27 people confirmed dead as flood waters recede in central Texas
The sheriff's office in Kerr County, Texas said more than 800 people had been evacuated from the region as flood waters receded in the area around the Guadalupe River, about 85 miles (137 km) northwest of San Antonio.
'We will not stop until every single person is found,' Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha said at a news conference.
At least 23 to 25 people from the Camp Mystic summer camp were missing, most of them reported to be young girls. The river waters rose 29 feet rapidly near the camp.
The U.S. National Weather Service said that the flash flood emergency has largely ended for Kerr County, the epicenter of the flooding, following thunderstorms that dumped as much as a foot of rain early on Friday. A flood watch, however, remained in effect until 7 p.m. for the broader region.
NDMA issues heavy rain forecast, flood alerts for several regions
Kerr County sits in the Texas Hill Country, a rural area known for its rugged terrain, historic towns and other tourist attractions.
Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick said up to 500 rescue workers were searching for an unknown number of people who were still missing, including many who had come to the area for an Independence Day celebration by the river.
'We don't know how many people were in tents on the side, in small trailers by the side, in rented homes by the side, because it was going to be the Fourth of July holiday,' he said on Fox News Live.
U.S. President Donald Trump said the federal government is working with state and local officials to respond to the flooding. 'Melania and I are praying for all of the families impacted by this horrible tragedy. Our Brave First Responders are on site doing what they do best,' he said on social media.
Dalton Rice, city manager for Kerrville, the county seat, told reporters on Friday that the extreme flooding struck before dawn with little or no warning, precluding authorities from issuing advance evacuation orders as the Guadalupe River swiftly rose above major flood stage in less than two hours.
State emergency management officials had warned as early as Thursday that west and central Texas faced heavy rains and flash flood threats, citing National Weather Service forecasts ahead of the holiday weekend.
The forecasts, however, 'did not predict the amount of rain that we saw,' W. Nim Kidd, director of the Texas Division of Emergency Management, told a news conference on Friday night.
The weekend disaster echoes a catastrophic 1987 Guadalupe River flood in which 10 teenagers drowned when trying to leave a church camp, according to the National Weather Service.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday warned that Pakistan is facing extraordinary conditions due to recent cloudbursts and called for urgent preparedness to deal with increasingly extreme weather events. During a visit to the National Emergencies Operations Centre (NEOC), Sharif said forecasts indicated the risk of further cloudbursts and stressed the need for immediate action. 'We must begin preparations now,' the prime minister said, urging authorities to adopt proactive strategies to address the growing risks posed by intensified monsoon activity. Sharif pledged full federal support to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and provincial governments to ensure integrated planning and early response measures. 'This year's experience highlights the importance of a coordinated response. Federal and provincial governments must work together to ensure readiness,' he added. The NDMA officials briefed the prime minister, stating that the 2025 monsoon season has been 60 to 70 percent more severe than the previous year. Three major rain spells have already occurred, they added, resulting in at least 178 fatalities and more than 500 injuries, largely in lower Punjab, Islamabad, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The NDMA expects four more significant weather events by mid-August, with the next system forecast between 21 and 28 July. Authorities are monitoring flood-prone regions closely, with stagnant water reported in several low-lying areas. Sharif approved the creation of a model disaster response unit in Islamabad and ordered the deployment of a technical team to investigate a recent incident involving tourists in the Swat River. He also endorsed the establishment of a Centre of Excellence within the NEOC and encouraged deeper collaboration with Chinese counterparts under the Belt and Road Initiative. 'This is both a test and an opportunity for Pakistan to build resilience,' the prime minister said, calling for greater investment in disaster-proof infrastructure and enhanced preparedness in sectors such as agriculture. Sharif expressed appreciation for the efforts of provincial governments, particularly Punjab's administration under his niece Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, for what he described as effective disaster management that helped mitigate losses. He further informed that this year's monsoon intensity is between 60 to 70 per cent higher than last year, and overall 65 per cent above average across the region. He noted that while the monsoon season typically includes eight to nine weather spells, the current cycle has already experienced two to three additional spells. He added that last year's forecasts had indicated increased impact in northern Punjab, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Islamabad, and upper Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), whereas this year the brunt has shifted toward lower and upper Punjab, AJK, and Islamabad — a trend expected to continue for another three to four weeks. NDMA chairman also warned that four to five more monsoon spells are expected, with the third spell — which began on June 26 — now nearing its conclusion. NDMA reports 54 more deaths in rain-related incidents, warns of urban flooding
Torrential rainfall across Pakistan has resulted in widespread havoc, with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reporting a grim toll of 178 fatalities and 491 injuries since June 26, while warning of urban flooding in various parts of the country. According to the fresh figures released by the NDMA, 54 deaths and 227 injuries have happened in rain-related incidents in the past 24 hours. In addition to the loss of human lives, 678 houses have been damaged and 126 livestock died. A province-wise breakdown of total fatalities since June 26 is as follows: Punjab 103 deaths, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 38, Sindh 20, Balochistan 16 and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) 1 death. The NDMA confirmed that all reported incidents were a direct consequence of the ongoing heavy torrential rainfall. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and coordinate relief efforts in affected areas. Meanwhile, the NDMA has warned of urban flooding and rising water levels in seasonal streams and rivers across multiple regions of Pakistan due to expected heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours. The public has been advised to stay informed through official channels, including the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert App. The NDMA spokesman said the NDMA, along with relevant agencies, is taking proactive measures to manage any potential emergency. The authority has urged the public to exercise extreme caution amid heavy rain forecasts and potential flooding. Citizens are advised to avoid crossing nullahs, bridges, and submerged roads, and residents in low-lying areas should relocate valuables and livestock to safer ground. People in vulnerable zones are encouraged to prepare emergency kits with food, water, and medicines for three to five days. Local administrations have been directed to keep drainage machinery ready, while residents are advised to stay updated through official alerts on TV and mobile platforms. According to the alert, Rawalpindi and Islamabad are expected to experience intermittent torrential rainfall over the next 24 to 48 hours. The NDMA has cautioned that the intense downpour may lead to a surge in Nullah Leh, posing a serious risk of flooding in low-lying areas. The disaster management authority has advised twin cities residents, especially those residing near Nullah Leh, to remain vigilant, take precautionary measures, and evacuate vulnerable locations if sirens are sounded. Citizens have also been urged to cooperate fully with relevant departments during any emergency response. Severe rain, accompanied by windstorms and thunderstorms, is highly likely within the next 12 hours across several districts of Punjab, including Lahore, Chakwal, Attock, Jhelum, Khushab, Sargodha, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Narowal, Okara, Kasur, Sheikhupura, and Hafizabad. The NDMA has instructed all relevant departments to implement advance preparedness measures to effectively manage any potential emergency.
