? Here are three teams that we think could be the route to go: Buffalo Bills The Bills already know what their identity is on offense, but their defense took a step back in 2024 and their Super Bowl dreams once again fell short in the process. The key to finally overcoming Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in the playoffs might be to do what the Buccaneers and Eagles have done in the Super Bowl: Plant Mahomes in the ground, early and often. Perhaps no player has a better chance of doing that to Mahomes all by himself than Parsons, who has never had less than 12 sacks in a season. By contrast, the Bills have not had a player record 12 sacks in a year since 2016. If there was ever a time to go all-in on a defensive player, now would be the time. New England Patriots No team in the NFL has more cap space than the Patriots right now, so no team is better positioned to give Parsons all the money he wants than them. After back-to-back last-place finishes in the AFC East and now on their longest playoff drought in over 30 years, the Patriots have a lot of needs as they rebuild under head coach Mike Vrabel. As a former linebacker in his own right, Vrabel might see Parsons as the exact kind of player who can set the tone for his defense, giving ascending star Drake Maye some more room for error as he keeps developing. The challenge would be finding something that the Patriots can afford to lose and that the Cowboys might find worth having... Philadelphia Eagles It seems more likely that Donald Trump and Rosie O'Donnell would become best friends than the Dallas Cowboys would ever give Parsons to their hated rivals and the reigning Super Bowl champions. But if there was ever a man who with a proven track record of making impossible moves happen, it's Eagles general manager Howie Roseman. After years and years of fleecing the league out of top players to build his team into a powerhouse that not even the Kansas City Chiefs can overcome, a player like Micah Parsons could ensure that the dynasty he's building lasts for another decade or so. Roseman has tons of players he can swap and assets to move. If Jerry Jones and Roseman can swallow their pride, they can make an historic deal happen.3 Teams That Should Trade For Dallas Cowboys Star Micah Parsons first appeared on The Spun on Aug 1, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Aug 1, 2025, where it first appeared.

People familiar with the transaction said the multibillion-dollar deal would give the NFL an equity stake in ESPN. The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal has not been finalized. It was first reported by The Athletic. The NFL and ESPN had no comment. The NFL has been trying to sell its media properties for nearly five years. ESPN and the league have been involved in on-again, off-again talks for the past three years. The proposed move comes as ESPN is expected to soon launch its direct-to-consumer service, likely before the end of August. The service would give cord cutters access to all of ESPN's programs and networks for $29.99 per month. Most cable, satellite and viewers who have streaming services will receive the service for free as part of their subscription. ESPN would get access to the popular RedZone channel, as well as NFL Network and an additional seven regular-season games (six international and a Saturday afternoon late-season contest). A couple of weeks ago, ESPN announced that NFL Network host Rich Eisen's three-hour program would air on ESPN Radio as well as stream on Disney+ and ESPN+. 'The Rich Eisen Show' is not affiliated with NFL Network. ESPN has carried NFL games since 1987 and 'Monday Night Football' since 2006. Under the current TV contract, it will have the 2027 and 2031 Super Bowls for the first time. NFL Network started in November 2003 and was the second major pro league to have its own network. NBA TV started in 1999, MLB Network in 2009 and NHL Network in the United States in 2007. ___ AP NFL:
