UFC star sparks worry with weight cut for title fight - 'Looks like he's dying'
Charles Oliveira is no stranger when it comes to sacrificing a lot to cut the final few pounds and has once again worried fans ahead of his return this weekend
Charles Oliveira has sparked concern among UFC fans after footage emerged of his gruelling weight cut ahead of his clash with Ilia Topuria.
The Brazilian is looking to become a two-time lightweight champion when he takes on 'El Matador.' Oliveira won the vacant title back in 2021 after knocking out Michael Chandler - and later successfully defended the strap against Dustin Poirier. In 2022, however, he was stripped of the title after failing to make weight for his showdown with Justin Gaethje.
Despite winning the fight, Oliveira was unable to claim the title after missing weight. The 35-year-old eventually lost to Islam Makhachev for the vacant title. 'Do Bronx' has only lost once since the defeat to Makhachev and comes into the dust-up with Topuria off the back of a second win over Chandler.
Sensationally, despite his recent weight struggles, Oliveira used to compete in the featherweight division. However, towards the back end of his stint at 145lbs, he failed to make weight on several occasions - prompting the eventual return to lightweight in 2017. Ahead of his fight with Topuria, the Brazilian has left fans worried after footage emerged of the star fighter going through a brutal weight cut.
Oliveira was surrounded by his team-mates and coaches as he hopes to successfully make the 155lb limit ahead of Friday's official weigh-ins. The footage has gone viral online - with many fans offering their verdict. "Crazy what they have to go through to put on a show for us," one fan wrote.
A second posted: "Looks like he's dying," while a third commented: "Looks brutal." A fourth wrote: "Way too early to be cutting all that weight. Cant rehydrate for 24 hrs. That's not good. Not sure why he is doing this so early as opposed to tonight." Another replied: "Bro is going through it." Another user commented: "Weight cut? Would rather say near death experience."
There were some fans who called for fighters to compete at their natural weight. "So it's ridiculous to me that fighters have to lose weight to fight in a weight class that they shouldn't be fighting in to begin with. Why don't you just buy it at their weight?" One fan wrote.
Another commented: "Dumbest part about MMA, just fight ur everyday walking around weight. Ur a pro athlete so ur in shape all the time. If u weigh say 180, than u can fight from 170-190 its so simple but being 180 everyday to fight at 150 but be 180 at fight time is a waste and bad for the sport." Another fan replied: "Will never understand weight cuts... everyone should fight at their natural weight, it's a lot safer for everyone," while another posted: "The fact that fighters have to put their body's in This much danger to have grown men praying over them as they cut weight, is exactly why weight cutting should not be a thing in MMA."
In the build up to their clash, Topuria and Oliveira have crossed paths multiple times. Although 'El Matador' has vowed to knock the Brazilian out in the first round, that did not stop him from paying his respect when the pair met at the sauna during their weight cut. Topuria shared that moment as well as another run-in. "That's how our sport is. It's never personal, everyone's just fighting for their dreams," he said.

