Euro 2025: Long VAR Review of 4-Plus Minutes Decides No Penalty for Denmark Against Sweden
Brazilian referee Edina Alves was whistled and jeered by fans during the long delay. She studied the incident on a fieldside monitor before deciding to award a free kick to Sweden instead. Play eventually resumed in the 11th minute–fully five minutes after the incident in question in the Sweden penalty area. A free kick awarded for a foul against Denmark captain Pernille Harder was lofted toward the star forward, who tangled with the falling Sweden winger Madelen Janogy. Harder was unable to control the ball, which ran to safety toward Sweden goalkeeper Jennifer Falk. Replays of the incident eventually showed Janogy had herself been tripped by a Denmark opponent on the edge of the penalty area as she ran back to defend the cross.
Alves was invited to referee at Euro 2025 as part of an exchange program between European soccer body UEFA and South America's CONMEBOL.

England Becomes First Reigning Champion To Lose A Women's Euro Opener
England set a number of unwanted firsts as it began the defense of its Women's European Championship title by losing to France 2–1 on Saturday. Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Sandy Baltimore scored two quick-fire goals toward the end of the first half as France recorded a ninth straight win and stunned the defending champion. Keira Walsh reduced the deficit three minutes from time, but it wasn't enough to prevent England from becoming the first titleholder to lose its opening match at a Women's Euros. It also ended England coach Sarina Wiegman's remarkable flawless record in the competition after winning 12 out of 12 matches across two tournaments as she steered first the Netherlands to the title and then England. The Lionesses next face the Netherlands on Wednesday before taking on Wales in their final group match four days later. The Netherlands beat Wales 3–0 in the early match in Group D. France was without injured captain Griedge Mbock, while England welcomed back Lauren James, with the midfielder starting her first match since a hamstring injury at the start of April. James almost gave England the lead within 40 seconds with a clever run into the box but fired narrowly over. Alessia Russo thought she gave England the lead in the 16th minute, turning in the rebound after Lauren Hemp's shot was saved, but it was ruled out for a tight offside decision on Beth Mead in the buildup. France grew in ascendancy after that. Sakina Karchaoui almost scored what would have been one of the goals of the tournament as she lobbed Hannah Hampton, but the ball landed in the side-netting. Hampton also had to make a couple of fine stops before France broke the deadlock in the 36th. Elise De Almeida won the ball in her own half before surging down the right and threading the ball through to Delphine Cascarino, who put in a low cross for Katoto to tap in at the back post. France doubled its lead just three minutes later. Baltimore mazed her way into the area close to the byline, and Lucy Bronze inadvertently kept the ball in play with her attempted tackle, allowing the Chelsea forward to curl into the far side of the net. France was almost out of sight at the start of the second half, with Hampton having to scramble behind her and grab the ball before it crossed the line after fumbling an effort from Grace Geyoro. England hadn't even had a shot on target before it got back into the game late on. A corner was cleared only to the edge of the area for Walsh to calmly control before firing into the top right corner for only her second international goal.

Doué and Dembélé Score for PSG in 2-0 Quarterfinal Win Over Bayern Munich at Club World Cup
Désiré Doué scored in the 78th minute, and Paris Saint-Germain moved a step closer to another trophy with a 2–0 victory over Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals of the Club World Cup on Saturday, a game marred by a gruesome injury to young German star Jamal Musiala. With PSG two men down after a pair of late red cards and Bayern throwing everyone forward, Ousmane Dembélé added an insurance goal deep into stoppage time to send the French powerhouse on to the semifinals Wednesday against either Real Madrid or Borussia Dortmund at East Rutherford, New Jersey. PSG, which claimed its first Champions League title with a 5–0 rout of Inter Milan five weeks ago, broke a scoreless deadlock when João Neves stole the ball from Harry Kane near the halfway line to send the French team sprinting toward the Bayern goal. Neves got the ball back off a give-and-go and found Doué lurking just outside the top of the area. His left-footed shot caught Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer flat-footed as it skidded inside the right post. But PSG had to hold on for dear life to preserve the win after Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernández were both sent off with red cards. Pacho was called for a reckless challenge, and Hernández earned red for doling out an elbow. Bayern had two apparent goals flagged for offside, including a header by Kane. In the waning seconds, the German club was awarded a penalty kick, only to have it waved off after a video review. Musiala's sickening injury marred the outcome. As he chased a loose ball near the end line in first-half stoppage time, PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma darted off his spot and dived for it–only to crash into the left ankle of the 22-year-old German. As Musiala rolled over, his foot dangled awkwardly, the ankle appearing to be cleanly broken. Donnarumma walked away with the ball but kneeled down in horror when he looked back and realized the seriousness of the injury. A stretcher was immediately summoned to take Musiala off the field. Both teams walked toward the locker rooms in stunned silence, with the PSG keeper appearing to be close to tears. He was booed throughout the second half by Bayern fans each time he touched the ball. The last of six games at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta drew a crowd of 66,937, nearly filling the retractable-roof facility. It was the largest turnout in Atlanta, one of 11 US cities that will host games at next year's World Cup.

Euro 2025: Netherlands Sparked By Miedema's 100th Goal Beats Wales
Netherlands great Vivianne Miedema's 100th goal in international soccer was key to a 3–0 win over debut-making Wales at the Women's European Championship on Saturday. After Miedema's injury-hit season, no one expected the all-time Dutch record goal-scorer to complete its opening game in the toughest of groups. Those 70 minutes of Miedema were more than enough in a dominant win that gave Wales a tough lesson in its entry to major women's tournament soccer. The result and performance suggested the Euro 2017 champion – and 2019 World Cup finalist – was up to advancing from Group D. England, the defending champion, and France met later Saturday in Zurich. Miedema made her historic mark, scoring with a delightful curling shot in stoppage time at the end of the first half. The skill she showed to create the chance by twice deceiving a defender when faking to strike the ball seemed unlikely to that point. Miedema's first touch had been heavy in the penalty area, and she seemed to lack match fitness after so little game time at Manchester City because of knee and hamstring injuries. The Dutch were relentless in the second half, adding goals in the 48th by Victoria Pelova and the 57th by wing back Esmee Brugts. It could have been more. The Wales crossbar was struck twice between the second and third goals by shots from Jill Roord and Jackie Groenen. Roord also struck a post with a first-half shot. Miedema's exit let another recently injured star forward, Lineth Beerensteyn, return to action, and the winger quickly looked dangerous.