Casemiro makes final decision on Man Utd exit as Carlo Ancelotti role emerges
Casemiro has been attracting interest from Saudi Arabia for the past 18 months as United have been looking to trim their huge wage bill - but he's set to stay at Old Trafford Big-earning Brazilian midfielder Casemiro is set to stay at Manchester United next season after being offered a World Cup lifeline by Carlo Ancelotti. Casemiro, who collects a cool £350,000-a-week, was handed a shock recall by his country when his former Real Madrid boss named his first Brazil squad earlier this month. And with the 33-year-old now targeting the finals in Canada, Mexico and the United States next summer, he believes his chances of playing in a third World Cup will be enhanced by staying in the Premier League. Casemiro has been attracting interest from Saudi Arabia for the past 18 months as United have been looking to trim their huge wage bill. But he worked his way back into manager Ruben Amorim's plans towards the end of the season and was rewarded when new Brazil coach Ancelotti ended his two-year international absence by bringing him into his squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Paraguay. Casemiro played the full 90 minutes in both games as Brazil collected four points to move up to third place in the South American qualifying table. Ancelotti managed Casemiro at the Bernabeu and didn't agree with the decision to sell him to United in a £70million deal three years ago. The Italian believes the five-time Champions League winner can be a big dressing room influence for him during his first crack at international management. Casemiro has one year left on his United contract, although the Reds have an option to trigger a 12-month extension. He impressed Amorim with his attitude during the final few months of a traumatic season, but United will not stand in his way if the Brazilian decided to cash in by moving to Saudi. Casemiro has continually insisted that he is happy in Manchester despite interest from Al-Nassr, the big-spending club that has just handed Cristiano Ronaldo a two-year contract worth almost £500 million. The Brazilian is a close friend of the 40-year-old Portuguese after they played together at Madrid. And he posted a picture of him wearing a pair of £7,000 LED recovery boots manufactured by a company partly owned by Ronaldo on his Instagram account during the week. United are looking for buyers for a raft of players who are surplus to requirements under Amorim as they try to raise money to finance a rebuild. Wing trio Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony are all in the shop window, but the Reds' hopes that Inter Milan would follow up an enquiry for misfiring £72 million striker Rasmus Hojlund with a bid for the Danish international. Inter targeted two new strikers after finishing second in serie A and then being hammered by Paris St Germain in the Champions League final. But they have spent £20 million on Parma's Ange-Yoan Bonny and are ready to give teenager Francesco Pio Esposito more game-time after he capped a fine performance against River Plate in the Club World Cup with his first goal for the club. That would close the door on a permanent move for Hojlund, although Inter could still offer a 12-month loan option with an obligation to buy. Despite failing to get a knockdown in the fight, the 'Problem Child' scored a dominant victory on points. Paul had hoped to return to the ring earlier this year - following sensational reports that the American was finalising a deal to fight Canelo Alvarez in May. However, the Mexican opted to pen a deal with Riyadh Season instead. Chelsea battling Premier League rivals for Joao Pedro after bid rejected
Joao Pedro has thrived for Brighton in the Premier League since joining from Watford but the Seagulls face a tall order to keep hold of the Brazilian international Chelsea are battling it out with Newcastle to sign Brighton striker Joao Pedro. Newcastle have already had a £50m-plus bid turned down by Brighton who will not allow the Brazil international to go on the cheap. Chelsea are also keen and have held discussions over signing the 23-year-old who would add options and versatility to their forward line. That would raise serious question marks over the futures of Christopher Nkunku who has been heavily linked with Manchester United and also Nicolas Jackson. Jackson was sent off in the Club World Cup which means he has been serving a ban in two separate competitions after missing the end of the Premier League season after getting a red card. Brighton have rejected bids from two separate Premier League clubs with Liverpool and Arsenal also having been linked with the versatile forward who can play through the middle and wide. Chelsea have held discussions but are now pushing to get a deal done and it remains to be seen whether they can agree a deal. Chelsea have been very active in this window as they are still looking to get a deal done for Borussia Dortmund 's Jamie Gittens. Brighton signed Pedro from Watford in a deal worth around £30m in the summer of 2023 and will want to get a big profit. Pedro, who has scored 30 goals in 70 Albion appearances, is a long-term target of Newcastle as who were also keen in 2022. But now Newcastle face a fight on their hands with Chelsea and other Premier League clubs keen on the Brazilian. Pedro was banished from Fabian Hurzeler's squad for the final two Premier League matches of the season following an alleged training ground spat with Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke. Now his future could be elsewhere if anyone can meet Brighton's price. Earlier this month, Brighton boss Hurzeler suggested he expects to have Joao Pedro and Kaoru Mitoma back for pre-season training. Mitoma was the subject of interest from the Saudi Pro League last season but ended up staying put. "For sure. I'm really looking forward for both of them," the boss tols Sky Sports. "They're great players and they helped us a lot last season. They're expected to be back next week." Brighton have already spent big this summer, with Greek striker Charalampos Kostoulas joining from Olympiacos for around £30m. Tommy Watson and Diego Coppola have also completed moves, from Sunderland and Verona respectively. "I think they all have great potential. We keep doing our way, signing young players with big potential and trying to develop them," Hurzeler added. "That's what we'll try to do with these new signings and I'm sure they will make us better." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
